The 2024 NFL Draft is over and ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper’s draft grades are out! We look at how Kiper graded the Dallas Cowboys draft class and what he thinks of the Cowboys first round pick Tyler Guyton. But it’s not just Guyton Kiper has thoughts on - it’s most of the full class. Cowboys Report host Tom Downey breaks down Kiper’s grades and what he think of these Cowboys rookies AND lays out what he would have done each time the Cowboys made a pick.

Cowboys 2024 NFL Draft Picks:
RD1, #29 - Tyler Guyton (OT, Oklahoma)
RD2, #56 - Marshawn Kneeland (EDGE, Western Michigan)
RD3, #73 - Cooper Beebe (OG, Kansas State)
RD3, #87 - Marist Liufau (LB, Notre Dame)
RD5, #174 - Caelen Carson (CB, Wake Forest)
RD6, #216 - Ryan Flournoy (WR, Southeast Missouri State)
RD7, #233 - Nathan Thomas (OT, Louisiana)
RD7, #244 - Justin Rogers (DT, Auburn)
Mel Kiper’s Draft grade for the Dallas Cowboys: B-
ESPN NFL draft expert Mel Kiper on the Cowboys 2024 draft class: “The Cowboys were able to trade down five spots in Round 1, pick up an extra third-rounder and still get their guy. Tyler Guyton (29) is going to get a chance to be their starter at left tackle, and from what I see on tape, I think he can make the move over from the right side. He has special ability as a pass-protector and can get to the second level in a hurry in the run game. Defensive end Marshawn Kneeland (56) and guard Cooper Beebe (73) have the talent to step in and play significant snaps as rookies. Kneeland is excellent against the run and has developed pass-rush moves. Marist Liufau (87) was a reach on my board, but I know Dallas wants to be better against the run, and he'll help there. Caelen Carson (174) is an underrated cornerback who was a starter for four seasons at Wake Forest. What keeps Dallas from a higher grade? Not taking a running back in place of Liufau, particularly with several really good ones available.”

We may not have the most slam dunk picks with Beebe's short arms Guytons experience, sack numbers,and big school prospects but when you look at the pieces we could have a highly effective unit which has some dominant characteristics.I believe we will do 👍

My original grade from the start of post draft. They did what they had to do to get bigger and with two open open spots on the OL by trading down added Beebe actually was a great move and giving them an A- is for the effort because it a wise pick. The DE is 260+ lbs adding size to handle NFL level power was needed in a bad way and got seemingly good picks in the 7th round could challenge for playing time providing some flexibility. They got some value at each of those picks having the right positional targets in sight.

Help me understand why everyone was so low on Brenden Rice that you don’t take a chance on him with the 216th pick? 12 TDs last year, raised by the best WR and arguably best football player of all time, some people had him ranked in the top 100, and to see him there at 216 and pass? I’m flabbergasted.

B+ ... its not a sexy draft but it seems like they picked up good people who will help on the OL and defending the run... the weakness of this team last year was stopping the run... the upgrade on OL will probably help the run game and the UDFA signed looks to have some pop potential as more athletic runner with Zeke and Rico handing the tough yards.
@jefflawrence5490
@jefflawrence5490 16 күн бұрын
This was nowhere near a B+. Two out of your first three picks won't even be playing the same position they played in college, and the third won't even be starting. Guyton is moving from RT, where he had limited college experience to begin with, to LT. That is a major transition. Beebe has never played a game at center and is expected to compete for that starting spot. Kneeland is already behind Lawrence, Parsons, and Williams on the depth chart so he's a guaranteed rotational player. This draft was a C at best, and that is being generous.
@jamesgibson6504
@jamesgibson6504 16 күн бұрын
@@jefflawrence5490 Tyron Smith was a RT when drafted and moved to LT. Tyler Smith was a LT and moved to LG. Micah Parsons was a LB and basically moved to DE. So by your logic (meaning no logic because its a stupid comment you made) Tryon, Tyler, and Micah were not good picks because they moved positions after being drafted. Cooper played like every position along the OL during his college days and Guyton has said he is more comfortable at LT and was only playing RT because OU QB was a lefty and that put him on the blind side protection.
@jefflawrence5490
@jefflawrence5490 16 күн бұрын
@@jamesgibson6504 what is ‘stupid’ about it, that you disagree? I never said players cannot change positions or have success doing it. I said both Guyton and Beebe will be expected to play positions in the NFL they have zero collegiate experience at. Let me ask, how would you feel if the Cowboys kept the trade to #29 and picked Powers-Johnson to play center instead of Guyton, used their 2nd round on Trey Benson (who would actually start), then still grabbed Beebe in the 3rd? They could bump Tyler Smith to LT, then have Beebe, Powers-Johnson, Martin, and Steele going across.

