Children DON'T just need an education they need to interact with one another to build social skills.

Technology can provide education but school isn't about JUST education. It's about making friends, learning real skills which will be helpful in life.

I’m a teacher. I can tell you that Online learning did not work for most students. Sure there was a student or two who did but most did not. Students need interaction. They need to write and draw rather than doing anything in a computer. They need to read a physical book or document rather than online. It works better like that

it is engagement with others directly which is what was lost more than anything when school went on line. i was happy to get my son back in daycare as soon as it opened. thankfully Canadian school were only shutdown for about 4 months last year

Sry to say but here I'm against online teaching bcz em also a university student and ik how my learning outcome effected during online classes. Recent studies also shows that a student can learn more while engaging teacher directly in comparison with online learning.

I graduated as a teacher in 1995, my final dissertation was on Machine learning, where I described a system where Kids were taught in school or at home primarily through the use of some kind of supervised computer driven learning system. This allowed regular testing and if necessary the kids could be put back to the areas they were weak on. This allowed individual learning pace, challenging the able and supporting the weak. It is easy to flag to a teacher where weaknesses are and to generate reports that really reflect the students ability in a subject. In practical subjects simulation allowed practical lessons without the dangers of real life chemicals or tools. My head of department marked me down because he said it was science fiction and schools could never afford the computing power nor would teachers have the ability to use such a system. :-( How prophetic was I.,

I think the idea of online teaching cannot replace the classes in person totally. The students still need interaction and to learn social skills.

According to WSj, the assumption here is that kids will not be over energetic and break down devices. In case they do, the schools need to know where and how to repair the items.

I started my involvement with educational technology in 1973. I was involved in the development of technology for Computer-Aided Learning (CAL) and Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) at Secondary School and University level. I have produced educational video programs for commercial companies and developed and published work on AI and expert systems. I taught at School and University level and I can assure you that there is no substitute for direct classroom/lecture room experience from both the teacher/lecturer and pupil/student point of view. I have seen the same nonsense spouted about EdTech for almost 50 years. It can provide a useful adjunct for teaching and learning but as a central resource for student/pupil education it is doomed to failure but it has a fatal fascination for people who have no expertise or experience in education but see it as a commercial opportunity.

How about we get some passionate teachers that are supported and well compensated. Like why are we encouraging kids to stare at screens and let their brains shrink.

Sounds like more kids will fall behind thanks to this tech, you need to get kids moving around to get both parts of the brain working. You can not stick them in from of a monitor screen, it causes poor eyesight.

As a student I HATE remote learning. It makes me lazy, tired and bored where I used to be excited when the education was in person. My grades dropped, I wasn’t submitting assignments. Although this topic is very subjective, and some children may benefit from online learning, this CANNOT be the future of education.

The more control over what, when, and how you learn the education sector has the worse off students are going to be.

May I just point out to all those commentators who call this a rich persons charter that all that is required is a dumb video terminal at the receivers end. In general machine led learning is best done in a formal "school" like environment with supervision, However if the student needs to be at home it is most likely they already have a dumb terminal in the form of a TV set. No special equipment necessary required. If we were to assume the government would provide the economically disadvantaged some kind of access to the internet, via village halls, Churches or library's etc, then a simple terminal can be assembled for less than £30 example a raspberry pi plugged into a TV. Even a mobile phone will often do the same thing. This doesn't require high level technology at the user end.

For the last couple of years, I was working from home, unfortunately, this makes me feel lonely as I cant directly face to face communication with my coworker. Just cant imagine how kids will learning from the screen, I think they need to build social skills with interaction, so in my opinion, technology can't replace face-to-face education, in the end, we are human we need to get connected with other humans.

Never under estimate in person learning or our future will grow up with no social skills. Some teachers trying to get out doing what they're paid to do!

Tech only is not the solution. Face to face is definitely the best--pretty much any student will say that, from kindergarten to college. I say this as someone who went to undergrad in person and is now doing grad through online. Social interaction is a necessary skill that was developed greatly through school. Although with this new tik tok b.s., I feel bad for the social pressures that kids need to go through. It seems horrible. I say this as a 23-year-old too.

Edtech is so important in this situation. Also we need to consider how teacher deal with this instrument into their education.

It's pity that Economist didn't take the angle that Technology, as before and in the future, might just be a tool whatsoever. Does tech be able to teach a student to think without a human teacher? The human teacher has used tech to do grading, examinations etc but teaching people how to think, how to explain, how to engage, how to stay focus, how to commit, how to read and write, how to be empathy and how to love? Does tech bring out new grounds on these? Does the setup of the online class help? Could tech teach your kids to be creative, or problem solving, or even, be critical? This video didn't address these. Remote learning has been introduced long ago for committed learners. It's the young learners that need help from teaching, not with just a tool. A tool is never a goal in itself.

Anyone whom been to a university can tell you that you can learn anything online if not better then these horrible professors and their bad explanation. A typical college student sit through an hour lecture to explain one topic. Still confuse, he'll Goggle/youtube it and understand it within minutes. If your not going to the top institutions your education is sub par by learning from professors just hired because they have a Phd. I'd rather be taught the subject by a leading expert online than learn it from a person whom just barely understands the basic of it.

Why no one talks about families who can not facilitate the online learning process?!The families who don't have enough space at their house to create comfortable online learning environment for their children or those who need to work hard long hours to meet the expenses of their children and can't support the e-learning process of their kids due to this?! It goes without saying that kids need to be at school. Learning process is not only about acquiring knowledge to be successful professionals in the future but it also helps to develop communication skills, teach them how to interact with each other and understand others. If it goes like these, I am afraid that after many years our kids are going to be isolated, depressed grown -ups. I am ok with partial online learning and about applying technology ethically to help kids to succeed but I am not supporter of fully remote education system. All these matters should be taken into consideration by governments and educational organizations before making such huge shifts.
