François Couperin (1668-1733): "Le Tic-Toc-Choc, ou les Maillotins" (from the "Pièces de Clavecin", Third book (1722) 18th Ordre in F-Major)
Dušan Holý - piano
Formula: RR-A-R-B-R-C-R-A-R' ... (I added one more time A part in the end.. I like it, it fits - as a small recapitulation.. sometime I put even BA (without refrain in between) to the end like "backward-recaputilation" ... also sounds good..
*****
In the past, I've got some request to post some video with closer detail on hands... So, I hope Couperin satisfies this requirement properly.. :)
Thanks for watching..

I can't believe he just pushed thru those difficult second part the same speed and ease as the first part. that's amazing. and the final improvisation is very to the point of baroque style. Sokolov's version is amazing for its delicate touches and crispy pearly tones and articulations and control. This one stands alongside his for its speed and bravura on youtube without doubt.

Yes. Thanks. I remember recording the piece on this specific piano in school because this piano has the quickest response. Again - this wasn't "try" to record the most delicate and cultivated-touch-version ever. Comparing this to Sokolov - as the others do, it is completely "out".

I have watched this video dozens of times - it never gets old. Unlike some, I love the tempo at which this is played. I have also seen Sokolov's version (on a tuned piano, in a concert hall) and have also enjoyed it very much. We all know that there are many ways to play a piece, as your sock-in-the-mouth version of Couperin's Tic Toc demonstrates; (Olga Scheps has a slow, lyrical version that I also enjoy as it showcases the charm of the piece.) I don't see any need to choose "one" interpretation as the "correct" way to play Couperin's Tic Toc Choc, although I do understand that we all have our own preferences. But how boring the musical world would be if every piece were interpreted the same way by everyone! Even though this performance was "just" a practice piece at the conservatory, I am glad you filmed and posted this. I have - repeatedly - experienced much enjoyment from listening to it. It expresses wonderful vitality. Bravo!

My fingers "don't match the sound". ... :) People today let scammers steal their money on the phone but video with me, playing piano is not trustful enough... Up-side-down-istan we live in. ..... Thanks for the comment. When I get little older and I feel older than here, I may record Tiiiiiic Tooooooc Chooooooc BPM45 or so. Lets's see... Or.... I should just try on my "new" piano which I finally have at home. So much to play. :)

You can play it quickly, but can you shape it and have line? I can see the Gould influence, but he always had wonderful shape, rounded and cantabile (literally 😂) tone, and wonderful arch. Don't misunderstand me, I like the improvisation, but I feel like you can make this even better! ❤
2 ай бұрын
I think I should write one big: PEOPLE, THIS WAS NOT CD RECORDING, THIS IS NOT THE ULTIMATE AND FINAL RENDITION. THIS WAS JUST ME PRACTICING PIANO AT CONSERVATORY AND FILMING FOR FUN. ... at the beginning. People judge this "record" as if it was studio professional recording. Do we listen to Richter, Ashkenazy or Gould "how they practiced?" (Ok.. with Gould, we may have a few archives...) But my point (and I wrote it already like 5times here)... - How can people even "compare" this home-made record with something from Label CDs or Sokolov playing in Berlin filharmonie, I don't understand. And about "shaping" and "rounded tone"... maybe I don't feel it like that... maybe I do feel this piece very mechanical and "primaritize" this instead of making it "nice lovely tone". Fair enough not to agree with me. I can't please everyone's taste... And who knows... this is already over decade old record. Maybe today, I'd feel it different.

Want to echo previous comments about the clarity of this interpretation (and the lack of necessity of the Gould-humming). Doesn't take away from the accomplishment though, you plays this as clearly as if you had two keyboards, and retains the musical line nicely throughout the complexity. Very good!

I have a doubt, the version for clavichord can be played on a piano or that version was adapted to piano ?, because I understand that the harpsichord version uses two manuals.
6 жыл бұрын
a is correct. We play the piece from the same music scores on the piano as on the harpsichord. No adaptation/trancription. As you can see, it is little bit tricky because some notes are "doubled" --> both hands play on same note. Actually most of the time, both hands are very close. But it is playable.

What's the trick to playing the notes shared by both hands like, for example, the first note?
7 жыл бұрын
hehe.. difficult to give an easy answer. just try to think every hand different, like if you were playing on two registers. Right hand plays faster notes so it goes closer to the keyboard (making smaller but quicker movements) and left hand goes on top of it playing in more "jumpy" style... Of course you have to cheat this little bit - if I remember well, the first note is written long like it should stay for the whole bar which is not possible in case you play on one register... In that case, light pedal will do the job. I think the most important is to follow your left hand... Try to think only your left hand (give it all the importance) and make your right sort of "automated" ostinato. (and also - right hand plays more on the edge of keys while left hand goes deeper to the piano...)

Thank you so much for the timely reply! (Given the date of the upload I was a little doubtful you would reply hehe, glad to be wrong about that.) Your advice makes good sense making the piece much more approachable. I'll give it another go!

Well... If some people even "try to compare" my record (learned in few days as a piano-etude-kind-of-exercise-for-my-fingers), recorded on badly serviced school piano.... versus Sokolov's record from Berlin Philharmony hall (or some similar concert-house), when he played the piece like for a half year, on one of the best pianos in the world, recorded by professionals.... These people must be little bit ..... how ... to .... say.... that...... .... stupid? :)

I think it's "pretty cool" to be compared to Sokolov. The fact that some people can't distinguish the difference between Berlin Philharmony concert hall with one of the finest Steinway pianos and some small conservatory room somewhere in Utrecht, that is nothing to worry about. Thank you for your comment!
@larchmontmark1

@ P.S. I don't think you need to talk about the piano or room or anything, or to explain or justify anything at all. The performance speaks fully for itself, and is marvelous. As you say here, it's great just to be talked about together with Sokolov. The fact that people are seeing fit to do so speaks for itself too. This is fabulous playing that disguises how near-impossible it is to play the piece on a single-manual keyboard. (BTW, anyone who doesn't know quite how hard that is, please try it! I do know, because I did.) :-)

No no no!!! There are some other comments here around and they say: "Sokolov is even more impressive". I think they are all right. Sokolov was recorded by professional team in Berlin philharmony concert hall, where he played on of the best Steinway piano in the world and probably was preparing for his tour for like half a year (as he always does... --> more than half year of preparing and than concert tour for couple months). Compared to my video where I just took my camera to school where I just practiced this piece (for couple days) and recorded myself for fun..... Well. Yeah. I agree. That is way LESS impressive. :)

My back is mostly very fine... I have some pressure in my brain time to time (just when I randomly look around), but my hands, back and other body parts are fine... I do not know (thanks the God and thanks to my good teacher) what is pain or some pressure while playing piano. I would say the opposite... not long ago, I've moved from town to town and that included lots of moving, carrying, stairs up&down, heavy furniture etc.. and I seriously f*cked up my back... I was also sick that time with some flu, and that all combined together in the result - such a pain in my back which I've never experienced before in my life.. 2 or 3 days I was crippled and I cried after each little move.. Trust me or not - after these intense 2-3 days of horrible pain, the first I could do and feel completely out-of-pain, was ....----- tradaaaaa - yes, playing piano...
