Daniel Bevan I never really thought of it that way, but that’s another great way of explaining why I didn’t really enjoy the show all that much. It treats its overarching plot as if we’ve had a lot of buildup to it, yet we don’t really know that much about it. Vicious isn’t even in 90% of the show, and we hardly get to experience Spike’s past at all. It’s hard for me to care about their conflict when I hardly spent any time with one of them, and the other I barely have any emotional understanding of their connection to the other party. It feels like the tension isn’t properly developed. I’m glad most people are able to enjoy this show, but for me, I mostly remember it as being a very meh experience. I’m sure I had more fun when I watched it, but the fact that it’s barely left an impact on me is pretty telling that this wasn’t the show for me.

Not really. Bebop as we see it is thematically sanctuary for outcasts. You have almost every flavor: Disgraced cop, Dead man, Woman without past, Abandoned child and Trans-canine that can't relate to his own species. All except Jet and Faye found the reason to cast themselves back to the larger world and left. Abandoned child decided to actively pursue her parent, Trans-canine found someone he can relate to and Dead man came back to life for one last hurrah. Faye nearly found something to move on, but with Spike gone she's once again lost and Jet accepted his lot as an outcast and just keeps the door open for the others.

In the episode Ballad of fallen angels, as spike falls from the chapel, we see the entire scene and his flashback through his “left eye”. And what more, the eye that is fake is his right eye. His real self cannot move on from his past. He was still stuck in his past. When he walks out at the end, he has his left eye closed and covered in blood and only his right eye is open as he says “Bang” which might probably mean he has moved on from his past.

I really like to think that Jet and Faye are the new crew of the Bebop after this. We start with Jet and Spike as the crew, and end with Jet and Faye. Spike's story revolves around the past and not being able to ever get beyond it, but Faye is the opposite, realising her past is completely gone but discovers she can still have a future. It's beautiful, really.

One of my favourite things about the Spike and Vicious dynamic is that one has a sword, the chosen weapon of the samurai, and one a gun, the chosen weapon of a cowboy in a western, and both genres are parallels of each other and influence this show heavily
@Brian-my7hn
@Brian-my7hn 4 жыл бұрын
Spike meant it when he said Julia is dead there is nothing he can do.. He went to Vicious to kill him, so he could protect Jet and Faye. It's why Faye flipped out after she asked if it was for the girl and Spike didn't say anything back, because it wasn't and she knew he was going to die for her. The present "eye" was Faye, Jet and his family now, the Past is Vicious, not Julia. It's why Spike refused to run when Julia said they could. He couldn't leave Jet and Faye to die at hands the red dragons to get to Spike. It started with him hating animals, kids and women like Faye, but he ended up loving them all (ed and eins farewell episode proves this itself). To see if he was alive was because this new life he found felt like a dream because of ignoring his past and vicious. It's amazing small details that make a great story.

@LA_HA
@LA_HA 2 жыл бұрын
The version that plays when Spike is fighting isn't just in a different key. I would swear that it's a different genre. It's slower pace marks it as actual Blues versus the show ending version which is more (cool) Jazz, to match the opening sequence music. It's kinda like Spike's Gonna Carry That Weight Blues. See You Space Cowboy works, too. haha. This called for a completely different end song because Spike's story was over. Bonus Round: Some species of birds are psychopoms. They act as guides for souls into the underworld/next world. I believe this is why you see birds when some of the important characters die. I learned that reading Stephen King's novel, Dark Half a long butt time ago. haha

I finished Bebop 2 days ago, and the friend that recommended it to me catched this: when Spike is doing Bang in his final scene, he only has one eye open. The one looking into the present, his artificial eye, maybe implying that right before the end, he realized what he made was a mistake and he could have 'carried his weight' and moved forward with the Bebop. Our interpretation.
@suncore598

@@suncore598 The beauty of Bebop is that not everything about the story is given and can be interpreted differently, so your point is as valid as mine. Need to say that I don't say he's not at peace, he wanted to do it, but feels like a 'I wish I could have done the same' kinda for me, even if he's satisfied at that moment. Have a good day mate

Dude, Spike can't see with his artificial eye, that's why he's good at aiming. So, the memories he has with both eyes, were at the time he felt alive. The memories he has with one eye (the present), were he has this pending stuff to do, find Julia/kill Vicious. When he does the final bang, he has the fake eye open and the real one closed with blood, he can't see anything, he's done.

