Counting Carbs or Calories

Two leading weight loss theories are (1) energy balance theory, calories in/calories out, and (2) the carb-insulin theory, which emphasizes the hormonal response and adiposity of foods more than energy balance. Like most things online, ideas are often presented in opposition to each other, when really the overlap where both things are true is most helpful. So yes, energy balance probably explains most weight gain and loss, and yes, the hormonal response to foods probably influences your propensity toward or away from energy balance.
The internet lacks nuance and “Yes, and….” discussions.

People lose weight eating potatoes and homemade bread. It’s more about the sugar, oil and salt that comes with the carbs.

Keto Started it to help with ADHD symptoms, sensory overload and migraines ( lots of medical evidence to support this), not to lose weight. I easily lost 7kg in 3 months without counting anything.

Cals. But also yes protein and also time-restricted eating occasionally, which helps me reset and stop overeating out of habit. Both reduce cals.

Carb restriction has worked for me to some extent. It certainly returned my blood glucose and A1C to within normal ranges. The weight loss was good at first, but the body is so efficient at holding onto fat stores, that carb restriction alone has not resulted in a steady loss for me. I'm leaning into energy balance by increasing my activity level, which in combination with the carb restriction, will get me all the way to my ultimate goal in for weight loss. I've already reached my primary goal of lowering my insulin response. Hyperinsulinemia puts some people at risk of dementia, plus carb restriction and removing sugar and processed oils reduces inflammation and relieves many symptoms of stress - mental health, pain, gut issues, skin issues.

I don't believe in generalizing it to excess carbs. To me, the big problem with "Carbs" is that unhealthy carbs like sugars are addicting and can lead to binge fests. I've been up and down that road. I was 376 and in a little under two years I got to 164 before rebounding to about 180. I'm currently trying to remove that excess weight from the last few months and the oooonly reason I gained any of it back was due to sugars. if it was just random carbs like bread and I was still eating a good amount of calories every day? I'd probably be 150. Cico may not work for everyone, but I really do think that's mostly because you have to strike a balance between diet and exercise. If you focus solely on one, you're bound to get screwed over at some point. Dieting only leads you down the path of EXTREMELY restrictive eating. You get stuck because you can't possibly eat 1200 calories a day consistently and expect good health and a good mood. Meanwhile if you just exercise and ignore what you eat, you'll lose progress at a slow but steady rate.

Carb is way too general. It’s the artificially simplified sugars and flours that spike our insulin severely. The real way to lose weight is to fast regularly. Not skipping breakfast and calling it fasting either, I mean weekly 24 hour fasts and exercise instead of eating lunch 4-5 days per week, at least 3 day fasts every 2 months. Check with your doctor first and all that.

To manage energy, one has to find balance. Each one has a different metabolism and one formula will not fit all. The middle path is what I agree on, you need to have 15 mins of yogabody is ideal.

it’s not either of those. Carbs are not bad, processed foods are what drives excess fat storage. eat mostly fruits, veg, whole grains, legumes (all of which are mostly carb), and you won’t be fat. this is not rocket science.

I agree with both, there are carbs that don't spike up insulin levels and trigger fat storage mechanisms and there are days when calories in are gonna be more than calories out. What the right answer is moderation. Its fine to eat pizza if you eat a few slices rather than the whole pie and it's fine to eat a few Watermelon slices as it contains water and fibre to make you feel fuller. In both cases pizza being high in calories and Watermelon being full of sugar is offset by moderation.

Different things works for different people. I don't believe in an universal truth when it comes to weight loss. Fasting with 8-16 or OMAD and an increase in general activity works for me. Find your own groove.

The physics of calories in / calories out is undeniable. That is not a matter of opinion. If you have a calorie deficit, you will lose fat, there is no way around this. That said, a good diet is about creating a way to achieve this calorie deficit, or to abuse some mechanic of the body to prevent the absorption of calories. But in the end, the fact that a calorie deficit will lose you weight is just physics.
