Handy lil piece of kit. I would have felt better putting a big old sheet over the cable to reduce whip if she slips or breaks. If that cable was to snap, the recoil would take ya head off Dan. Please be careful.

Hi dan when winching heavy loads you need a snatch block on the tree then run the winch cable from the winch around the block and back to an anchor point on the winch this gives you twice the pull power from the winch but puts less strain on the winch hope that helps

Great to hear that TVO engine ticking over ,I guess you had her on petrol but she sounds well pity we can't smell the exhaust. I can remember a family of related farmers working a wood below our farm in the early 50's all arriving from their different farms on their T20's each with proably 3 men riding on the linkage .our yard was the parking area. They had a draught horse too. It stays in my mind because one had a Hesford/ Fergy winch and as more anchorage or pulling power was needed with more T20's got draughted to gether (3 at one stage) just as they would have done a few years B4 when horses were common. A great sight!

She worked a treat might be worth getting a snatch block to increase the amount of pulling force.

ive got a ferguson winch i use it daily to pull trees out of the wood and it pulls like a train. your winch just needs alot of uses because the cluch on the winch needs wearing back in. my ferguson winch was the same when i bought it. it just needs using

Great followup to the repair video! I haven’t tried a winch but every tree i’ve tried to pull out has turned out to be more difficult than I expected.

That's about how it was for my father and I, twenty of years a ago. We were pulling out Hawthorne bushes about that size. Father didn't alter anything on his though. I seem to recall they're rated at the tonne of pulling force but I could be wrong. Lovely video Dan.

enjoyable video, and like you, I agree that a bit of clutch slip is also a bit of protection providing it doesn't damage the clutch. As Paul F said, a snatch block is probably the best solution. Keep'em coming

I have never winched a tree but I have dug their root balls out and can say they are very, very stubborn things indeed. If you even try to pull a sapling by hand it can be a real struggle. So a tree that is even a decade old will have a lot of resistence. The winch got a work out, you got have a go and learn from it and we all got sit here watching and thinking, will the tree pop out, the winch rope snap, the winch fail or tractor get dragged over. Have seen a few of them winches rotting away in nettles sadly but never seen one in action, great upload young man!

We had to get our tractor winched out of a steep area after trying to retrieve a bale the contractor released down the hill .Another contractor turned up with an equally ancient tractor to winch it out. FWD after that and contractor advice on where not to release round bales. That was a very expensive bale, which remained where it rolled and did rot down - eventually.

I like the way the ground anchor works, I’m sure with a bit more use the clutch surfaces will clean up and work better.

You've a quare good stand of thistles and stinging nettles there Dan, we had parts of the farm where our nettles were nearly 6 foot tall or maybe I was just smaller then.

We used to have one of those winches Dan, did a good job, until I over egged it once with a scaffold bar and broke the main drive shaft. 😬 Good idea to drape a sack or coat over the cable on a heavy pull to stop any whip lash, or you can get a proper winch sail from Goodwinch. 🙂

That was a Marvel in its time due to its gears and a Classic! My Dad has one he put it on the Flatbed it looked funny.

It's surprising how much force is needed to put roots out. As you said, usually strop high and use the leverage but elderberry is tricky as the higher you go the ore likely to snap it. I used the 698 last time to pull them out 😂. I thought you might get the strop so tight you wouldn't get it off to be fair 😕.

That first one had a damn good hold o the ground was makin the 35 grunt a bit 👍👍

Looks like the old girl still has plenty life left in her. Also does a lot less damage to the ground using the winch compared to trying to pull them out with a tractor alone

Howdy from west Texas , our problem are Mesquite ,i found tying choker about 6 to 8 foot up works with less pull , granted we live on about 18 inches of rain a year .much drier than your vid Thanks Bill

Looked like it worked a treat elder is a bugger to winch out unless you can get a straight lift up the roots might not be deep but there’s a lot of them and they grab on tight lol was hard to see if the clutch was slipping but by the sound of the engine it wasn’t

That knocked the cobwebs out of the old winch. What is it rated for. I didn't think it would work in the yard, it wouldn't be able to dig in. Good video Dan. Never say never.

There's something to be said for things that you can just "tinker with" and get the spanners and wire brush out rather than "plug in" to a computer. Guess I'm just old.... Also I was itching just watching you wade into those nettles. Eeeeek.

Does the amount of cable that you have out make a difference (gearing, weight etc)? Also, could have been worthwhile pulling one with another tractor (bigger one) to make a comparison. Thanks for your time Dan Yours Chris.

If you were using it professionaly in the day I wonder if you would use snatch blocks to gain more power rather than a straight pull Dan .I received my sticker Dan me and my youngest lad have put it on the lower back glass window of my international 785xl when we go for days out on tractor road runs and ploughing you may get a few more subs really appreciated thanks Dan regards Nick

You are sitting directly in the line of fire if you are sitting in the drivers seat! The hook or cable could take your head off when they fail.

Perhaps one of your friends has an Allen scythe and would exercise it on the weeds there?😁

Yeh a snatchblock will double your winching ability.

I would add another tractor to the front of the Fergy to give you a bit more traction, and have more cable spooled out as the less cable on the drum, within reason, the lower gearing you have. Word of warning though, the front tractor must only be used in a passive position, I have seen a winch tractor split in half by someone getting a bit too enthusiastic.

I like old tractors and especially MFs, but they are poor brain substitute. Tearing down an elderberry tree without picking the fruits first 18:13 is a stupid thing to do. By no means an econonomical catastrophe but is shows terrible ethics.
