Another fantastic video John! I agree 30 quid is a bit steep. I hope Severin does more 4k releases in the UK. Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker was a bargain at £19.99!

Price is always a tricky one with 4K releases, given the production costs, especially if they're fairly niche titles like this. 88 Films do cracking jobs in their 4Ks, and the initial.runs with slip covers and posters/booklets etc are great, but they're not Arrow LE boxset great, which are at the same price point. As others have mentioned, Severin with Butcher, Baker Nightmare Maker at £20 is a steal and a great package, so it can be done

It is Steve 👍👍 I know there's a lot of work goes into these sets and 88 are ramping it up with the films and quality but I'm thinking £30 is kind of like steelbook territory 🤔😳 so I don't know if they will shave a few quid off these in the future, it just means if a few come out at the same time you have to leave some classics on the shelves 😬🤣 hope they last into sales 🤞🤞😁😁 cheers Steve 🤩🤩👍👍

Even though it’s clearly on a _looooowwwwww_ budget, I really enjoy this film until we get to the Second Act. The First Act in Transylvania is what Lee was talking about when he said this was the most accurate Dracula film he did, and it’s by far the best part of the film. Lee’s acting chops on full display, Franco is reasonably focused and (it would seem) actually gives a damn about what he’s making for once. Unfortunately after Harker jumps through that window things start to go downhill. It’s OK overall, but it could have been something really special as there’s a potent atmosphere built up that simply drowns in the pacing after a lot of struggle. A shame. However this looks like a quality release! £30 is a touch steep though, I think £20 is much more reasonable, but such is the way of the 4K. Thanks for another great video John, all the best! 👍🏻

Thanks Andy 🤩🤩👍👍 I can see what you mean by the movie is in 2 halves 🤔 and it does seem like Franco is taking this film really seriously 🤩👍 it's a really nice looking picture on this one Andy, but at £20 this would have been a sweeter deal 😁😁👌👌

Yeah only problem with this great release is the price, previously they were only £24.99 at the most...going up £5 in one jump is a but steep Mark 😬😬👍👍

Managed to pick this one up directly from 88 today after watching this review. I’m a sucker for 70s horror and Kinski and Lee, so it’s a no-brainer. Still, it’s a blind buy. Love 88 Films, and I’m kind of okay with the price as I’m used to importing 70s-90s horror 4K’s in from America, plus this company does amazing high quality restoration jobs.

Hope you enjoy it Captain 🤩🤩👍👍 it's got a lot of things going for it but it's completely different to all other Christopher Lee iterations of Dracula 🤔🤩👍 I know what you mean about importing mate 👍 they are really expensive at times so I can balance this one out on that! Hey John. I will have to get that as never seen it strangely. Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy are both stunning showcases for the gone too soon Soledad Miranda. Most definitely she would have become a Euro-Horror Superstar. Would have been great to see her in a Giallo.

I’ve just got this too, not the best version of Dracula but it has a few interesting elements, definitely worth having. Great slipcover though, love the quality of the card and the print. The film itself looks great too, lovely colours and some great shots

It's kind of nearly worth it for the whole package (transfer, extras, packaging) but yeah still not worth it, I think any new 4k shouldn't be over £25! 🤩🤩 yeah it was priced at that from day 1 Charlie, I do prefer to buy these in the shop myself so I know I'm getting a perfect one, but in the future I might start doing that for the £30 films Charlie 🤔😁😁👍👍

You've piqued my interest in this, John, I'll put it on my to-get list. I agree, it seems a bit steep - look at Indicator's 4Ks which are basically the same amount of huge effort for quite niche films (wonderful films in my view, I love the Jean Rollin work), they tend to price them at £25 and they are beautiful packages. I think a lot of companies are trying it on with 4K (witness the studio special editions, hitting £40+ quite often), having noted it's quite a collectible medium prices seem to be creeping up. You wouldn't mind but a Blu-ray equivalent tends to be half price of the 4K, and the DVD half again!

I think this set will come down in price mate 🤔🤩👍 this one should have been at £22 at most mate as its definitely an aquired taste and I can see it not selling that well ( in my opinion) I agree that the Indicator 4ks are such a good deal on them!! Ultra hard case 👏👏🤩🤩 I agree that there are some crazy prices for some studio 4ks??? I had never even heard of this movie until i saw that 88 were putting it out. Im glad that people have said not to expect a hammer type movie as thats exactly what i thought i would be getting. Lol i will be picking it up at some point but im happy to have it on blu ray.

