My first game at Highfield Road was this game. The day I started supporting The Sky Blues.

One thing that I remember about watching 1970s football (as an obsessive child) was that you could often identify the grounds just from the distinctive design of the goal stanchions and nets. Highfield Road had the very deep net design (Hampden Park style). Loftus Road, Upton Park, The Dell and Kenilworth Road had those crappy narrow ones with shallow nets (maybe because of small stadiums) where there was barely enough room for the ball to go in the top corner without bouncing out! In fact, I remember Mark Hughes scoring for Southampton at The Dell (against Leeds) in the 1990s, but the ball hit the advertising board and bounced out and the referee don't allow the goal as it happened too fast for him to see! Right, having got that frightfully interesting observation off my chest, it is time to put on my anorak, fill my Thermos and get out more; off to the local railway station to collect some more engine numbers.

So, a recap .. Docherty clearly went in over the top and should have been sent off. Bryan King was well inside the area so it should never have been a free kick. Oh, and the usual crap commentary by Hugh Johns. Just about sums it up !