N! Tom, I’m mad we didn’t sign Derrick Henry, but the backs in this draft weren’t great. If we wait for a team to cut a RB we’ll get value to pair with Zeke. Zeke’s yards per carry dropped when we lost Travis Frederick. He’ll be a beast once this o-line opens some holes.

The Cowboys are getting 4 compensatory picks next year, if they wanted a running back it would be very easy to throw in next years 4th and a 6th or 7th and someone would have given them their 4th round or early 5th round pick. The Cowboys would be fine next year because they still have so many picks. The simple fact is the Cowboys are 100% in rebuild mode and they're not willing to spend any draft capital or even spend money on UDFAs like they usually do. They are mailing it in on every level this year and possibly next year too.

All I got say is between Tyler’s career at TCU and Oklahoma, he allowed just 1 sack his entire career along with a average of only 2 quarterback hurries per season. He played both left and right tackle and even a little left guard. It’s a reason that the commanders tried to trade back into the first round to get Guyton. Dallas always hits on lineman in the first round. Hell they even draft decent ones in the second round and later. Overall I’m content with the draft and is not worried about the running back situation. Cowboys were soft in trenches on both offense and defense and not having linebackers, all those things exposed them all last season and finally caught up to them. I would like for them to grab a corner in free agency however.

I prefer what the Cowboys did. The failure of the Cowboys to double-dip at defensive tackle is disturbing, and their waiting until 244 to take any defensive tackle is disturbing. Flournoy may have speed, but he's still a guy who hasn't faced good opponents and has an injury history. He's just one more of the Cowboys' many wide receivers who might be okay in there somewhere but doesn't even seem certain to make the team. That you would pick up a better wide receiver is good, but using an earlier pick to do so is bad. Your draft would give Prescott plenty of new tools to use to showcase himself to other teams in his free agency year. I have zero interest in helping him look better in his free agency year. I would have gotten tools for the defense and told Prescott to showcase himself with the remains of last year's offense.

I think they drafted several good players, however, the fact that they did not address running back, receiver and defensive tackle in a meaningful way is very disturbing both from a standpoint of how they'll do this year and also from the standpoint of trying to figure out what the goals of the front office are. To add to this is the fact that we let key players go at several positions of need and made no attempt to sign any free agents made the draft process so much more difficult. Given all that, you really have to wonder if building a winning ing team matters to the Joneses. This has me questioning whether i should remain invested in rooting for this team.

It was critical to come out of this draft with a RB who could give you 10-15 carries a game, so yours is better, but I trust 32 GM’s over you and those late round selections almost certainly won’t amount to much. Go back to the 2010’s and you’ll still have a hard time putting together a team made up exclusively of third day guys who would compete for championships. GM’s are just sharper than we are when combined with their vast resources. You win BIG with dominant QBs and Defensive studs.

Best comment by Kiper is on Notredame Linebacker. a good RB. At 87 was more of a need at that pick than a linebacker.. if Kiper is anywhere close to his evaluation of last years draft over this years. We are in serious trouble. No important contribution from last years draft worse draft in the league. With at least 3 picks or even 4, this years draft promises to be much better than last year. From professional football people and more authoritative experts in the draft this guy Kneeland could be our best pick defensively in years if he is a hit it means we have found a gem at 56 for the next 10 years with even more upside than when D.law was drafted. Sam Williams has Talent but his off the field behavior worries me. I would have entertain trade offers for him . A 3rd or a 4th could have being another addition to our picks in this years draft. We will see about Williams he is talented and should be seriously talked to about his risky behavior. Drinking and Driving can be a death, or an injury you may never recover from. Another Williams , Eric almost lost his life because of a drinking accident. Could have had the same Carrer as Larry Allen had with Dallas and in the Hall of fame for sure.

