Very useful review with great insights. I have seen many reviews on the game, but the fact that you guys sit down after the game and specifically talk about the nuances, really opens up the game to others on a new level. I just wanna add to the topic of not looking at your cards that by actually looking at your cards, knowing what you have increases your chances to know what other might or might not have ;)

Kamil' Suleyev Thank you, Kamil, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Generally when we play games in this group we sit around discussing them afterwards so that's kind of why we decided to go with this format. This was actually the first recording we had made so it's great to hear it still holds up :)

Not looking at your cards wouldn't break the game, it would actually be disadvantageous as it would take away valuable information from you, and the odds are more likely that you're wrong than right.

Saw you on watch it played and honestly subscribed before I even watched video. After watching the video I enjoyed it very much. Great job! I like how you almost create a "panel" of reviewers by the end of the play through. Nice to get multiple opinions and strategies all in one video!

Thanks Chris, that's a lot of what we were hoping to show. Give people a good overview of the experience of playing the game and almost "review" it without really reviewing it. Excited to get some more content out for the viewers :)

Without a doubt, the best card combo i've seen is Duke and Captain. Captain can block steal and we used to play a bluff if you open with stealing and then follow with a duke or vice versa

Great concept. I don't get to play enough to do something like this on a regular basis. One minor suggestion would be to use different transitions for going into the replay and then out of the replay to the after talk. The text at the bottom of the replay was helpful but going back and forth was still a tad confusing when it switched.
@boardgamereplay

Originally I had text that said "Main Discussion" for a brief moment at the bottom after coming back from a replay. I may end up bringing that back in the end. Thanks for the suggestion, and of course, for watching!

At the start of the game, one has a 37.14% chance to have a particular card. So if someone doesn't look at their hand, you should call them on anything they do. Similarly, if someone taxes (claims duke) every time they take a first play, you should call them on it until they stop.
@CueBall909
@CueBall909 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but this is only limited to 6 players if you have the "standard" version of the game. The Kickstarter version comes with additional cards (with alternate artwork) that allows play for up to 10 people. I haven't played with that many, but it's doable.

You're absolutely right! I didn't mention this and probably should have. At the time I think I wanted to be sure not to alienate any non-kickstarter backers that picked this one up! :)

I think this would be better if you actually showed yourself playing the game. Surely you could even make 2 videos out of this and double your views or at least get some of them. I only came here to watch gameplay, if you do a review at the end I might be interested but you should really show the gameplay. Especially since you even had the footage and sped it up

Hi Matt. Great show. I think we would get a lot more out of the discussion if you showed all of the gameplay that the discussion was based on. You can even add the content unedited. Just provide details about when the gameplay ends and the discussion begins to make it easy for us to jump forward.

Jeffrey, what if I maybe put up the full play through as a separate video and released it a few days after the discussion clip? I could then add an annotation during the game play montage that said "To watch the full video click here". Hmm, I'll have to put some thought into that. Thanks for the suggestion!
@jeffreyknoll5611
@jeffreyknoll5611 10 жыл бұрын
Board Game Replay I think that adding the full play as a separate video and providing a link would be fine. If I were you, I would not wait a few days, but add the separate video right away. For me personally, I think I would get a lot more out of the discussion if I could see the entire game. Then when people talk about what they were thinking, planning, or feeling, I can comprehend their discussion at a much deeper level.

Hey guys. I have 2 questions: If player A plays an ambassador, and then player B challenges player A. Player A reveals that he does have an ambassador, so now has 1 card not revealed and 1 ambassador card revealed. Does he still draw only 2 cards and then return 2, or does he put the revealed ambassador in the deck and draw one new card and then draw his 2 cards for his action and return 2? (so he drew 3 and put 2 back?) Player C plays a Captain and then gets blocked by player D with an ambassador,and then player C challenges that player D has an ambassador. Player D reveals that he does have an ambassador. Player C looses a card right?
@boardgamereplay
@boardgamereplay 8 жыл бұрын
+Adelle Craig For your first question, Player A, would first have to shuffle the revealed Ambassador card back into the Court deck. Then draw a replacement card. Once they had done that, then the Ambassador action takes place (Draw 2 cards, keep any / none that you choose, then shuffle 2 cards back into the Court deck). Question 2, you are correct. Hope that helps! :)
@os5543
@os5543 9 жыл бұрын
Captain and Contessa is the best combination. Although it's a big disadvantage when you lose a card. Duke is the most useless, because I claim it most of the time and it is rarely contested unless someone has been using an ambassador a lot. I also really like pretending to not have a captain or ambassador, letting people steal off me and then winning at the end when they try and can't so I end up with more coins and can coup them.

