This is one of my favorite Merle Haggard songs. The piano isn't really featured but I thought it would be a good idea to cover exactly how the piano is used in the rhythm section on this song.
This is classic country piano - old school. And I absolutely love it.

You're very kind. Thank you. In my early years I was a "tornado" pianist, playing everything I could. Obviously I thought I was getting paid my the note. But a good friend loved me enough to hurt my feelings and he introduced me to what I call "commercial style" piano playing, where less is better.

Love your videos. I’m still learning to play piano. I took lessons for a while when I was seven years old. I had an ear for music and tried playing by ear. My teacher told me if I didn’t stop trying to play by ear I’d never learn to play. I’ve proved to wrong! I’m 82 years old and playing about anything I want. I play in key of C and wish you would do more tutorial in key of C. Thanks for this videos! They are very helpful.

I actually use Garritan Abbey Road for my piano sounds. I load up a patch in Logic Pro and then use that. My keyboard is a super-cheap Casio I bought years ago and I only use it as a controller. Currently my favorite Abbey Road Patch is the Classic Solo Piano 1 patch. (In Logic Pro I also use the EQ to boost the bass a little so it isn't so thin sounding when streaming online.

Thank you for this tutorial. This is a part of my style. A large part being Floyd Cremers contributions. I naturally gravitated to this style..as a rhythm and lead guitar play this style. Most country and gospel music have many of the same licks and these licks transfer very nicely to the piano. I totally agree completely just a little on the left ghosting so the band doesn't step on each other..

Thanks for the upload, it's really hard to find examples of how songs are played by instruments in a band, when you buy piano-vocal-guitar sheet music for instance the right hand piano line will include the melody and many of the actual piano fills will be left out. Makes it hard to learn to play the piano part of the song as it should be properly played.

@MartinGureasko
@MartinGureasko 7 жыл бұрын
The graphic of the keyboard is a free program called vmpk. I simply created a channel in Logic Pro and direct it to that and the keys display whatever I'm playing. There are several other apps out there that do this as well. This is the one that I found years ago and I've never switched.

Am I missing something? At the beginning you say to alternate the left hand with the one and the five but your playing the one and four. Am I wrong?
@MartinGureasko
@MartinGureasko 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, excellent question. In naming intervals, name the interval in relation to its distance from the root. Since we are in the key of F major, C is a 5th away from the root, or F. The note "C" is the 5 of the scale. It doesn't matter if you play the C above the F or the C below the F, it's still a one-five alternating pattern. It is true that if you play the C below, it looks like a fourth, but the C is functioning as the fifth of the F scale. That is why I say "alternate the one and the five." Hope that makes it clearer.

I think I'll make this comment separately. The piano makes sound full. But I know your a pro, but beginners have a tendency to play the melody..sometimes that's ok.. but I like to leave some room for the guitar lead.. I cut my teeth on Chet's albums.. lifting the needle and stealing the next lick.
@MartinGureasko
@MartinGureasko 6 жыл бұрын
Public confession...I played the melody for years when I was first starting out. A friend of mine, who was a much better musician, gently moved me away from that. He reminded me I wasn't getting paid by the note.

Martin Gureasko That's funny. Sometimes a friend can say something that by another would hurt. I like solo playing but there is lot to said for 3 piece bands.. I always like to have a bass in the mix. The sound of a bass is percussive and let's the piano delve into different styles.. Of course Victor Wooten is his own band.
