You can get some pipe or boards to run through your panels, as the cows move up move your boards or pipe up. This keeps the cows from backing up.

We did that as well when we had a known recalcitrant. Usually, though, I was given the task to follow them and prevent backing up by putting my knees directly against their back legs and lifting with my thighs. It’s surprisingly effective, although you have to get high enough not to get kicked and come down too close for them to kick. For bigger animals, I grabbed the boards on either side and that kept them from being strong enough to back me up. They are surprisingly weak in backing up. The other drawback? You sometimes get, um, stuff all over yourself. 🥴

Here's something I learned about loading or working cattle; "If they can't see through it, they won't try to go through it." Doesn't always work but does more times than not. Cardboard or cheap tarps to act as blinders work well. The key is to create tunnel vision for them. Tuck that one away for future reference. Good luck and don't get hurt! Murfreesboro,TN

You need to put bicycle training wheel on the lock.side of gate. This will eliminate issue with closing. Use half inch bolts and washers. It worked great over 55 years ago. Should eliminate drop and ease of closure.
@DEJones71
@DEJones71 9 ай бұрын
I am happy that training wheels worked for you, but I would not use them. Just another device to struggle with and maintain. We were always successful in hanging the gate at a distance where it would not hit the ground. This required a heavy anchor post like Evan uses and a diagonal anchor.

JudithB lWe built a permanent chute and small corral next to the hog pen on one side and cattle on the other side to load into the trailers. We attached a head gate on the end to work cattle shots and worming. The rr ties and 2x 10 boards on the sides of the chute, we could work on any hurt areas, the vet thought we did a good job!! LOL!

Evan, for the future, buy yourself a bubble T-type level ($5.00 or less) & glue it on your drill body. It will allow you to drill holes straight into whatever you're drilling. Some KZfaq farmers load their pigs/beef the night before so the meat won't change in taste? That being the cast you do it you wouldn't lose too much time from work?

I also wanted to say on those long heavy gates. You can set a tall pipe and run a wire down to the other end of the gate. Use turn buckles to tighten the wire. This takes the weight off the gate. Look at old westerns and you will see this in use. We have done this on our larger gates. Good job, I enjoy watching your progress.

Just a suggestion but I would raise my gates several inches off the ground. When it freezes the ground will heave up but if you have the gate posts in deep like they should be, the gates will not go up. Also if you get rain then it freezes puddles on the ground, you can not get the gates open.

Our previous farm was 211 acres and was split up with a creek and a couple of roads so we had to have several corrals. The main thing I learned is that having two or 3 side catch pens is a game changer. I used what we learned from the other farm to build our current corral and it works exceptionally well. Good luck with your farm!

First, I would start feeding them in the area to get them use to the area. The stakes are not a bad idea, but a t-post will work much better when twine is tied to the t-post and coral panel. If you’ve got a couple of chains I would lay them on the ground and hook them to the coral panels to prevent the animals from spreading them as they are loading.
