We actually bought two ewe lambs to raise, breed, and eventually milk because sheep yogurt that I bought was so delicious. They are katadin crosses which are not technically dairy sheep but we are loving them. Hopefully we get good milk from them this coming spring. Glad to see that sheep milk was delicious to you guys also!

I had the privilege to try freshly milked goat, cow and sheep milk when I was younger. I was actually raised with goat milk, my grandparents had goats and always sent us from the village. And let me tell you, goat milk is not always smelly, it depends on the animal. I really liked my grandma's sheep yogurt, but cow milk always seemed neutral-tasting to me. We rarely ate anything non-home-raised. When I was really young, I loved milk (I repeat, I drunk nearly only goat milk), and when we had to move farther away from my village (another country, Spain) the transition from goat to cow milk was big and I didn't like it much. Here the goat milk is smelly and has a really strong taste, let alone the cheese... I miss my grandma's goat cheese...

This is great stuff, something I have spent a lot of time researching. Sheep milk has the highest butterfat and jersey's have the highest butterfat for cows (highland cows might take the lead though). Not sure where Nubians fall but Nigerian Dwarf goats have really high butterfat too. Both sheep and goats milk, as you said, are naturally homogenized due to the smaller size of the fat molecules. I just wish there was a hair sheep that was diary...they are all meat sheep. My interest in milk is for milk itself and ICE CREAM (and gelato)!! Thanks for this taste test.
@theamericanfarmstead131
@theamericanfarmstead131 5 жыл бұрын
We've heard the same thing about the Nigerian Dwarf goats and just had the pportunity to taste some this last week! It was creamier than the Nubian milk for sure but both amazing (we ended up getting 2 Nubians in milk and loved their milk). As far as a hair dairy sheep, I've heard of a few people who milk their Katahdins and love their milk... the only thing is you're not going to get the same quantity. Also, I'd try it before you go that route because each breed has a different flavor. You can't beat homemade Ice cream!!!! Best. Ever! So glad you liked this video, all we can say is raw milk is the best! Haha God bless Steve and hope you find what you're looking for!
@Steve-ps6qw
@Steve-ps6qw 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! One last thing on raw vs pasteurized. Someone did a video of a jar of pasteurized milk and set a jar of raw milk next to it. Then every day they took a picture of the jars as they at out on their table. Over time you could see the pasteurized milk spoil in the most nasty of ways. It had gross green stuff growing on top and black junk in it. The raw milk didn't take that route, it spoiled into like cottage cheese or yougurt, not sure what it was but it was not gross and disgusting like the pasteurized milk was. They said that the pasteurization kills off the good bacteria which prevents the nasty things from happening.....another point for raw milk!
@theamericanfarmstead131
@theamericanfarmstead131 5 жыл бұрын
@@Steve-ps6qw Yes!! Isn't it just incredible what a huge difference there is! It makes you sad that so many people just simply aren't aware of the incredible, nutrient dense, living foods that are out there! The gal who owned the ranch in the video did a test on how long her raw goats milk lasted in the fridge - it kept for 3 weeks! We've experienced similar results with out goats milk - how cool! Another danger with the pasteurized milk is that it can spoil and be filled with harmful bacteria before we can even notice it - like you said Steve, there isn't the good bacteria to fight these guys off! Raw milk is awesome.

Our pleasure Tom, it was a blast to try the different types of milk, and we are so glad it was helpful for a decision you're making! One thing we would like to recommend that we have figured out is that each breed gives a different flavor as well as each individual animal! So if there is a way you can safely taste the milk of whichever animal you may be getting, then that would be smart :) that way you know that you will like what you are getting! Good luck and God bless!

I've never tried sheep's milk so thank you for doing this review. I have had goat's milk and I love it and from the taste tester's analysis, it seems the two species' milks are almost identical. Since I've had goat's milk, I think I can then say I have a good idea of what sheep's milk taste like. Though I'm not going to lie, I for one LOVE the goaty flavor, the stronger the better! But that's just me!

