@Guy-Zero
@Guy-Zero 7 ай бұрын
Usually locomotives dont yet have automatic couplers in Europe. Multiple unit trains do have scharfenberg couplers but not locomotives. Maybe that'll change with the automatic coupler for cargo trains currently in planning since locomotives obviously need to be able to just haul any stuff there is out there - be it passenger or cargo. The only locomotive I know of that has a scharfenberg coupler is the ICE 1and ICE 2 power car. ICE 1s is only meant to be used when it needs to be towed because of a problem (ICE 1 is/was as long as a passenger train can be anyway so there was no reason to couple 2 together) while the ICE 2s scharfenberg coupler is used normally during normal operation to easily couple and spit since one ICE2 set was only half the size of an ICE 1
@EpicThe112
@EpicThe112 5 ай бұрын
Some locomotives do have it although you need to put a warning triangle on both tabs of the locomotive to warn that it has an automatic coupler equipped. You see this on the freight version of ÖBB Baureihe 1016-1216 ES64U family the DB Baureihe 189 ES64F4 when it has to do from saarbrucken all the way to the Netherlands Iron Ore/Coal Falrrs Falnqqs 130 runs.

@prabhatsourya3883
@prabhatsourya3883 Жыл бұрын
This kind of reminds me of Indian coupling assemblies, where the buffers connect, and the technician enters between the compartments to tighten the screws (for screw type couplers) and connect the air brakes together. The only thought of safety in these operations is that the brakes of the entire train would be engaged, and the lone loco cannot push against that many brakes.
@video_mitch

Yes, it is the same as in India - screw couplings. Rather disturbing that the train moves during the process
@prabhatsourya3883
@prabhatsourya3883 Жыл бұрын
@@video_mitch Yeah, the only small comfort is that Indian trains are moving away from screw couplers towards the AAR-E knuckle type coupler, which self engages on a push. The technician only has to enter the gap between to connect the air brakes and power couplings. There is still the manual work of going in between the couplers, but the small comfort is that there is no danger of hands being crushed when the technician is inserting the loop assembly into the hook and tightening the screw.

@@AlexKall EXPENSIVE!? Europe had DECADES to switch to knuckle couplers. But they still using obsolete hook and loop couplers... They shall do it gradually, per rail line. It is doable, and no, not too expensive. Russian knuckle couplers are affordable, and have a version that share same journal boxes as European version.

There is a reason why the US got rid of this type of coupler. It is insane that it is still in use
@AlexKall
@AlexKall 11 ай бұрын
Nope, it makes perfect sense. It would be expensive to change couplers on pretty much all wagons and trains throughout a large part of Europe. And they do work well.
@alantaylor3910
@alantaylor3910 11 ай бұрын
@@AlexKall All of North America changed them. There is a transitional type that can couple to either type. New cars would be built with it. The lifespan of a car is about 30 years so this is how long it would take to do it at no additional cost.
@digimaks
@digimaks 10 ай бұрын
@@AlexKall Its not expensive. Both in USA and Russia had much larger railroad prk then Europe, back in the days, when they switched to knuckle couplers. Europe touting about " progress", yet still stuck with centuries old tech. Those couplers are ABSOLETE.
@digimaks
@digimaks 10 ай бұрын
@@alantaylor3910 Exactly! Plus back in Soviet Union there was also a transitional type of knuckle coupler too, that had "an ear"- which was designed to accomodate the old hook and loop coupling. Plus in Sweden they bought Russian knucle couplers for their coal trains, since hook and loop simply rips form large cargo load!

It takes even less time in the US - routine coupling is automatic. You don't need anyone to tighten the coupling link, like this guy does between connecting the air hoses and when he ducks out to connect the power control cables.
