Those tora tora's are the vivid memory i have of this coup attempt here in manila. I was in grade 4 during that time and its early monday morning(December 1, 1989), you can hear gunshots and exploding sounds from distance my father hurriedly turned on the radio and from there, its Ray Langit whos broadcasting the news that there's a military mutiny and the rebel forces already captured airbases controlled by the government. And as the early morning light shines, we can hear already planes approaching our area, three T-28's (Tora-toras) flying in formation circling our area, were in Balintawak, Quezon City, many people go up to the roof of their houses, some folks on towering water tanks to see those planes flying, they're dark colored. Then minutes came by and we heard another planes approaching, its 2 F-5 jets, they are colored white tailing those T-28 but nobody shoots, those F-5 are just tailing those T-28's im sure those pilots are talking on radio trying to convince each other to either join the rebels side or stop this military adventurism. i guess less than one hour passed and those F-5's peeled off leaving the T-28's in control of that particular airspace, by 9am those T-28 left our area, i guess they in to strike government soldiers positions already. Approaching noon time, a much powerful sounding plane can be heard approaching our area and this is different from the first two aircraft i saw that early morning. me and my friends went up the water tank and im sure what we saw are American aircraft already its like the F-16 that i saw. I only learned about those aircraft as i start reading articles about military aviation and our military history as i grow up. just sharing my experience regarding the 1989 coup attempt. Its a exciting experience for me, but same as other folks im also nervous as well.

The scary thing for me are hearing those continuous gunshots and boom sounds, but you would really notice that every time those T-28's or F-5's appears, those gunshots suddenly stops. That December 1989 Coup Attempt happened for a week, so for a week we dont have any classes, the first 3 days i guess are the bloody ones, and those American Planes are flying there round a clock day and night i guess they did this as a persuasion flights. We are just getting information from Radio and sometimes news can be seen also in television most of the tv channels then are controlled by rebel forces.

This coup upstaged my cadet battalion’s Tactical Inspection. My uniform was meticulously prepared, starched like they had never been before, combat boots and brass shined to perfection the night before. I woke-up at 8:30AM in a panic, “OMG, I missed formation! I’m supposed to be in campus right now!” Then I heard the engine drone of the prop planes, “Well that’s weird, why would the Air Force be doing patrols today? They didn’t announce any air shows, no?” Then I got downstairs and saw my folks listening to news radio. “Another coup? Today of all days? Couldn’t they have held-off another week?”

I did not expect this to also happen at my place, I thought this was only in manila when I brought up this topic to my retired grandfather, was surprised when he said "nahitabo sad ni sa lapu lapu ug cebu" (this also happened in lapu lapu in cebu). Talking that the bridge from lapu-lapu was cordoned and is blocked by tanks(probably meant LAV). He said about military with armbands which flags are flipped upside-down to identify if there were coup de tat members. He was designated in manila doing paperwork in the military, as soon as the plane fighting started they went outside to see it. At first I was weirded out why he called the planes "tora tora", it reminded me of a japanese ww2 plane movie. But then it is really an actual term for the planes which model is Trojan something. The thing that gives me chills is that when he was going home (he retired after that) after the peacetalks happened. He was asked which side was he on, he responded "Nagtrabaho rako diri(I just work here)" he presumed the guy asking him was a coup de tat member by looking at the armband and upsidedown flag.
@Gillan1220
@Gillan1220 Жыл бұрын
The term is Tora Tora because that 1970s movie on the attack on Pearl Harbor was hit here. Plus, our media tend to assume every prop plane is WWII plane. Yes, the coup also extended to Cebu. There was a standoff between loyalists and RAM members in the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge since the rebels controlled most of Lapu-Lapu City including the international airport and the air base. The air base at that time housed at least 5 F-5 fighter jets and the nearby airport had one 747 which could have flown rebel troops to the capital.

Consider this was in 1989, occuring just before the 48 anniversary of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. Filipinos at that time, including veterans of WWII that were still alive, were probably asking themselves: " Filipinos shooting other Filipinos shooting each other near Christmas, what kind of foolishness is this? The more since the 21st century is in 11 years."

I remember watching the local news in Cebu of rebel soldiers disembarking from civilian ro-ros coming from Mindanao. Past event already and provided hard lessons for the military, which have been learned. The Marines have developed a motto of "NEVER AGAIN". What is the point in showing that sad and unfortunate episode in our history. There are still quarters who call for coup d'etat and withdrawal of support from the duly elected President and bloggers have been falsely stating that PMA generals are in conflict with the President. These events tend to confuse the Filipino people and tend to breed disunity and partisanship which will result in the weakening of the country to defend herself against non-respecter of international norms and laws and thus easily accomplish their aims/goals of dominating our beloved Philippines and the seas around her. Nonetheless, the AFP and other armed forces in the country has remained steadfast in its avowed devotion to its mandate and avowal of support and defense of the Constitution and the duly constituted authorities and the Filipino people. Be FREE than sorry.

Then when the Americans left their bases, the situation just worsened as China started building military facilities and artificial islands as well as harassing our fishermen. To be frank, China took advantage of the power vacuum created by the U.S. withdrawal in Clark and Subic in the 1990s (because of the Pinatubo eruption and the so-called "historic" senate vote on the rejection of bases extension).

Hahaha

hi guys you should watch sir eking about another view regarding this as part of a ranger and also a government mediator. his mistahs are the coup member and see what really happens during that time behind the scene.. look for pinoy survivor channel. no offense to the owner of this channel. just another first hand info that we dont usually learn from textbooks and media.

Because it was supposed to be a power-sharing between the opposition led by Cory and the military led by Enrile and Honasan (had they not done the coup back in 1986, People Power would never happen and Cory would never be in power), brokered and arranged by the US to replace Marcos. Cory would spread democracy while the military would continue fighting the Communists. Of course, Aquino broke the balance when she freed Joma and that angered the military.
