I grew 83 dunstan chestnut trees this year. I got the seeds from Chestnut Ridge of Pike county Illinois. Their chestnut orchard is all Dunstan chestnuts. Today I am planting my seedlings in tree tubes, also know as tree shelters. Hopefully in a few years I will have a woods full of chestnut trees. I plan on using them primarily for hunting deer. Chestnuts are like deep candy, the deer absolutely love them. I am planning on having over 100 chestnut trees as well as other nut trees. So it could become a chestnut orchard as well, time will tell.

Very cool. After watching your other video where you checked on the trees that you already had planted I did a little research. It turns out that there are a couple of varieties of chestnuts that will grow in our area (North Florida). I may make a go of this and add it to the list of ideas that you have given me. Thanks!

Whenever you take those trees or any other plant out of those black pots, use your fingers or small hand cultivator to "tease" the roots on the side. It something the landscaper on "This Old House" has recommended before. I think it's meant to promote root growth once they're out of the pots.

I have about 8 chestnut trees, 4 are large. Maybe 50 feet high and provides nuts. I have collected 40 nuts and started in buckets. I dug a hole and inserted the bucket and covered it with a steel grill to keep animals out. I am a 68 year old and combat veteran. My 10 acres here in SE Virginia has a large open space in the back. I plan to plant these seedlings back there in rows. I am at a age now that animals must be protected as I seen enough death in my early years. Going to provide a habitat for them and food. We have a large garden and compost it weekly. WE get possums, skunks, squirrels, deer, snakes, bald eagles, hawks, rabbits. and many more. The rabbits are less now and hawks are fat. I sit in the back and these animals actually come near me and had no problem. I encountered hunters on my land last winter and engaged them. They wanted to physically hurt me but they ended up subdued on the ground and sheriff arrested them. Deer were happy. I was at their court case and they were fined heavily and surrender their firearms. Cant wait until the trees get grown.

The rule is to remove the seed after planting. Rodents will find it and ruin the seeding. Good luck !!!

Will you have to lift the tubes in the fall to remove the dead leaves, or will they drop inside the tubes out of the way for new growth? I just planted 10 Chestnuts on my farm in tubes. Thanks

You can lift your tubes and remove leaves, but I never have. Probably not a bad idea to do it.

I think I did 15 feet in this area. I know that is close. But I want it to be more like a forest than an orchard.

Once you get into chestnuts long term you will discover that Dunstans are like Chevy's and Fords. They are fine and they work, but there are much better varieties out there to be grown, and the Dunstans can be grafted to them. All marketing hype aside, Dunstans are Chinese trees anyway, just not the best Chinese trees.. NOT trying to be a downer, I just know people who spent many years growing them, only to find out that the buyers ( a local co-op in Ill.) pay less for them than grafted varieties. I worked at UMC HARC chestnut evaluation and variety trials on their chestnuts some 20 years ago. They had 30+ different varieties and a Dunstan was included. It did fine, produced a good crop, but they were just not as nice as the other trees such as Eaton, Qing, Kohr, Peach, Pandora, etc. My own orchard has 21 different grafted trees, in multiples adding to about 100 total and we have developed our own variety, Black Satin. Good luck to you with your efforts.

Don't spray weed killer around your trees! Please just use mulch. You are going to eat the fruit right?
