The Cow Pie Classic has grown into the 2nd largest Gravel Grinder in the state of Michigan, located in Ionia which is just east of Grand Rapids, MI.The race took place on June 10, 2023 and the weather was perfect. I raced the Long Haul/100k version of the race.
I got off to a bad start as I wasn't really feeling it in the beginning. Unfortunately I missed the group I should have been in and quickly ended up in a small group of 4. I wanted to bridge to the larger group but my hamstrings felt tight as if they were about to cramp. So I backed off and let my hamstrings come along. Eventually we were caught by a large group and we totaled about 20 riders. I kept wanting to split the group because there were many in the back sucking wheels and not pulling. This group had a times when we pushed hard but it was mostly petty relaxed.
Most of this group stayed together and we brought 15 riders to the finish line stretch. My legs felt pretty good so I just waited for the sprint. As soon as I saw a train developing to sprint I hopped on the back and rode it until the last minute where I was able to pull ahead and win the group sprint.