A legendary final episode to a masterpiece anime. Spike taking down most of vicious's men and then killing him as well, his final word ''bang'', and finally his death that followed along with a great song made these final minutes some of the best i have seen in anime. The other thing that broke me was seeing faye crying when Spike left, thinking that she may not see him again. After finally remembering everything about her past, she decided to focuse on the future and delete her bad memories, as Spike told her, and that future was with Spike and Jet. However, unlike her, Spike hadn't settled things with his own past, at least in his own mind. This anime focused so damn well on each character's past and the burden they carry ( which also explains the phrase ''you are gonna carry that weight'' ) that makes it one of the most realistic and well - written anime ever. I loved that you guys enjoyed the show and understood the true meaning and greatness of Cowboy Bebop. It's been a great journey since summer, when you started the series. All this time i was waiting patiently for Tuesdays to come in order to see your reaction to each episode, which were great as always, and i wish you all the best for your future anime reactions. Shinichiro Watanabe is quite a storyteller. they never really have an "Ending" compared to other stories. and even though the ending was never really clear about if Spike lived or not, it was never really about the ending. it was about the journey. people come, people go. bittersweet, it may be, but worthwhile nonetheless. that's my perspective at least. fun fact: Shinichiro Watanabe directed another series with the help of Studio Bones (The people behind FMA & My Hero Academia's adaptations) called "Carole & Tuesday" which is believed to take place in the same universe of Cowboy Bebop. The rooftop explosion, I never found a reason to either. But go back to the scene of Spike and Jet laughing, it is nearly identical to the Bell Peppers and Beef from episode one. I have always felt the FAN above them in the dining room was as much of a character as Ed, Faye and Ein. If not the fan then the dining hall itself, with the awkward, almost disturbing Egg Meal in Eps. 24, and the awkward and forced laugh Spike and Jet share here before Spike goes off.

BTW my opinion may be unpopular but as it was left up to interpretation, Spike did Die. Reasons include Spike's analogy with the Cat as the Cat was fulfilled in it's last life, the old Native American, saying a Star of a Warrior falls, eluding to Spike and not Vicious. I don't feel like it is an "interpretational" ending. It is straightforward, Spike fulfilled his role/arc therefore ending his story. Jet and Faye go on, with the usual differences. Spike has no qualms with either Jet or Faye at this point, therefor his role on the Bebop is equally void.

I'm not sure if anyone else agrees but i would love if when you guys finish a show you go around and talk about your favorite characters, favorite moments and whatnot. Sort of like a series or season wrap up. One thing i enjoy about you guys is that you try and talk about characters motivations, the messages and feelings behind a scene, the art of it. It'd be nice to get an idea of where you guys stand, kind of how Shane started talking about Faye possibly being his favorite character you know? Like seeing if Jet was Calvin's favorite why that is. I'd find it interesting

7:16, this and Faye’s conversation is one where the original voice is 1000% better. The undertone of the laugh is much more haunting. And Faye’s voice cracks up with her holding back the tears

Talking about Steve Blum's voice, it's not just deep sounding. The descriptors I tend to use are smooth and smoky. Most of the time Spike sounds charismatic (apart from when he loses his temper), which is an interesting contrast to his character. He's not sophisticated, but there's this magnetism about him that draws people in, at least to the audience watching.

Ha funny story, Black Dog Serenade and then The Real Folk Blues part 1&2 were the first episodes of this show that I watched on AdultSwim way back when. So yeah I had the ending spoiled, but that's why it stuck with me after all these years and made me want to watch the whole thing from beginning to end. Love the reaction, guys.

Something to point out, the director has stated that Spike's death is unconfirmed. There are two stars next to each other, one for Vicious, and one for Spike. Only one star went out. The implications of Spike being the one that died, and not Vicious is disturbing. I tend to think that Spike lived.

Y'kno I just realized this, Spike is a stray cat, and strays will always come around to a home that'll feed him. So I wonder, is this how Jet and Spike met? A strayed Spike stumbles in famished to Jet and he cooks him beefless beef and green peppers? Unno, just seems like a Spike thing to do and also a Jet thing to do.
