After Beyoncé made history with her song “Texas Hold ‘Em” hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart, making her the first Black female artist to ever hold the top spot, she set her eyes on reclaiming the country music genre in a perfectly executed history lesson on the Dark and Shady History of Country Music.
I remember hearing rumblings in the streets about Country being the new genre that Beyoncé would explore in Act II of her Three-Album project that gave birth to the cultural phenomenon now Know as Renaissance in Act I. I was windmilling in the streets for the Queen because a lot of my friends were nervous about the idea of her even thinking about doing a “country Album” especially after what she had gone thru almost ten years ago when she dropped Daddy Lessons and performed it on one of the biggest stages in country music. That performance was met with so much backlash and it was eventually scrubbed from the CMA’s website. And let’s not even talk about what happened in 2019 with Lil Nas X dropping Old Town Road.
#beyonce #CowboyCarter #countrymusic #blackcountry #music
It’s Justin Diego back with another bingeworthy video and today let’s talk about the Dark and Shady History of country music and how Beyonce’s decision to take up space in the Country music drama in Act II is so intentional. Oh yeah and her song “16 Carriages” also charted, debuting at No. 9.
Was Country Music Originally Black?
When I first heard about Black Americans inventing country music, I was so confused because if you think about the state country music today that’s really hard to take in. But I took a deep dive and all roads led me to the banjo.
Country Music Is So Black
So we are officially in our Country Era and ACT II is out now. I am so grateful for Beyonce educating us on the Dark and Shady History of Country Music and I am so glad that she featured some really great black country artists like Willie Jones, Shaboozy, and Tanner Adele. Yall there are so many great black country artist out there and one of my favorites right now is Breland so we have to show our support. I learned so much making this video like how Ray Charles made one of the greatest country records of all time and there is still so much to for me to learn. I can’t wait to continue to educate myself as I mentally prepare myself for everything Beyonce has in store.
Thank you so much for watching this bingeworthy video with me. It has truly been my pleasure. If you’re one of my loyal bingewatchers thank you so much for taking this journey with me I really love yall for that and if you found me because of this video you may as well stick around because there is so much more for us to unpack together. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE like this video and leave a comment it really does help a lot especially with niche content like this.

But let's look at the down side to Beyonce style country.? Country music will change from what it is. It will change from what it already is.. And what more can you add ? Exactly what Beyonce did to jolene. Jolene gotta be smoked. A gang term for shooting someone. Simply because someone wants to leave a realastionship. Don't mean they deserve to die.? But Beyonce says she gonna smoke jolene. And in the video Beyonce has a machine gun shooting at helicopters.? Who's in the helicopter police..??? When you take the wholesome alternative of a country song ? And you replace it with a violent spin...! You turned it into the same ol crapp you hear on the other stations.... Black folks need to quit bring gang thug violence into everything.. That mentality isn't country its city life...! Country Black folks and country white folks are alot the same. We appreciate simplicity.

Yea Beyoncé isn’t the first black country singer but she shined light on those that have been struggling to make it in the industry. I don’t really care much for Beyoncé personally but I can’t deny her influence. As soon as she announced her new genre my insta was filled with black country singers I followed instantly. I didn’t even like country music but I felt propelled to support those artist and surprisingly I’m now vibing to them.

@@KraXoom Beyonce isnt the first nor even the second black woman that's been inspired by Dolly . There'll Always Be Music In 1974, Tina Turner covered Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner's song, “There'll Always Be Music,” in her debut solo album titled Tina Turns the Country On!

Whitney Houston covered I will always love you Dolly parton song . And now Beyonce is covering another Dolly parton song ... When you write your history..? Do forget those like Dolly parton. leave heavy metal out of this conversation. black sabbath created it on February 11th, 1970 when their 1st album was released. as a genre we are separate from all that pop/hip-hop/country lip synching American idol, the voice no talent bullshit. it's the best music with the passionate, loyal and engaged fan base on earth.....oh they actually play instruments and perform live on stage. what a concept😂 HEAVY METAL WILL NEVER DIE 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Outstanding video! You brought the shade and the receipts! As the CMT Awards performance proved, Beyonce already got the racists shook, but now that "Cowboy Carter" has dropped, they're LOSING! THEIR! MINDS! Beyonce's both taking the high road and "getting her lick back" at the same time! I just KNOW that as soon as "Texas Hold 'Em" came out, the CMT bigwigs were plotting against Bey to shut her out, but we not only see y'all, we're WATCHING y'all, so watch yourselves! 🤠🎶👢👀

In college, I took a music class and the teacher had Blues and Jazz in a section and Country and Bluegrass in another. I told her how it made absolutely no sense to basically segregate this music because Bluegrass and Blues build into one another making Country itself and that this felt like just a black week of class. She immediately paused and obviously pushed back. However, she did announce to me and the rest of the class later in the semester. After asking her friends and colleagues (roll my eyes) they all told her I was correct and she was wrong for not tying the two genres into one another and going forward she was going to incorporate the genres. Obviously, never took the course again so unsure if she followed through but at least my class was told what was what.

I am an African (Nigerian) immigrant living in the US, and I always appreciate any opportunity to learn about black American history from the true source! I'm a lurker on your channel Justin for the top value entertainment, but this was very enriching and it IS bigger than Beyoncé. I think my pain is that I wish less heard artists would have an opportunity to shine instead of heaping it all on the plate of those who already have too much like Beyoncé in my opinion. I wish she had featured more "unknowns" - we need more black unknowns in all the spaces they've explicitly or implicitly excluded black people.

This was so beautifully researched. I’m not American so this is fascinating but still don’t really like country sound. Listened to more than half the songs on Cowboy Carter now & only like 2/3 songs so far. I don’t get the sound but I respect the commitment from Bey to reclaim this genre for Black Americans…and I love Bey. I like folk music though(closest thing I think my ear can listen to that’s country) eg Tracy Chapman, the guys like Bon Iver et al. Your approach to the CC album review has been refreshing, thanks

Starting your comments with “I’m not a fan of Beyonce’” or anything similar isn’t necessary… Beyoncé’s haters are always much louder than her fans. It’s so strange.

Right..some people missed the message and what Beyonce is doing to people that don't look like us! She is challenging a system to hopefully help the next generations that don't want to be put in a box cause of their race

It’s not strange when you know racism. From what I can see it’s all of the under cover and overt racists. They just have to push the hate in any way possible. Some loud and some subtle. But bigots are always upset about people of color with talent and success.

I actually think it's the opposite. The beyhive is much louder and more aggressive than the people who aren't a fan. You don't have to be a hater to not like a celebrity or their music.

Truly is @wheatbread2002 They stay clapping back when she really loves the finances of her fans and nor their inspiration they give for embracing her music. I'm not a Nikki fan, but she embraces her fans and interact with them via social media and her shows. Bey uses her fans and other artist.
