Lyrics:
There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
Oh, send them your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
Oh, there's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one, yeah, yeah, yeah
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and mee
We are the world (are the world)
We are the children (are the children)
We are the ones who'll make a brighter day, so let's start giving (so let's start giving)

Oh, let me hear you!
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (said we are the children)
We are the ones who'll make a brighter day so let start giving (so let's start giving)
There's a choice we're making

We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children)

There's a choice we're making
And we're saving our own lives

We are the world, we are the world (are the world)
We are the children, yes sir (are the children)
We are the ones that make a brighter day so let's start giving (so let's start giving)
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me, ooh-hoo!
We are the world (dear God) (are the world)
We are the children (are the children)
We are the ones that make a brighter day so let's start giving (all right, can you hear what I'm saying?)

This was made in the year autotune was invented, these artists were all at the top, the best in their field. One at the back was an actor Dan Ackroyd, he could sing, in the Blues brothers, he was the tall brother. Standing next to Harry Belafonte, who sang the banana boat song a legend from earlier days. The conductor waves the baton, this is Quincy Jones, from motown.

Hi Both, In 1984 the BBC sent a reporter to report on the famine in Ethiopia, with millions at risk of starvation due to the famine and a civil war that prevented food reaching the worst affected. It was shown on the evening news in October '84 (I think) and Bob Geldof (lead singer of the Boomtown Rats) saw the report and was shocked at the lack of action of 'richer' countries and governments in helping the starving. He decided that something must be done and as a singer with contacts in the music business he called his friends and colleagues and organised a charity single of multiple artists to raise money to send aid. Calling the collaboration 'Band Aid' with the song "Do They Know It's Christmas". As Bob and his co-collaborator Midge Ure were based in London and wanted to capitalise on the Christmas music chart he managed to get the artists and song recorded in a couple of weeks in November 1984. Due to Bob living in London at the time, and the speed of writing, organising and recording, Bob mainly managed to get UK artists and recorded the song in London. The song went to No. 1 in the UK. Following the success of Band Aid, and with American artists feeling that they weren't given the opportunity, USA for Africa was recorded a few months later. "We are the World" is a response to the lyrics in Band Aid's song of "feed the World, let them know it's Christmas time.." Bob and Midge continued the fund raising momentum by coming up with the idea of Live Aid - a concert in two locations (London and Philadelphia) with a global tv audience. If you can access a UK VPN the BBC did a really good documentary on Live Aid, which includes the evolution from the conception of Band Aid, the trials and tribulations of getting aid to the starving in Ethiopia through to the force of nature that Bob was in getting Live Aid off the ground and the success it was.

Harry Belafonte was inspired to organize the non-profit USA for Africa after Bob Geldof organized Band Aid and did the single Do They Know It's Christmas as a fund raiser. This was done before Bob Geldof decided to organize Live Aid but the cause was the same for all, famine in Ethiopia. It was truly a horrible situation. Belafonte then collaborated with Quincy Jones (record producer), Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, and Ken Kragen (manager) to organize the fund raiser. We Are The World was written by Lionel Richie (solo artist and also lead singer of The Commodores) and Michael Jackson, recorded in January of 1985, and released as a single to raise money in March 1985. I believe they also did an album or maybe an EP? Your correction was right, Ray Charles was wearing a red shirt & glasses at 13:22 and 15:01, Stevie Wonder (blind, beads in hair) and Bruce Springsteen followed him. I recognize a lot of the people but not all. I put times below that they appear in this video. I'm not sure all the people in the chorus are actually in the video. I know some and don't see them. They performed this again live with additional artists at the conclusion of the U.S. Live Aid performances, also on youtube. Gives me chills. Loved the reaction, thanks! Conductor • Quincy Jones 12:12 ; 14:34 Soloists (in order of appearance) • Lionel Richie 2:40 • Stevie Wonder 2:48 ; 13:29 • Paul Simon 2:56 • Kenny Rogers 3:08 • James Ingram 3:15 ; 14:48 • Tina Turner 3:18 • Billy Joel 3:26 • Michael Jackson 3:33 ; 4:55 • Diana Ross 3:46 • Dionne Warwick 4:02 • Willie Nelson 4:10 • Al Jarreau 4:23 • Bruce Springsteen 4:29 ; 13:32 • Kenny Loggins 4:35 • Steve Perry (Journey) 4:41 • Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) 4:49 • Huey Lewis 5:01 • Cyndi Lauper 5:07 • Kim Carnes 5:15 • Bob Dylan 12:23 • Ray Charles 13:15 ; 13:22 ; 15:01 Chorus (aphabetical) • Dan Aykroyd 14:31 ? • Harry Belafonte 14:30 • Lindsey Buckingham • Mario Cipollina (of Huey Lewis and the News) • Johnny Colla (of Huey Lewis and the News) • Sheila E. • Bob Geldof • Bill Gibson (of Huey Lewis and the News) • Chris Hayes (of Huey Lewis and the News) • Sean Hopper (of Huey Lewis and the News) • Jackie Jackson • La Toya Jackson • Marlon Jackson • Randy Jackson • Tito Jackson • Waylon Jennings • Bette Midler 14:28 • John Oates • Jeffrey Osborne • Anita Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) • June Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) • Ruth Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) • Smokey Robinson 14:22 - Jacksons