Olivia Scott Ahh yes, thanks for sharing! I love that pretend fake-out as well. I've actually had games come down to someone saying "I can't believe you just did that, I KNOW you're lying since you didn't stop me last turn. They challenge me, and lose. Too funny when you pull something like that off! :)
@os5543

Board Game Replay Haha, yeah. But I think my favourite is when they try to assassinate me at the end and I've kept a Contessa. If I have two cards at the end, I'll sometimes let them assassinate me once, just so I can turn over a Contessa the second time and see their face :')

How many challenges can there be in one players turn!? I mean if one takes an action and one other counterattacks the rest players can challenge these two or only one challenge per round!?

I like he concept guys, and you guys did a good job for your first video. If you can get a better microphone to pick up all 6 people, and maybe ask everyone to speak somewhat loudly that would help. As for the game, I picked up Coup and have played it about 14 times now, it is interesting, but after long discussions with some of my friends on it, there just seems to be something missing from the game. All the strategy in the world/excellent bluffing, can too easily get negated by someone who never lies and draws excellent cards to start the game. Just my 2 cents. Hope you guys keep it up, I'd like to see this format for more games!
@boardgamereplay

Zach, appreciate the feedback! This first video was mostly a proof of concept to see how it all worked out. I totally agree about the audio though, the mic we were using wasn't great! I just uploaded the 2nd episode a few days ago with the new mic as well as some better lighting. Take a look and let me know what you think! We hope to keep making little improvements like this as the show goes on, so keep the suggestions coming! :)

I finally got to play this properly. I still don't enjoy the mechanics. If you're about to be assassinated, you claim contessa. If you were bluffing you lose both characters (assassin and bluff). If you have the Duke or you're taking foreign aid, they have the Captain; nobody calls it (since they know you're being honest), the Captain's getting more or equal amounts of money. It's a race to 7 coins; they then just coup you, this has happened a surprising amount.

Sebastien Zander I feel that Cockroach Poker or Sheriff of Nottingham are suitable alternatives ; since Coups about bluffs.. Cockroach Poker even rewards you for seeing that they're telling the truth.
@boardgamereplay
@boardgamereplay 9 жыл бұрын
Sebastien Zander I can appreciate your thoughts on this one. Bluffing is the main thing happening in Coup and that's just not for everyone. I definitely agree that Sheriff of Nottingham and Cockroach Poker have a bit more going on in the game, but for the fast set up and play time, Coup does pack in quite a bit of fun for us.

Why fastforward and skip over all the gameplay?
@boardgamereplay
@boardgamereplay 8 жыл бұрын
Great question! The main reason for this is that we wanted to try and capture the core experience of the game, without having to show much longer game play videos. We hoped our discussion, combined with clips from the highlights would keep the videos informative and more accessible to people wanting to quickly check out a game.

Aw I would have preferred to see the gameplay, at least with this game since it is a bluff game. It let's the viewer play along and guess who is bluffing and who is not.

I don't see how not looking at your cards gives you any advantage. It doesn't extend your options of representing cards. This game is all about (false) information and the only real information you have at the start of the game is your own hand. By not looking at your hand I think you put yourself in a pretty big disadvantage.
@boardgamereplay
@boardgamereplay 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, it's been a long since we had this talk but I do agree with you. I think doing that is more just a "not in the spirit of the game" thing than anything else. I'd rather everyone at the table looked at their cards to be on the same page.
