I do have a coverstitch machine since Oct 2019, but sewed for decades without one. Not having one made me avoid knits because I didn’t like the result using a twin needle on a regular sewing machine. Now I sew almost exclusively knits and I LOVE it. I wish I had bought one years ago!

I’m a beginner sewer but I have a BabyLock serger and I love it. I use it to sew seams together on knit fabrics and I use it to hem if I don’t want the bulk. However I will come back with a twin needle on my sewing machine to finish the hem, which is where the cover stitch can be so much more useful and convenient. Ive sewn a bunch of knit shorts for my son this summer and everything looks great except the twin needle stitch! No matter how I adjust the settings It will only stretch for a little bit and then it’ll pop! I have been debating for awhile to get a cover stitch machine and I think this video really justify that I need one! Thanks🎉

Yes, start with a machine, then a serger, then if needed a cover stich or a combination machine. I have 2 combination machines & love them. One is set up for a 4 thread overlock and the other is set up for the cover stitch. I splurged and got Baby Lock machines with the jet air threading and auto tensions! Love them both. I did sew for about 20 yrs without a serger. Depends on what you need.

Nice! I have heard about jet air threading, but have not experienced it, but it seems like it is helpful! I could do without a coverstitch, and this one was a gift, but I would not want to go back to the times when I did not have it - makes sewing stretch garments a smooth sailing!

Coats and Clark make a slightly stretchy thread called EloFlex. It can be used to sew the hem on knits using a straight stitch. I also use fusible hem tape on the hems of lighter knits to help prevent waviness. Anything to keep from purchasing another machine, lol! Thanks for this very informative video.

I think that home sewers are looking for industrial machine features but are sized and price for the home. The Accomplish by Babylock has taken a nod from the Juki D-8700 and similar, but has taken away the 750 pound of the industrial machine and it weighs about 20 pounds but stitches 1500 stitches per minute. There are blind hemming machines and all kinds of specialized machines available through the industrial market. In the 80s I bought Singers first serger which was a 3 thread. I now use an 8 thread serger which I love which comes with a 3 needle coverstitch. My daughter has a 4 thread serger and wanted to use my serger for the cover stitch. She now wants a cover stitch machine.

Hello there - I don't, but here a couple of quick tips: 1) change the stitch length to a longer stitch, if your coversticth wants to chew up lighter knits. 2) for best results I sometimes have a little fabric "starter", basically just a scrap piece of knit that I place before I start cover stitching my seam (if i do a flat seam, this won't work on a "in-the-round-hem") 3) when I finish my hem in the round - I lift my presser foot and cut off thread at the bolts and gently pull on the fabric until threads come out. I would say those are the key points - I barely ever need to adjust the tension and any other settings, but I do the tips above almost every time I am sewing with it. Hope it helps! Oh, the manual is a HUGE help :)

I have a combo machine and I have a separate serger. I have the combo set up to coverstitch. It won’t create problems when switching over as long as you thread it correctly. I keep my combo setup to coverstitch because it’s easier to switch between the two machines instead of threading it. As far as I know, stand alone coverstitch machines for the home sewist haven't been around that long. I bought my first CS in 2009 after getting a serger/coverstitch combo machine for my birthday in late 2008. It didn't take me long to figure out a combo machine just wasn't going to work for me. Since I had the space in my sewing room, I purchased a used Janome 1000CP, the first version of the CS for Janome. It was a good starter machine for me. I've since replaced it with a Brother CV3550 because this machine has the top coverstitch, step up for me. As far as sergers, I bought my first one in 1987, shortly after they hit the retail market for the home sewist. It was a 3-thread Babylock without differential feed. I've had two upgrades since then and my next will probably be a Babylock.

Hello Alisa. I like your video. I’ve always thought a cover stitch machine was a necessity. I have a Broth 1034D serger and I love it. I am what you call an occasional sewer. I’m thinking that between my electronic sewing machine and my serge, I now have all I need. BTW what material is your cover top made of and which pattern or yours did you use? Love it. ❤️

Hi, can you sew a complete shirt on the coverstich or you have to switch the machine to do some parts?

A cover stich machine basically serves the function to hem sleeves, neck bands, pant legs, basically edges. It gives it a nice finish as shown in this video. But it's not meant to sew the entire garment.

Hello again ,found this video really helpful but do you think it would Handle thicker fabric as in sweatshirt fabric and do you use it for cotton hemming sorry so many questions I would like to ask but .... One more ,can I ask please ,can it do flat lock stitching as I love this look on raglan garments .hope it’s ok to ask these questions .

Jan, the coverstitch can only do the variations of the stitches that I showed. It is only for hemming/neckline stitching. If you want flatlock - you need to get a serger that does that. And yes, coverstitch can handle sweatshirt fabric - that's what I was showing in the video.

Is a cover stitch the same as an over locker machine? I think it might me but maybe they call it an overlocker in the UK and other countries and in the USA call it a cover stitch 🤔 I don’t have a cover stitch but I am looking at buying a serger and have heard of both of them and have seen demos with sergers. I have also heard of machines that do both and this helps educate me.

Overlocker is the same as serger. Coverstitch is a completely different machine as explained in this video.

I never looked into it as I don't have a need for it, but you can look into it by looking up reviews and info on the manufacturer's website. sergerpro.com/brother-2340cv-review/

Thank you so much for this video, Ive been contemplating a coverstitch for a while. Ive been hemming my knits with the serger blind hem but i find the wrong side of the hem looks really sloppy. Not sure if im doing something wrong or if thats just the way it is. What are your thoughts on serger blind hem? Love your videos.

Hey, I love your energy in your videos! Have you used Pfaff 4870 series serger combos? Particularly Pfaff 4874? Is the seger you show in this video your favorite amongst others? I bought one used on eBay and haven't used it (or any serger/coverstitcher for that matter) yet.

My 5-thread serger also does a cover stitch. I love it, but I don't understand the point of a machine that does nothing but a cover stitch.

For over $600 to do an easier hem that looks so similar to a twin needle. Very little return on investment in my view.

On the right side - very similar to twin needle, on the reverse side - completely different. It is totally up to you whether you see it worthy of purchase.