I was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried goat milk. It's very mild and not really that goaty in flavor. I like goat meat and milk so I would be fine if it was. However, my wife doesn't like goat meat or cheese, but she will drink the milk. It's mild enough even for her. If you haven't tried goat milk, give it a go! Tastes great.

Jessica Linzy Oh yay, how exciting! We are so glad you liked our video, I know it was the coolest experience to be able to taste milk from each of the different animals! And have you ever had sheep before? Or milked any dairy animal before? I know that during our visit to Blue Oaks ranch we were able to see the milking done for all the animals and noticed the sheep's teats were much smaller than the goats and cow.. our hostess even mentioned it is harder to milk the sheep, unless you have a machine, but of course is totally doable! I'm not trying to scare you, just give you a little head's up in case you didn't know! We knew a gal in Idaho who milked her Katahdin doe every morning! We are so excited for you getting your animals, oh there is nothing greater than raising you own food! :D God Bless and good luck on your milking venture!

sheep could conceivably be a candidate agricultural product to support future Lunar & Mars colonies for their dietary needs as well as wool & other products. their smaller size could be a factor in their favor for early transport in space. there are many items on the flowchart of exodus that would have to be achieved before these colonies would be ready for sheep. It is likely that tilapia would be one of the first stock animals with chickens being soon after.

Thanks for the comment! Well we can say with confidence that the flavor of the milk changes per producer and depends on a variety of things like breed, diet, and preparation. We thought sheep milk tasted more like sheep (go figure) but then again that was raw fresh milk. We started out having goats milk in the stores and it tasted really "goaty" and we did not like it.. but when we tried fresh raw milk it pretty much tasted like cow milk (if you try real hard you might get a goat taste). I would recommend trying some sheep milk again from a good source and fresh and cold! we plan on getting some sheep as our next milkers!

Hi I hope someone could help me understand this. I recently discovered sheep milk and it’s so delicious but I don’t understand why half a gallon cost 25 dollars and another farmer near this farmer charges 19 what’s the difference and why is it so expensive? Can someone please explain thank you
@theamericanfarmstead131
@theamericanfarmstead131 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is very expensive!! Our guess for the high prices would be a few reasons... 1)Dairy sheep produce incredibly Less milk than dairy cows- we are talking about 1/2 Gallon maximum per day compared to the 1 - 8 gallons a day you get with a dairy cow..different breeds will give different amounts. 2)Sheep's milk is much less common than cow's milk.. In the United States sheep's milk is hardly heard of compared to the common cow's milk. 3) Sheep's milk is said to be the "best" for you (out of the three) in regards to vitamin and mineral content, and ease of digestibility. Hope this helps! We know we really enjoyed the flavor of the sheep's milk when we tried it at Blue Oaks Ranch but also found it very comparable to the Nubian goat's milk, in both nutritional content and ease of digestability. Since then we have purchased two milking Nubians and love the fresh milk we get every day (roughly a gallon together with milking only once day)! The goat's were also a much more affordable and available option for us here in Southern California! Maybe you can look into trying some fresh goat's milk and see if it's more affordable/accessable in your area! (we would recommend Nubian or Nigerian Dwarf due to the high butterfat content and creaminess) or e look into getting dairy sheep of your own! :D

The American thank you so much for responding I’ll try finding alternative farmers because there different prices with different farmers. I don’t understand why the difference 19 and 25 is really different is it because of the care or idk do you know how I would be able to tell why the difference from the two different farmers ? I guess in New Jersey the prices may be a lot higher haha thank you again !
@theamericanfarmstead131
@theamericanfarmstead131 5 жыл бұрын
So sorry for just responding, our computer was being funky and not letting us see your massage! As far as the price difference goes, we really aren't sure why it would be so different...perhaps the one farmer just knows that people will pay $25/gallon so that's what he asks... it could also be that he puts a lot of his time and effort into the milking that he feels that $25 is what a gallon is worth... or it could simply be that price because he doesn't know of any farmer who is charging differently. You could always mention it to the farmers too and ask why they charges the $25 and the $19, I'm sure they wouldn't mind telling you why! :) Hope this helps!!
