It is the last of the two Islamic Eids that are celebrated every year around the world. (The other is Eid al-Fitr) This day honors Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act followed by God's command.
However, before Abraham sacrificed his son, God provided a lamb to be sacrificed instead. To commemorate this divine intervention, animals are ritually sacrificed. A third of their meat is consumed by the sacrificing family, while the rest is distributed to the poor and needy.[2] Sweets and gifts are given, and family elders are usually visited and welcomed.
