As a follow up to the Mega Rayquaza Elite Raid Day mess, I wanted to talk about the long standing issue with Pokémon GO that Niantic has not addressed for the past several years. When it comes down to it, Niantic refuses to help players who play in rural areas, and they design their game with specific people in mind. Let's talk about this!

Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.
Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

As I've said previously, this has never been about exploration. It has only ever been about gathering location data. Niantic does not care about rural players, and they never will because that data is virtually worthless to them when it comes to selling that information to other companies.

Sadly I have to agree... which is funny because of all their fluff advertisements going on with "Look at all these fields, these forests, this back alleyways..." As someone who lives next to a state forest... there are no stops here. Fields are empty (unless you count the endless cows or crops growing in them), as are many vistas. And the less I talk about alleyways in the various towns, the better. But, of course, those are the only things that make their 'active and outgoing' promises feel more genuine... as false as they all are...

I can only speak from a COMPETITIVE (GBL) point of view. As I have hit Legend 16x and am pushing 17x currently. The remote raid limit is bad in that it encourages those in competitive to go out there and obtain *ONE* XL mon and never to be bothered raiding that mon again. There is no point. The cost of *ONE* ML mon if raiding in person and assuming you catch 100% of the Legendaries needed is $50 per. (Which is honestly kind of nuts - aside) Cost of an actual XL for Open Master League (Legendary) is probably closer to 75-100$ as not everyone always can make it to in person. My point being that their actions discourge repeat business. I currently have 10 Legendaries maxed for OML, with another 10-12 which can be maxed if I so desire it. I finished Ho-Oh last year......... Where's the incentive to go out there and grind out Ho-Oh? There's honestly none. Rare XLs? Pass - not consistent enough in terms of rewards. Best to go HAM on GBL weekend saving your Green Passes for the guarranteed rewards from GBL. You can get like 20-30 XLs per weekend then. The only reason for me to do it is to use up my daily yellow pass and call it a day. Thus Niantic has created a system amongst the

I mean they want to be paid to drive tourism in certain countries with a go fest or city safari or even make people go to areas to shop but I don't think Niantic understands that not everyone in the community is that privileged to just plan a trip on the fly and I think that's why they push for features that feel less accessible and more "go to these specific places" have increased

Ironic how 'The sense of Exploration' from a San Francisco based group of developers essentially means creating the conditions for rural/borderline rural players to have to get in cars in order to best enjoy the game. They should rebrand the game Pokemon DRIVE XD. To the TESLA, Pikachu! The Mega Rayquaza Elite Raid day was indeed a very disappointing day (personally). There was only really one park nearby where Mega Rayquaza spawned in gyms (and thankfully it was 2 gyms right next to each other), but even then, there weren't enough high level players to bring it down (6 players either mid-level or low level was understandably not enough). It does feel based on what most people have been posting like this was pretty much a 'Quick! find where in a densely populated urban area there will be an Elite raid, drive to it and wash/rinse/repeat. Which is great if you live in an area like that, but if you don't, you need to have a really well organised PoGO community. (and Niantic can then say it's not them, it's the poor community infrastructure)

Rural players aren’t Niantic’s focus. This whole Pokémon Go game is really some experiment or data collection for Niantic’s main focus, AR and utilizing that to help companies and brands market. Denser population makes more sense for them and their clients; there are a lot more people to advertise to. Rural players and their shopping/mobile behaviors aren’t within their core interest.

Thats a big assumption. I promise you the only thing they care about is $$$$$. They view it as the way were loyal to the player base is by making $$$$ so we can keep the game alive. Its really that simple they look at different courses of action (COAs) and go which one makes the most $$$$$ and go with that. Part of that plan is to pay influencers (YTers) to create FOMO therefore getting more people to spend. Never ever ever ever trust any YTer ever. Isn't this game supposed to be kid-friendly? Imagine being an actual KID and trying to participate in elite raids with your friends, and nobody is old enough to drive. Or maybe you live in a major city but have to go to faraway, possibly dangerous neighborhoods. I love how there is a warning on the loading screen when the weather is hazardous, but there is only "I am safe" as an option. That's probably so Niantic can't be held liable if a player gets struck by lightning or abducted while playing. Maybe we should petition the app stores to change the rating to 16+ due to the necessity of needing a car to participate in so many events.