It's quite an obscure Dracula film Kevin 🤔🤩 I never saw it in TV back in the day, although it was mentioned in my Horror books, so I always wanted to see it 🤔🤔🤩🤩 yeah no Hammer connection bud, I made that error and it really affected my reaction to watching it 😵‍💫😵‍💫😱😁 yeah completely different, I think it's only because Christopher Lee is in it that everyone thinks of the Hammer connection 🤔🤩 I think it'll come down in price Kevin 😁😁👍👍

funny, I watched it at my grandmother's house in the 70's and I thought it was in black and white. She must have had a black and white TV!!! Yes, I was expecting Hammer and that Dracula, so I was a bit disappointed, and I thought the moustache was ridiculous

I have a cheap DVD of the film. Lee resembles Dracula as described in the novel in this film more than any other film adaptation, but the movie itself is very shoddy. Lee did it so he could be in a more accurate adaptation of novel than his previous Hammer films, but I remember not caring much for the film and really being let down by the effects. Maybe I need to give it another shot.

It definitely has its limitations Michael, I think with Jess Franco's involvement it was always going to be a lesser production than other avenues (say UK or US) I'm going into it with a fresh mindset with it and see how it works for me 🤔🤩🤩👍👍

Always worth a watch if it's got Christopher Lee in but I'd struggle at £29.99.. strange they're pushing that price when others are coming out new at £19.99 or £24.99..

Most of the other 4ks (even steelbooks) are going to the £30 mark, I think if you feel it's steep then it is steep!! Hello John, Tobias here, I got mine yesterday for 27 quid, I spent far to much on movies this month bloody hell my mrs would kill me haha, oh I got the killer klowns 4k steelbook today, was about 36 quid but my birthday money came in handy, top video as always mate, I think you may already know, 2 more 88 films slasher classics titles coming in July. Hi John, great review. I've been thinking of getting this myself, but can't decide on the 4K or just the bluray. Is there much difference between in picture quantity This 88 films release tops the Severin release for slightly better extras, notably the commentaries. Would I be right in thinking they've used the same remaster As for the history behind this film, I believe Christopher Lee only agreed to do it because Jess Franco said he would be faithful to Bram Stoker's book, and in that respect this film is nothing like most of the Hammer draculas, and I think some people will find it a bit boring. Hi John Great review again John I agree with you on the price 29.99 is to much. Having said that the transfer looked really good I've watched count Dracula a number of times and really tried to like it, but how many times I've tried I can't get it to it. With me it's Christopher Lee in hammer that you can't beat. I think when he made count Dracula he was getting tired of the way hammer were going with the Dracula films. So when Franco said he would go back to more of the original concept of Dracula he was up for it. But in my opinion it was a miss step. Christopher Lee seems to have hit it off with jess Franco and made quite a few films with Franco. Are you keeping well Cheers 😊😊

There is virtually no difference between the 4k and blu-ray image. They do such a great job restoring it and putting it on the blu-ray that really the 4k doesn't actually have anywhere to go. I have learnt my lesson, I wish I had just picked up the blu-ray and in the future I will. Highly recommend the blu-ray, honestly dont see a reason to get the 4k unless you need to have the slipcover. Usually I am a big proponent of 4k, but seriously when I did my comparison I was really really annoyed that I spent double on the 4k, when the blu-ray looks the same, there is no distinguishable difference honestly. I just think 88films are doing a great job with putting these new 4k restorations on the blu-ray and its not like their 4ks are bad but the picture just can't get any better. Its not like upgrading to 4k straight from an old blu-ray, the new blu-ray option is actually much much better value for money.

Hi Mark, I've checked the blu ray out and it's not far away from the 4k, it looks amazing if I'm honest so the blu ray would be a good choice....I've just watched the movie....I enjoyed it but its very slow paced, so maybe a sale item? 🤔😁👍

Dracula’s death is hilarious. Young Dracula > Grey Dracula > Homer Simpson > Skull without fangs Also, when Harker is outside the castle why didn’t they show Dracula climbing the wall like a monstrous lizard ? I can only think Lee ran back to Hammer to play their latter day Count, after this. Glad he got to speak the words written by Stoker As he set a lot of store by that. Also…the slowest pursuit chase in history? If you leave now you can get to Varna in 5 days and intercept Dracula 🤷‍♂️🤣

@@MondoChelloveckMovies No. thank you for the review. I might pick up the bluray or wait until 4K is cheaper. Very much a Lee Dracula fan so need it to complete that. But, your review made me watch it again, John and unfortunately, it doesn't get any better. The climax is Drac's death (that's what we all want to see ) but, it is so underwhelming and laughable that it leaves a bad impression, because some of it was good. Kinski was totally underused (or under acted) which is a shame, too
