Counterculture then and now
Artist talk and discussion on the work of AMVK with Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Barbara Vanderlinden and Cor Gout
On the occasion of Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven's exhibition ALLES=GOED we will conduct a conversation revolving around the relationship and tension between the institutional art world and the world of counterculture. Starting from the early days of Club Moral, AMVK’s and Danny Devos’ alternative art platform, we will overview the history of underground art in Belgium and The Netherlands in the 1970s-1980s and contrast it to examining the state of counterculture in the Woke and digital information era. This brings up the question of what is the counter element of current counterculture, does it even exists in the form we thought about traditionally, and what is the difference between un-institutional and institutional art. The event will shed light on local art initiatives, artist communities, etc., then and now.
The conversation will be moderated by curator Ory Dessau and will include artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, the Antwerp-based editor, curator, and art historian Barbara Vanderlinden, as well as Cor Gout, the counterculture aficionado based in The Hague, who throughout the decades founded and edited magazines and wrote texts and books on the verge between the art world, the academic field and the music scene.

Artist talk en discussie over het werk van AMVK met Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Barbara Vanderlinden en Cor Gout
Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling ALLES=GOED van Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven voeren we een gesprek over de relatie en spanning tussen de institutionele kunstwereld en de wereld van de tegencultuur. Uitgaande van het begin van Club Moral, het alternatieve kunstplatform van AMVK en Danny Devos, geven we een overzicht van de geschiedenis van de kunst en underground in België en Nederland in de jaren 1970-1980. Daarbij een aanvullend onderzoek naar de stand van zaken van de tegencultuur in het Woke- en digitale informatietijdperk. We bevragen de huidige counterculture, bestaat dit in de vorm die we traditioneel voor ogen hadden en wat is het verschil tussen niet-institutionele en institutionele kunst. Het evenement werpt een licht op lokale kunstinitiatieven, kunstenaarsgemeenschappen, etc., toen en nu.
Het gesprek wordt gemodereerd door curator Ory Dessau en zal bestaan uit kunstenaar Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, de Antwerpse redacteur, curator en kunsthistoricus Barbara Vanderlinden, evenals Cor Gout, de in Den Haag gevestigde liefhebber van de tegencultuur, die door de decennia heen tijdschriften oprichtte en redigeerde en teksten en boeken schreef op het grensgebied tussen de kunstwereld, het academische veld en de muziekscene.
