I grew several dunstan chestnuts from seed in spring of 2017. I planted the chestnut trees in tree tubes to protect them and help them grow taller quicker. Today we are going to walk around and inspect the trees.

If I am not mistaken the American Chestnut trees grew in the tree line...this is probably why the ones you plant closer to the tree line do so well! I am so happy someone is doing something to bring these trees back! THANK YOU!

Just to be clear… Dunstan Chestnuts are NOT American Chestnuts. They’re a hybrid that’s ~75% Chinese, but they’re great for a food plot and human use.

The tubes are great for animal protection but also causes the tree to be a bit weaker as it’s not open to weather ! We used to take the tubes of when the trees reached around 3 4 feet and put a wire mesh round them to protect from rabbits and deer, the mesh was put round in a diameter of 3 feet to a height of 5 6 feet !

I'm honestly shocked how weedy those trees are when grown with the tubes. I've always grown trees with very little protection, just a stake for support if necessary and they are so strong. I'm actually put off ever using tubes now.

How do you prevent tree flop with shelters that tall?
@jamiemckenzie8516
@jamiemckenzie8516 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrmadness2699 very rarely get tree flop as it’s wire mesh and the sapling is allowed to blow in the wind to a certain degree thus giving you a much stronger tree with stronger root system

@Jamie McKenzie agreed. I have some pawpaws with just mesh and a few with a shelter, and while the ones with the shelter are three feet taller, they bend over wayyy too mich and the others seem stronger and better growing

Instead of using a t post, use the thinnest 1/2 inch PVC. Allows the tree some movement and it ends up being stronger and able to hold itself upright

I just use like four feet tall green wire fencing in a circle and use 4 tent spikes to keep it in the ground, that way it grows the same rate as your tube trees but stands on its own because its trunk is thicker

i'm in Australia, so none of that dreadful blight i don't think. Three years ago I got a Bouche de Betizac grafted chestnut tree which is going alright, plus I grew two trees from nuts I purchased at a market. They have become really beautiful young trees - lush, healthy, excellent form. Better than the glamour named variety! Good luck - I hope you can get your native chestnuts to thrive. PS If I were you I'd remove all that grass from around those young trees. Grass is a very fierce competitor for water and nutrients. Look up grass root systems - you'll be shocked..
@mrmadness2699
@mrmadness2699 2 жыл бұрын
KEEP the blight out of your country!!! LOL Grafted trees are a good way to have a consistent nut crop in taste and size but chestnuts suffer from grafting more than other orchard trees. These Dunstan Chestnuts are open pollinated so far as I know so they’re hardier, but inconsistent in form and nut quality. I’ve started some nuts from the breeding program of the American Chestnut Foundation and they should go in this fall at the edge of the woods to benefit wildlife. These trees are good for deer food plots, but are~75% Chinese/American Hybrids so won’t be able to compete as wild trees in our forests 😔

Try planting the seeds in the tree shelters and use weed mats .I have had a Dunstan Chestnut grow out of a 5 ft shelter the first season .It produced nuts just 4 years after it was a nut .Direct seeding gets the tap root deeper faster than transplanting from pots .
@angelkotilainen
@angelkotilainen 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I always grow my trees straight into the ground, they are way bigger than ones I start in pots so I don't bother now with transplanting. I've found wherever the tap root emerges, should be it's permanent home for a good strong tree.

@@keithsams4301 You have to protect the chestnut seed from digging animals. Above, Wm Johnson says he uses tree shelters and weed mats- the mat would help keep animals from digging. And check your trees every few days. Even if a tree gets dug around, you may be able to save it if the hole is filled and watered. Raccoons, opossums and squirrels will do a lot of digging for that nut, several nights in a row.

That's great...I've had about 60 Chestnut seeds in my refrigerator for about 3 months getting ready to plant. I thought they had to be about 50' apart because of their size. Do you plan on moving them or thinning them out? What about mulch around the base so it's not competing with the tall grass. I don't think too much of those grow tubes...The wind without it will strengthen the trunk. I think if I used a tube, I would top the tree to force strength back to the trunk. Thank you for the informative video!

Pretty cool. I'm planning to do some nut trees on our place, but chestnuts aren't one of them because of our climate (North Florida). So these are third leaf trees? Also, I buy from CR and grow them for a year in Root Pouches then plant them in the fall - I find if I spray glyphosate (very carefully) in a 3ft circle once enough weeds grow up to create a thatch, they grow better since there’s no water/nutrient competition.

I checked them yesterday and noticed that some are starting to sprout. I was trying to figure out how to identify the type of tree they're going to be. All I can tell you about them is they were sold as a product of Italy. Would that mean they're European chestnuts?

@Qingeaton 4 жыл бұрын
I have a buddy who planted a bunch of Dunstans and now he finds that the people who buy chestnuts for eating don't want them. The problem stems from them using trees that had bad flavor in their breeding program when they were developing the blight resistance. He is in the process of grafting them over to good tasting varieties. The wildlife will enjoy them, but just a word of caution if the goal is for human consumption.
