Lyrics:
I had this perfect dream
-Un sueño me envolvió
This dream was me and you
-Tal vez estás aquí
I want all the world to see
-Un instinto me guiaba
A miracle sensation
My guide and inspiration
Now my dream is slowly coming true
The wind is a gentle breeze
-Él me habló de ti
The bells are ringing out
-El canto vuela
They're calling us together
Guiding us forever
Wish my dream would never go away
Barcelona - It was the first time that we met
Barcelona - How can I forget
The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away
Barcelona - La musica vibró
Barcelona - Y ella nos unió
And if God willing we will meet again, someday
Let the songs begin
-Déjalo nacer
Let the music play
-Ahhhhhhhh...
Make the voices sing
-Nace un gran amor
Start the celebration
-Ven a mi
And cry
-Grita
Come alive
-Vive
And shake the foundations from the skies
Ah, Ah, Shaking all our lives
Barcelona - Such a beautiful horizon
Barcelona - Like a jewel in the sun
Por ti seré gaviota de tu bella mar
Barcelona - Suenan las campanas
Barcelona - Abre tus puertas al mundo
If God is willing
-If God is willing
If God is willing
Friends until the end
Viva - Barcelona

Monserrat Caballe was a Spanish opera singer from Barcelona. As for the song itself, Freddie Mercury was approached by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to write a song for the Barcelona Olympic Games to be held in 1992. Sadly, of course Freddie had died in November 1991. So, never really got to see his masterpiece being used at the event.

For Your Information, I believe that the correct pronounciation of the sadly late, but legendary Diva, is Montserrat Cabballe(CABALL-YAY). Within Spain like other countries, there are a number of different languages and dialects, Andalucian, Castillano(the "official" language), Murciano, Basque, Valenciano, etc. Montserrat Caballe was a native of Barcelona in the region of Catalunya. They are a fiercely proud people and very protective of their language, so I suspect that "Dona" Montserrat may have been singing in "Catalan"..

She's a Spanish Opera singer. This song is about their first meeting. Freddie had heard her sing and was a fan and in an interview mentioned if he could sing with anyone it would be her and she agreed to it. He wrote a whole album for her. If you liked this you might enjoy How Can I Go On and the Golden Boy. Freddie and she became good friends and he said working with her was a dream come true for him.

Freddie was so much more than a rock singer, he could sing all genres effortless and he was able to compose these very different musical masterpieces. Montserrat was the honorary Queen of Catalonia since she was born in Barcelona. She asked Freddie to write her a song about her hometown. This event was held in October 1988 when the Olympic flag arrived from Seoul and later the Olympic Committee voted the song to the official song of the Barcelona Olympic games in 1992. Barcelona! It was the first time that we met Barcelona! How can I forget The moment that you stepped in the room You took my breath away And it really happened this way, they first met in Barcelona.

You are so right, he idolized Montserrat and wanted to meet her badly. He mentioned it in an interview, she heard and then contacted him. He was floored! He was so nervous when he met her. Imagine that! They hit it off immediately and he played the piano while they sang into the wee hours of the morning. He suggested they do a duet but she said, how bout an album? They developed real love for each other. Wonderful. Here is an interview where he talks about her. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJqImseIqc7agas.html

There is a song on this album, Barcelona, that is sung in English and Japanese. Freddie and Montserrat made an entire album together. He wrote all the music assisted by Mike Moran, Another song, Ensueno, is all in Spanish. This was the very first collaboration between a rock singer and an opera star. They adored each other.

Freddie Mercury was a unique vocalist, musician and composer--this was the first time that these genre's of music were combined. Freddie Mercury created and composed and wrote these songs with assistance from Mike Moran (the pianist) and Tim Rice. He was very creative and innovative and not given enough credit for more than just his amazing vocals and rock front man skills.

Just an fyi that before getting involved in this project, (Sir) Tim Rice was part of the writing team on Jesus Christ Superstar. Apparently Freddie and Moran got stuck on some of the lyrics and they asked Rice, a friend of Moran’s, to help. Not sure whether Rice wrote any of the Barcelona song, tho. But he definitely was involved in writing the lyrics of Golden Boy and Fallen Priest. Regardless, Barcelona is a masterpiece, if you ask me.

I'm not an opera fan either but I love the work that they did together. Were it not for Freddie, I never would have heard her sing so I am grateful to him for the introduction to her. I have never heard anyone sing with the control that she has in the upper register so I am very impressed with her. She is fantastic! Would I go to an opera? Not likely. However, I do love; the album the she and Freddie did together with assistance from Mike Moran and Tim Rice. It is unique and well done. Worth a listen to a few more tunes. The Golden Boy and How Can I go On would be my recommendations. Pavarotti was reportedly against her singing with Freddie. He thought it would be a bad thing for the opera community. He changed his tune when he saw the finished product and how well it was received, so much so that In 1992, Pavarotti began doing humanitarian benefit concerts which he called Pavarotti and Friends which featured himself and various stars from multiple genres, including pop, jazz, rock, etc. Brian May was among those with whom he performed. I doubt he would have combined the genres were it not for Freddie and Montsy showing him it could be done well. Thanks for the reaction!

