This is part 2 in a video series to examine methodology for evaluating Southern Pine Forests. In this video, a possible tree counting methodology is examined that favorably compares visual tree counts with counts from grayscale intensity profiles of drone images.

Hey Tom. Cool stuff. I learned sth. new today, thnx :) I have a forest in Oslo, Norway and am trying to count the trees in my forest using ML. Have you tried any pre trained models with a good accuracy? Would ImageJ work well with Nordic tree species? Would love to hear your suggestions!

Could this process be used to to count all the trees over a larger area? As a forester that does a lot of inventory work and also timber sale cruises find this interesting. I would like to know any more information that you would share on this. Thanks for sharing this video.

The plan is to count all of the trees over the 70 plus acres. Using a two dimensional grayscale image that has been sufficiently blurred (based on the resolution I used), the free image software (ImageJ) provides a good fit when adjusting parameters and finding the two dimensional maximas. I have found greater than 90% agreement between the software derived count and my visual count using several test images. I hope to return now and complete another drone survey of the land with 80% overlap of images. The reason I postponed the final flight was await appropriate weather conditions and to wait until all hardwood trees near the creek bed have lost all of their leaves. Knowing exactly where the hardwood trees are allows me to black that part of the composite image out so that the maxima identified are peak luminance variations based solely on pine tree images. Thanks so much for your question. Tom

Hi Tom, do you know if its posible to export a counting result to qgis?