I’m lucky to be in a greater metro area, and my local community is pretty good and organized, but even our organized, metro area team struggled with this event. You HAD to drive around a lot to hit most of the raids. Yes, we had successful raids and enough people, but a lot couldn’t hit all the raids because of walking AND driving requirements. We didn’t have the time to do any “exploration” to make it to the next raid, even though I’d never been to that area before. Outside of events like this, I barely can get anything at home and have to drive to do anything meaningful in the game, and I won’t have raid help. My brother works at home and luckily has a stop a 15-minute walk away, but he gets barely anything in the game except on event days or if we drive out somewhere. I am even taking his account and plus+ to my office today, so he can get items/eggs at the stop on my office. So many players would happily given Niantic more money and time if they acted like they cared about the *entire* player base.

The rural area issue is real. Ok, they nerfed the remote raids pass, but they should have at least considered the option of giving a free one per month. Plus, they have the coverage map of poke stops and gyms, they should provide some sort of compensation for players in those areas. In big cities you don't even have to do 10 m to spin 3 pokestops, while in some areas you do need to use a car or non legit methods. Even for people who live in big cities, if the local community is not big and organised you end up playing alone and missing a lot of features. Even with this Rayquaza event, I couldn't take part in any raids because... lunch time? happy hour time? I cannot center my entire life according to Pokémon Go events, and many other people are in my same condition. I still remember the Enamorus event during a working day in working hours. We are not all born the same, and even Niantic doen't fail to remember us that.

I think they need to switch the “one POI per S17 cell” rule, but only for rural locations. There can be more per S17 cell if there is fewer than X amount of POI per every S10-14 cell. I live in a very rural area. I drove 45 minutes to a town with more gyms and stop in the hopes I’d find an elite raid. When I showed up it was only me and 2 other people which was a huge problem. Second problem none of the 6 gyms in town had a spawn on them this needs to be fixed.

My sister got me into Pokémon GO over the last month and it has been fun to grind and keep seeing improvement, especially in guides on how to get excellent throws. However, the only community that was on Campfire around me is dead, and I don't know anyone except for me and my sister that actually play here. We live in a little town about an hour from a city and 30 minutes from a smaller one. I wish I had the upbringing that let me enjoy peak PoGo

These videos have been made for 8 years now. They don’t care. It’s a game geared toward youth, but adults play too. The fact that there’s an in app purchase option for 100$, yet they want dictate how you’re allowed to play…should tell you everything. Between paywall’d mons and xl candies……it’s a pay to play app taking advantage of people’s general nature to be competitive.

I don't see that they'll ever be motivated to care about rural or suburban areas. The majority of their player base is in denser more-urban areas. If they're selling mapping data or making partnerships, then the mapping data of cities is going to be far more valuable than rural and suburban areas. That's just a fact of a location based game. Players can complain and argue until the cows come home, but this is something Niantic is unlikely to change even with better leadership. Having said that, there are things they could do to make the play experience better that would affect rural areas. I remember the first time I used Spacial Rend with Palkia. I thought to myself that this is how the game should always work. There is one thing that players should always be able to do no matter where they are and that's catch pokemon. You should never run out of pokeballs or pokemon to catch. Even in a dense city like Seoul. there are several areas that are almost devoid of pokemon. They should change to a wider catch circle and at least double the spawns of pokemon. This could only be a positive thing. Rural players will be happier with more to do and new players are less likely to quit. Now the issue with Saturday's raid day was not how it affected rural players. I'll admit that lite raids suck. I don't prefer to do them, especially over things like raid days or raid weekends. However, at this point we know what elite raids are. We all know that we are going to have to prepare to go somewhere that has elite raid gyms. Even in Seoul, I have to travel 30 or 40 minutes to get to a group of Elite raids. THE REAL ISSUE was the bug that kept eggs from spawning 24 hours before hand. When this happened, the communication was terrible. On their twitter page they gaslighted everyone acting like the eggs were always intended to spawn at 6AM. When 6AM rolled around, there were still no eggs. Some the eggs popped up while we were doing the first round of raids at 12PM. They clearly encountered a bug and instead of being upfront with the community, they gaslighted us and then ghosted us. Elite raids are already hard to plan, for all players. Having only a couple hours to a couple minutes to figure out raids, really isn't something most can do.