Passing on Wilson for Liufau was F'N STUPID! It's almost as bad as passing on Watt for Charlton 🤦🏼‍♂️

Mel Kiper said Travis Frederick was a bad pick. Even after trading down to get him. He also said Claiborne was that guy. Claiborne was the worst pick Cowboys ever picked....

I don't like that the Cowboys drafted a slower footed CB. In the absence of Diggs, they were very vulnerable on the deep stuff. Management needs to get with the times and invest in speedier players.

Dallas will be 1-16 this year, they’re blowing everything up. This is not the year to be invested in the Cowboys.

C+ I didn't think Guyton was a 1st rounder. If you watched Senior bowl practice he got exposed by the good edge rushers. The one guy who stoned those edge rushers every time was Jackson Powers-Johnson. Who I thought would have been an upgrade over Biadaz. Yes we really needed a running back, but this year after Brooks from Texas was pathetic.

I wouldn’t change nothing that the Boys did in this draft, the trade back was great because you lost the fourth due to a trade with the niners, you got the fourth back because of that and it gave you two picks in the third, you can only play your board our coaches or GM don’t think the same we got just what we needed in all areas except RB but that’s going to be okay just watch and see

Ok heres my thoughts on the draft for what its worth Guyton is not plug and play, at least on the left side, so Smith is going to have to be moved to tackle anyways. 2025 starter maybe. Only thing saving this from being an F is the trade which I gave an A grade to. Grade = D Kneeland Dallas has two players with similar body type and position, Golston and Vili, so this pick was redundant to me. Who is backing up Osa? Trice, Dorlus, and Elliss were available so were Carter and Jackson as DTs (which was a greater need) MUCH BETTER OPTIONS!!! Another D Beebe. This is a plug and play starter, I hope he can play center, or he would be a wasted pick as a guard considering we have Bass, who could also start. Haynes would have been a better pick here. Ill give this pick a B Marist WAAAAAAY to early. Reach, much better options available even later. If they were hard up for a LB in THIS SPOT Gray would have been a better choice. Hell much better LBs available later. Only reason he'll stick at least this year is his draft status. Grade F Carson PnP sneaky need. Has special team reps in college. Start him in the 3rd or 4th CB spot. Liked James better. Grade C Flournoy Seems to me that they took a WR just to take a WR. Whats wrong with Rice? Grade D Thomas, A nasty mauler, for this spot this was a good pick. will probably play inside. My only question is how many IOL does Dallas need? Grade C Rogers will have to be PNP, either him or Davis will have to be the backup/rotational piece for Mazi, Dallas has no choice. Could have gotten a better DT at the Kneeland pick. Grade D No RBs taken. That lowers the total grade at least one grade UDFA Whats wrong with Leonard Taylor III, Keith Randolp, Steele Chambers, Beau Brade, or Cephus? But Dallas has to be cute and sign another TE!?!? And a camp fodder RB Overall D

This is the best fan analysis I have read yet. Guyton wasn't a top 5 OT and is switching from RT to LT, and 90% of our homer fans aren't recognizing just how difficult an adjustment this will be. Kneeland is a 2nd round depth piece and they could've gotten a starting quality WR, RB, or LB instead. Beebe is expected to compete for a position he has never played before, but at least he has serious upside. Liufau was an absolute reach. Tired of hearing people talk about him playing with his "hair on fire." Watch his highlights, he's an arm tackler who plays quick. I'd have loved to have seen this instead... Round 1: Jackson Powers-Booth, immediate starter at center. Round 2: Trey Benson, immediate starter at RB. Round 3: Cooper Beebe, immediate starter at LG and push Tyler Smith out to LT. Smith, Beebe, Powers-Booth, Martin, Steele would be a better O-line combo than Guyton, Smith, ??? at center, Martin, Steele

Zimmer will get a lot out of Kneeland…..and wait for it….they’ll even stop the run! We all know that Quinn ran a defense that basically said “try to stop the run on the way to the QB”. Zimmer will have this D in the top 5 easily.

Guys, this was one of the worst drafts for RB’s in a long time. There weren’t any stud RB’s that weren’t coming off injury so they were wise. Anyone questioning Dallas’ ability to draft O-Linemen is crazy. Go back and read what they all said about Tyler Smith, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick. The ‘experts’ laughed at taking Travis Frederick in round one!
