The Glass Toe - Shoe Shine

The Glass Toe - Shoe Shine

3 жыл бұрын

Hello Shiners!
Today we are going to be restoring the leather uppers on this pair of Red Wing Pecos 9801, Which is the cowboy/wester boot variant of Red Wings Pecos line. These boots may appear to be at the end of their rope BUT they are far from the end. There is a ton of life in these boot, they just needed some TLC.
A lot of the color in these boots was scrapped off and there was significant toe damage. In order to mitigate this I hit all the gouges and scrapes with some fine grit sandpaper. This significantly reduced the appearance of the damage and created a nice smooth surface. Next color was needed. Since the base color was completely gone I needed to use some dye in order to create a good color base to build upon. For this I used a dark brown leather dye, not a perfect match but very close. I will be evening out the color with some dark brown leather creams. After taking care of the surface and color damage it was back to a good ol standard shoe shine. These boots turned out almost brand new ! Seeing the side by side of these boots you wouldn't believe they are the same pair !
You will notice two things about this restoration. The first being that you can still see minor gouges and cuts near the toe of the boot. The only way to fix deep gouges and scrapes would be to use a leather filler. It wouldn't be smart to sand those completely out as they are pretty deep and you wouldn't want to take off that much leather. These boots get used so it was decided not to use filler. Second you will notice normal calf leather products was used. That's because unlike many boots these were not oiled leathers. So if you are wondering why no oil specific products were used that's why.
Happy Shining!

Practice Practice Practice and you'll get the hang of it. I always recommend going to a thrift store and picking up a pair similar to what you normally buy and test methods out. I didn't get good until I started doing this. I was always to scared to try things on my shoes for fear of ruining them.

nice relaxing video with chill music, I also enjoy resoling red wing boot videos. I actually used this video for instructions because i just picked up the same 9801s in similar shape. They probably could use a fresh heel cap but are still a nice find. What # color Saphir polish are you using? I am assuming it is #5 Dark Brown but wanted to make sure. I have some brown footfitter cream/polish but didn't want to chance it. I loved the video but I have 1 request for the people that are using it for more informative reasons. Could you please put little captions in between steps that say "wait 24 hrs for dye to dry" or "30 minutes later" etc. Also clearly show the exact product color # side label etc. thank you for the video

Nice job! I have a question reagarding shoe cream. I used to applied it on leather shoes but the rain washed it down and left stains on my pants... What can go wrong? Should I also use wax to make leather more waterproof?
@TheGlassToe
@TheGlassToe 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video Maciej ! Are you brushing or wiping off the excess cream with a brush or clean cloth after its applied ? Usually what causes that is excess pigment on the shoe that bleeds off when wet. A wax layer will definitely help. Even just a single light layer. It will prevent water from causing the pigments in cream to bleed.

What type of leather did the 9801 come in? What would you clean/ condition an okay pair with?
@TheGlassToe
@TheGlassToe 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure on the specific leather but it was a Vegitan leather vs an oiled leather like most Redwings. I would use saddle soap if they need a good clean, otherwise a good leather cleaner conditioner ( Saphir Renovateur or Cadillac), a good leather conditioner and then some wax. I'll be adding the list of products I use to this video tomorrow. Check back if you want to see all the products I use so you can pick and choose.

Yup, very patiently you did it. please suggest whether hair shampoo can be used instead of saddle soap. I saw VeTiVer channel doing so.
@TheGlassToe
@TheGlassToe 3 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking any soap or shampoo would work. Saddle soap ( and other shoe soaps ) were specially designed for leathers. Regular soaps won't necessarily damage the shoes as long as you condition them properly after. The issues you may find after using Regular soaps is over drying, a film being left on the leather surface, possible clogged poors, and over stripping of the surface finish. I'd suggest using a very mild Regular soap ( no scents ) and trying it out carefully and see how it behaves. Above that Id recommend waiting and getting saddle soap, it's the safe choice. Will Regular soaps ruin your shoes ? Dress shoes possibly, work boots probably not, but you should take some caution.

They do look much better, so good job. But why did you not use acetone to remove the factory finish before dyeing? The dye won’t penetrate the leather as well whilst there is still factory finish left, so it might not last as long and just rub off in the future. It also makes the leather more flakey and grainy looking, like the boots were on the toe and vamp areas before cream polish was used. All in all, you did a great job, but just a couple of points of criticism 😊
@TheGlassToe
@TheGlassToe 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't use the acetone because my goal was only to use the dye to give the bare areas a base color. In those areas the surface finish was long worn off. Ive done it like this in the past with no issue after some time. Using acetone would have been 100% correct also in this situation, I just didn't feel it was necessary in this particular situation but thank you for the critique. I appreciate the constructive feedback 🍻
