With the first launch of the SpaceX Starship just days away, I thought it would be good to catch up with my old friend Tim Dodd, The Everyday Astronaut to catch up on what he's been doing, his plans for the first launch of Starship, and of course we talk about the upcoming Dear Moon mission he's been selected for.

Love comfort youtube. My recent favorite is Wristwatch Revival. Marshall's voice is super easy to listen to, he does a great job of explaining what he's doing, and he does some impressive camera work considering how delicate and miniscule some of the work is. His hands and tools rarely get in the way of seeing what's going on. It's educational if you want to pay close attention but it can also serve as an interesting background video where you get to see a busted up watch come back to life over the course of 30ish minutes.

I literally don't have a single friend in real life who remembers Flight of the Navigator. Yet you both rewatched it in the last several years. Trivial details like that create a connection that makes me feel more like I'm watching old friends or my cousins having a chat, rather than two strangers on a podcast.

59:20 - I miss the "promise of the Space Shuttle". It was supposed to be flying from 2-3 different launch locations nearly *WEEKLY* by 1990. (Heck, SpaceX still hasn't surpassed the "shortest time between reflights of an orbital crewed spacecraft" record set by Atlantis - STS-61-B flew only 50 days after the landing of Atlantis' previous mission, STS-51-J in 1985.) They even were planning that they'd have to replace each orbiter every 10 years, because they'd have flown their maximum 100 missions each in that time. Needless to say, that didn't happen. As a kid, I was obsessed with the SR-71, X-15, and Space Shuttle.

@AnonymousFreakYT

@@alvianchoiriapriliansyah9882 Not the full promise - but for launching of satellites, absolutely. Heck, there were plans for the Space Shuttle to reuse the large external tank, too, which never saw fruition; which would have made it 100% reusable. Reusability was also planned for Falcon stage 2 but likewise cancelled.

You are correct Tim about nuclear reactors: the reason why they do not release any radioactivity into the atmosphere is because the radioactive elements never leave the primary circuit, only the heat is transferred to the secondary circuit. Also in a PWR only the secondary circuit water is allowed to boil, as it is what drives the turbines. The primary circuit in a PWR is kept from boiling via insane pressures. The BWR primary circuit is allowed to boil but in a limited way, a measure mostly designed to lower costs but it brings its obvious own problems. Molten salt reactors can forgo this entirely since their fuel is within a salt mixture that is already liquid, and they have a thousand degrees of liquid range meaning they can actually operate at really high temperatures and atmospheric pressure while staying liquid.

1:18:01 I think it is totally different to be there. And I don't think that a better place would cost more than the travel from the US. But who knows. I was only once at a race. It was in Hungary where I live. We were sitting at a corner where you could see different parts of the track + there was a screen before us so you could also watch the broadcast. The sound was amazing. Especially the other formula series cars (there was a another race on that weekend) what still had that iconic high pitch sound. But they were so loud I had to realize that maybe the new engine sound of F1 was not that bad eventually. At least my ears were spared.

Just wanted to say on Tim talking about Verstappen in F1: He is NOT a jerk or teriible guy. He's very nice BUT he's VERY focussed. And Dutch people are usually very direct in discussions. We usually don't mean to be a jerk or anything, we're just open and straightforward/honest. And yes, we're usually not the kind of people to sugercoat stuff when we don't fell like it. Never forget that most Europeans have to talk a non-native language to generally get their thoughts across. That also changes a person's way to express themselves.

19:25 - Okay, to dive way too deep… CompactFlash aka "CF" is really just an IDE/ATA hard drive protocol flash memory in a tiny card. CFast just swaps out the older IDE/ATA protocol for SATA. If you look at the connector end, it even looks like a tiny SATA connector. There is an even newer version "CFExpress" which is direct NVMe PCI Express interface in the same basic form factor. SD cards have similar - SDExpress is NVMe / PCI Express in an SD card form factor. Unlike CF, though, SDExpress cards have backward compatibility so you can read them in a regular SD card reader. (Albeit at significantly reduced speeds.)

All sorts of animals have it, and us humans too. And look at you Tim, for all of us who itch to do it, youre going to have that instinct empowered to wander around the moon and back. Thanks for feeding our dreams. Some of us will someday wander to Mars and the Jovian moons.

Hydrogen going through a nuclear rocket does not, in itself, get radioactive. Instead, radioactive materials from the reactor gets into the stream and carried into the exhaust. One of the biggest advantages to dropping a rocket off an aircraft is increased ISP from being at 40kft, which, at 1/4 atmo, is basically close enough to being in vacuum as to able to use vacuum optimized nozzles. This makes for much smaller rockets for the same payload. But it doesn't scale well. However, I much prefer the black horse spaceplane launch profile. A spaceplane with 2 Sabre engines flying a black horse profile would have twice the payload of a Skylon using the same fuel mass.

So all you'd need is a 10gb nic, or thunderbolt adapter for your mac, and a 10gb poe switch, and you could Stream up to 8 cameras to OBS. 😅 still might be difficult to work out the kinks though.