I will never forget those Olympic days in Barcelona (Spain). She speaks Spanish in the song (at the end also Fredy speaks also Spanish). Montserrat Caballé one of the most opera singers ever in the whole word. Both admirate each other. I suscribe you from Barcelona Spain

Beautiful song and performance with all the spectacle of Opera. Freddie has such a great voice, not one trained for opera but it still stands up to Montserrat and together they create the most beautiful sound and emotion. Montserrat was the #1 operatic soprano at the time they recorded this and she remained in that position until her death. She said she had so much fun doing this album and working with Freddie. She learned a lot from him and he a lot from her.

When Two Musical Giants from totally different worlds come together, with true regard and affection for each other, then combine it with natural symbiosis, the results can be exquisitely memorable.. I understand that Freddie Mercury had a deep(but perhaps largely hidden?) interest in Opera and in the early 1980's went to Covent Garden Opera House in London to hear Luciano Pavarotti. The supporting soprano was Montserrat Caballe and from her first notes, Freddie was overwhelmed. Subsequently they met and became firm friends. Apparently the triumphant anthem "Barcelona" was first performed in late 1987 and in 1988 it was selected to be a major part of the city of Barcelona's successful bid to host the Summer Olympics in 1992. It was originally intended that the two musical superstars shouuld perform the duet together at the opening ceremony, but sadly Freddie's "A.I.D.S." illness decided otherwise. Montserrat Caballe, sadly now also the " late", never performed the duet again, preferring to keep the original as a lasting tribute to her co-performer and dear friend. Many still claim that the 1992 Opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in BARDCELONA was the best ever..!!!

Montserrat Caballe (Montserrat Caballé Folch; Barcelona, 1933 - 2018) Catalan singer. Trained in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) she stood out for her lyrical soprano voice, with a beautiful pianissimo in the high register. Specialist in the bel canto repertoire, he was one of the first voices in the world for his vocal quality, inspiration and perfect mastery of technique.

A music instructor who reacted to this video, said that the background vocals being “sung” by the little background choir… Were actually ALL FREDDIE (ie. The choir was lip syncing; they were probably included for visual effect.) This wouldn’t be surprising, given that Fred did a LOT of multiple tracks of himself singing different parts, on Queen songs. (And sadly, the “live” performances with Fred & Montserrat were lip synced, due to Fred’s health… (Something that - when he was still healthy - Fred would’ve NEVER done!)
@lcbcreative
@lcbcreative Жыл бұрын
Another reason for the lip sync, according to Peter Freestone Freddie's assistant, was that Montserrat's schedule was so busy she never had time to rehearse and Freddie never went live without a lot of rehearsal. I'm not a fan of opera, but I love these two together. The way they talked about each other was charming.

Sometimes analysis, where you are deciding where to put things in which "box" or which dropdown menu, can get in the way of being able to enjoy a well written (written by Freddie) and well performed musical piece. I love the reaction of you young guys 😂 This song gives me goosebumps since more than 30 years. Her last name is pronounced "Caba-YEH". Montserrat was Spanish and this show was actually in Barcelona where Montsy was born in 1933. La Nit is the name of the festival. It's a yearly event. Montsy is singing Spanish here but she spoke 6 languages. She was in my opinion the best opera diva (soprano) the world has seen/heard so far. With an absolutely stunning range of voice and breath technique. Also her capability to go from pianissimo to forte fortissimo (or vice versa) in one arc is extraordinary. Sorry to all the fans of Maria Callas, Dame Joan Sutherland, Anna Netrebko etc. Only because of Freddie and "Barcelona" I got to know her. Years later I made it to a concert with her here in Germany. Just her and a piano. Singing in Spanish, Italian, English and Frensh. Speaking with the audience and telling jokes in German. This Señora had a great sense of humor too. Really unforgetable. I love that they had such a great friendship which you can hear in every little piece they performed together. It's actually a whole album (also called Barcelona). You should see interviews with her when she talks about Freddie. Although in the last one she gave. Maybe 7 years ago. And he said about her: "I love music and she IS music." Pure love for each other. 🥹 She said in an interview that she actually was afraid to go on stage with him. She thought she was to old and to "big". He only answered: "Music has no age". And because of this friendship I think this song is not only about the beautiful hometown of Montsy (as she asked him to write about) but the deep love between these two also. Often people say it was written for the olympic games 1992. But it was only chosen of many others for this from the spanish olympic commitee. Basically Freddie wrote it in dedication to her. She never performed the song with someone else. She was questioned multiple times but she refused. It was written for Freddie and her and so she didn't want to sing it with another guy. So "Barcelona" weren't performed as opening song of the Games because Freddie died before but it was used by many broadcasts during these 4 wonderful olympic weeks. I really recommend this vid for more backroundinformation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtGJhJyn38-4nqs.html And this short one about true friendship: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m71_a9F_0LzdnWg.html "Friends until the end.