yeah rural players can loose out. Whilst I live in an English village, ive noticed there is always stops and gyms in even the smallest villages. However there are not the players. Right now I live 20 minutes away from a City with a busy Discord and a few strong leaders who can arrange a walking route for things like Elite Raid Days. So whilst I have no big demands on my time I dont mind joining those groups for big events. However I do get that this isnt the rural experience everyone has. It would be nice to have something like a "local raid pass" for gyms within say 50 Kms of your location" for events like that.

This is exactly why I stopped playing the game, you either live on a Big city or play long enough to turn yourself into a spoofer, and even if you only spoof for the location bonus (no easy catch or radars) you see that the game is just down boring cycle of the repeated raid boss. If you don't like to collect or PVP there not much else to achieve in the game.

Atleast when they first released mega RAY you could remote. I did some elite raids it’s just too much of a hassle to try to do them on and off all day at random times hard to organize even more so with less time to see where they will be. It’s whatever getting numb to expectations from them at this point. If they are not careful even more players are going to get up and go all right just not the way they want.

I live in Los Angeles and I still feel elite raids are jumping through hoops. So frustrating. We already have shadow raids that don’t allow you to invite. They really need to take care of the community and eliminate the doubled price for remote rates. And allow us to invite our friends that don’t live close to us.

Its tough in my area. Sure there are gyms that have them but not like a crazy amount. Also locals dont know how to coordinate and I was in small man lobbies with Poliwrath, Primal Groudon, and something with lock on (maybe a Regi). I understand not every trainer will have the most optimal counters but at the same time it hinders on others. This whole event was just one big headache and should have been a raid day like they announced originally. Remote raids have a slight chance to get meteorite but in person raiding offers a more likely chance if they want to encourage in person play.

I’ve been playing since 2016 and did not do any raids. Niantic doesn’t listen to its players, they just try to make money off us constantly, and game play is frustrating and not worth the effort. It is too hard to get people together and most people in my community don’t raid anymore.

100% Accurate. I’m a rural player and it’s very hard to play PoGo when it comes to Raid Bosses because unless I can remote, I won’t get it. I have missed out on a lot because there is no Pokémon community near me unless I drive 30-45 mins from me. Niantic doesn’t care about the players. They care about money. Period.

Count could you make a vlog about Wayspotting? Teach the rural Trainers how to maximize the valid Waypoints in their area? Maybe connect with The Wayspotters Podcast guys, Jamal and Chris in NYC or have them on your vlog? I significantly improved my preferred area of play by learning how to nominate Waypoints. The Wayfinding Community in my area tries to reach out to rural Trainers and help them but it is better if they learn how to do it themselves. Niantic will not talk about S2 cells, IITC for Pokémon Go Wayspotting or how to trigger more gyms but maybe you can?

I think for us in the rural area if pokestops gave iteams out based on the number of stops in the large cell this would help so if you only have one it give out more items and if you have loads they give out what they all ways did you would only be missing out on the xp as you not spinning as many. This would help out loads my son is only after starting out and he gets beaten up buy raid and team rocket so much that he has no revives and loads of Pokemon KO. So he uses worse Pokemon they get KO and so on. Some thinking like 24 later they should revive.

Being from California and rural area, our main street has over 10 elite gyms. Not one of these were for Mega Rayquaza. They place Mega Rayquaza to the far corner of the map. 10 min drive in all directions. Did they want players to get into accidents? Talk about cutting out kids who wanted to play. No car? No Mega Rayquaza? 5 billion dallors revenue company so far. $500,000,000 yearly revenue. Niantic could not care less about their players.
