BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

I had the 858 Rachel gave us, surely Mark should have seen that, given the rounds the day before where he scored good on the numbers.

And then I did the 28*4 for 112 with 5*6=30, 7-6=1 and 30-1-1=28 instead of doing 5-1 for a second four like Mark did.

In the first numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions, and I also had these: 75 + 5 = 80 6 + 3 = 9 80 x 9 = 720 10 + 6 = 16 75 x 16 x 3 = 3600 3600 / 5 = 720 7 x 3 = 21 21 - 5 = 16 75 x 16 x 6 = 7200 7200 / 10 = 720 In the second numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, and also factored (13 x 11 x 3 x 2 = 858) for this solution: 75 - 9 = 66 8 / 2 = 4 8 + 4 + 1 = 13 66 x 13 = 858 And the one for one the other way, which Rachel mentioned but didn't show, is: 75 x 2 = 150 8 x 8 = 64 150 - 64 = 86 9 + 1 = 10 86 x 10 = 860 In the third numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions and also had these: 6 + 6 + 4 = 16 16 x 7 = 112 5 x 4 = 20 20 - 6 = 14 7 + 1 = 8 14 x 8 = 112 7 + 1 = 8 8 - 5 = 3 6 x 6 x 3 = 108 108 + 4 = 112 In the final numbers round, I saw Mark's solution and also had these: 50 x 6 = 300 300 + 5 + 2 = 307 307 x 3 = 921 921 - 10 = 911 50 + 3 = 53 6 x 2 = 12 12 + 5 = 17 53 x 17 = 901 901 + 10 = 911 All the rest are just variants on Mark's solution of getting 906 and adding 5.

Rachel wasn't kidding when she said there were lots of ways to 720. I spotted 75x10-5x6 instantly and somewhat superfluously there's also 75x(3+7)-5x6