While according to the official listing on the album Bob Geldof was involved, he actually wasn't, he walked out when seeing how an elaborate banquet was being brought in, so everybody could eat. He was so disgusted that he refused to participate in the song. Of course, his name was still on the list to add legitimacy to the song.

Nope, you were correct. This recording was done in the wee hours of the night after the American Music awards. Ray Charles was in the front with the coffee. He wasn't feeling up to it. Imagine being in your later 70s at 4:30am after an awards show. Quincy let Ray and James Ingram re record a day or two later and they super imposed the images over the night recording. Good eye. This was the 2nd leg of the fundraiser. 1st was Nov 1984's Do They Know it's Christmas? in the UK and the final blowout was Live Aid in July 1985, UK, US an AU music festivals. 3 ocean liners of money were raised for a famine in Africa/ Ethiopia. Bob Geldof was knighted by the Queen for organizing. This was a Huge deal in music history!

Yes, Ray Charles probably went to the studio the big day and earlier or the day after. Some artists went to record some other day, like Bob Dylan who is seen alone clearly, also Ray Charles was probably helping composing and recording the track before everyone went into the studio, thats why he is seen with different outfits. I think Stevie Wonder is seen in two outfits, different days. But of course King Jackson did it all in one take and had to wait until Huey, Cyndi, and Kim got their stuff together and did their part. What an amazing day for any of them.

Millions of dollars were raised through sales of the song and album. This is about 1 night in 1985. Right after an awards dinner, all of these Legends gathered together to sing Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie's song being directed by Quincy Jones. They received no payment and they checked their egos at the door. This is the one and only time this has ever been done. Michael was one of the youngest in this crowd. It raised 63 million dollars and sent it to Africa for drought relief. This will never happen again.

The woman singing right after Michael Jackson was not his sister. It was Diana Ross. Janet Jackson was not able to be there that day, but some of his brothers and his sister LaToya were there (they were in the front row on the right, standing near Bette Midler on the end).

This was made after Bob Geldof asked Quincy Jones to lead the American effort on African aid. Written by Michael Jackson + Lionel Richie. Underrated. After the call-and-answer from Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, notice the ascending vocal belt from the late James Ingram. Singers like Mariah Carey and Morissette Amon use this technique. RIP to the fallen. The only non-American singing is Dan Akroyd. He is Canadian 🍁, from Toronto, ONT. David Foster, of Victoria, BC, wanted him to sing for the Canadian effort for African relief but American actress Donna Dixon, and wife of DA, and Quincy Jones convinced him otherwise. Some gentle jabbing that two producer/writer QJ did! They still remain friends! LOL David Foster organized a Canadian supergroup for African relief. Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Geddy Lee + Neil Young are some of the singers. 🇨🇦 Suggested next video: Northern Lights sing Tears Are Not Enough. Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edCCmpiTrZe0p5s.html.

You are right - a few met to fix the whole version among Them Ray Charles and Bruce Springsteen . The lot were able to mert because of an Award show near by . They worked the whole night and you Can see it in a video with Jane Fonda. A few months later another session called Live Aid took place in London and Philadelphia and world wide transmission by TV to 1.9 billion to support the same cause. Find Queen at Live Aid 1985 - the best rockkoncert ever- completely bare with no special Aid - just pure Music .

You were correct. The man holding the cup was Ray Charles and that was also him singing the solo at the end wearing a different shirt. I think the last few solos were filmed separately from the rest of the video. If you watch on those last solos the background and the filming style are different than the shots of the whole group together.

Legends. One & All. Did you see Cindi literally jump for joy? @ 5:19 Not since the times of the Jackson Five has there been so many of the Jackson family on one stage. Jackie, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Tito. I HIGHLY recommend Helly Luv's Revolution. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLJ9p7eC2M-7Zn0.html

No. You don't have to find a day when 20 singers will come. You have to find 20 singers, who will come on the day you choose. Very different.

Ray Charles is indeed in it. But the one who you thought was Ray Charles is Stevie Wonder. Ray is the one in sunglasses wearing the red shirt. The song raised $20 million for Africa. Ethiopia was going through genocide at the time.
