This episode features Tapeley Park, the Queen Anne home of 53-year-old Hector and his bull terrier, Wayne.
Originally destined to inherit the world famous opera house, Glydnebourne, in Sussex, Hector passed up that responsibility, opting instead to take on the family’s rural retreat in North Devon.
Taking over the family estate at just 23, Hector turned it into a commune, moving in friends and even strangers as partying took priority over conserving the family’s rich history.
Now, 30 years later, Hector has moved the partygoers out and devotes his life to running a self-sufficient community.
But with his focus on working the land, the house, now buried under three decades of clutter and grime, is shut off from the outside world, a shadow of its former glorious self.

It just goes to show that no matter how wealthy you are, cleanliness and hygiene take a back seat; Although I haven't been diagnosed with OCD I can't stand living in clutter and chaos, and like my home to be spotless with everything in it's place.

Agree about the cleanliness. Perhaps the empty rooms should have throw cloths over the furniture & not be used for storage of junk. Could then be cleaned one a month.

I asked myself the same. When u deep clean my house it takes me a whole week to go through everything properly and wash and iron the curtains and all sorts. I do it twice a year but dreading it bc of how big of a work it is. I live in a maisonette so can't believe how they manage huge rooms in such short time. One oom of these manor houses is a size of my downstairs.

I know! The most people I’ve flatshared with was six other people, so seven of us in total, in a three bedroom apartment. While yes, having a lot of people in a small space creates mess, you all kind of just work together and mutually keep the space clean, especially the kitchen. I don’t understand how this place got this messy, these people clearly all have a very low standard for living conditions.

What a big house, and land. Hector was very nice person. At the beginning, cleaning and throw a away rubbish was struggle to Hector. In the end result was amazing. I am happy, Rob uses less bleach, favouring eco-products, and stopped bleaching his vegetables. Carly enjoys the occasional walk in the woods. These was mentioned in the end, by video. I'm really glad he stopped using bleach. I ended up with a bleach obsession while I was on chemotherapy, terrified I was going to get a terrible cold or bacterial infection. I'd bleach everything especially the bottle I used for my meal replacement shakes and ended up with an extremely sensitive esophagus that was damaged. It wasn't healthy. Luckily my mother told me about this thing called Milton bleach that is used for cleaning babies bottles etc. Never got sick and my esophagus never hurt again.

How sad to see that such a beautiful possession has been returned to someone who can't handle it. Who is not able to maintain the house. For example, he lets all the valuable books decay. Imagine how sad and disappointed the ancestors would be if they could see the state of the house. It would be better if he sold the property to people who give the house back its original splendour and appreciate it. Because I don't think the rooms will stay clean permanently.

Funnily enough she wanted to use masks - said she would be happy to. If only she knew the reason the cabal have been getting people into masks is to kill them slowly - as they only breath in spittle, not oxygen and they end up with throat or lung cancer and if they wear them consistently day in and day out, they lose 17% of their natural immunity every 6 months and by 1.5 years in they are at the dangerous 50% loss of immunity level and die the next time they get a cold because they can't fight it off!

Been watching so many of these episodes, so many of the OCD cleaners do things that i would consider to be dirty or unsanitary and wouldn’t ever do. Like i would never put bedding straight onto my bed that hadn’t been washed before like she did and they always rub their face or hair when they have their gloves on, when i have gloves on I wouldn’t touch a thing apart from what i am cleaning. I find it interesting that I don’t have OCD but i do have a little thing against germs 😂

Great video. Just seeing people who have standards and outlooks from completely different ends of the spectrum is always entertaining to watch. Found myself laughing out aloud when Hector offered to cook the cleaning fanatics something from his home produce. The OCD team had already witnessed the contents of his fridge and Hector's willingness to eat the contents regardless of it's condition. It would certainly deter me from eating anything despite the good will gesture. Carlie's approach would have been mind I'm afraid - politely decline. I think Rob acted in haste but out of politeness. Carlie's reassurances to Rob was funny: "it'll probably be quite tasty".

Hecror's real struggle with throwing away food and objects, is because he's an environmentalist, and he's trying to live up to his standards and preaching. He's also too humble and good he thought he'd be a nasty aristocrat if he keep the house fine, so he masked it with clutter and dirt and rural parties. There's an identitiy struggle there between what his family was and what he aims to be. I'd suggest feeding the semi rotten food to the cattle you have, this way u r not throwing it. Old objects are old and they were manufactured already, just throw them. They might be not so good to the environment but at least not your direct environment! And u can buy more eco friendly objects for the future rather than clinging to past items. The house is an environment, and it's just as worthy of keeping as outdoor environment. It's also history, and money, and a good place where u can host and help so many people, so keep all that healthy and shiny and don't be embarassed that u inherited it! Also, you look like a really nice and open person, I invite you to learn about Islam :) such a nice episode to watch

I am not germ obsessed at all and I dont particularly like cleaning, but I do like the look of clean and well maintained household items, furniture, pristine bedding, clean floors, dustfree surfaces and clean windows. Why do they never open the window? I was so impressed at 30 minutes, that he started to really get rid of stuff.

Actually, food in the nature is clean, because there are no poluants, and rain cleans food, all the time.

Why would the cleaners expect silver service/ buffets/ four poster beds when they know they are there to challenge their compulsions? Surely they would understand the place would be on the dirty side?

There's so much potential to that estate being wasted! Yes to the commune, but there should also be weddings, spiritual and yoga retreats, wild foraging classes, festivals, archery, wildlife sanctuaries, and sensory gardens...

Funny thing is he's on an episode on Come Dine With Me, S10 Episode 106. I noticed it immediately after I saw the same orange hat, and the green Aga in the kitchen

If OCD cleaners spend up to 6 hours cleaning their houses, how much time would they spend in this one? :) A really big estate for just one man to live in. It needs a weekly cleaning or someone to look after it on a daily basis... Rotten food can go into a composter hence not entirely thrown (don't know if organic or 'wild' gardening supports this idea, though).

This is such a set up! The socks on the Aga weren’t the same socks that Hector put in his pocket and there is no way on earth that anyone would keep Brocken mugs and rancid food unless they were certified!

Hector can live to do good by people but he owes it to them in showing reliability like cleanliness. Im not a super clean person so I know its due to the state of mind and "always on the go". I think he probably felt overwhelmed by responsibilities.
