Leather, like denim, wears in beautifully. It picks up a patina over time, much like the fades on our jeans. It has the ability to get better with use, much like our jeans. And it has the ability to contain a narrative. Again, much like a pair of raw jeans. These garments, or in the case of leather, accessories too. tell a story.
For leather jackets, nothing seems to be so divisive as the conversation between steer/cowhide vs horsehide.
So, that’s what I want to discuss today. I have experience breaking in both. I have my opinions on the pros and cons of both.
Looking for a dope new leather jacket? Then head over to our store and sales page. There you will find a vast selection from the stores and brands we know and trust: ceearedee.com/sales-list/

I've worn a horsehide Schott perfecto 618 for 10 years on my motorcycle, and you're right, breaking in horsehide is a totally different experience. It takes a little patience to soften up and mould to your shape, but the rewards are worth it. This jacket will outlive me by decades!

@@midwestmelancholy97 Well put it this way I'll own it for the rest of my life, I'm too attached to it to ever want to sell it! And like I mentioned, it only gets better and better. My dad bought a similar style Aero jacket in horsehide but gave up on it after a few weeks because he didn't have the patience to break it in... If you get one, wear it as much as you can to start with, live in it!

@@tobysmith7881 My Aero horsehide jacket that I bought second hand for £45, has survived 15 years of rough wear, including as a passenger on a bike, inside a barn fire beating the flames out with sacks and a couple of weeks every year getting showered with embers when we burn the stubble. To say that it has saved my life, may be an exaggeration, but it has certainly offered a lot of protection. A few months ago, I met a retired New York firefighter. He wore a Schott horsehide jacket in his early career and mentioned that although the modern kit is fireproof, it offers far less protection from exploding glass and falling debris. The change was due to the high maintenance and costs if replacing the leathers.

Great comparison! That Leftfield had a really cool design with the simplified design and longer body length combined with two way zipper. The horsehide jacket will get really beautiful with age! The commando with tea core horsehide would be a great combo!

I’ve got into the whole quality Mens wear thing about 5-6 years ago. I buy less but spend more🤣 but having said that my stuff is beautiful and classic so will last forever in my wardrobe. My wife has no idea how much some of my jackets and jeans and boots cost. Thank god😄 My steerhide Aero 30s 1/2 belt is fantastic but heavy and took me a good 6 months to wear in properly but it’s perfect now. Two Eastman A-2s in horse hide. Lighter and way less break in period. Patina on both is great. Didn’t know about the front quarter thing. Thanks!

If you still have the Enfield, I'd really be interested in an update. I think Shell Cordovan Boots patina so beautifully, I'd love to know if horsehide does as well since cordovan is ass fibers, not skin, haha. I agree with the style as well. It reminds me much more of an Aviator jacket than a Motorcycle jacket. It's the collar. Although I ride cruisers, I prefer the cafe racer Moto style jackets, but never considered horsehide. Thanks for the vid.

Greetings man. I have had experiences with several hides here in Mexico and i find the heavyweight difference to be between heavy cowhide and calfskin (Which, as weird as it may sound, here in Mexico is sometimes tanned a certain way resulting in a leather similar to horsehide in not stretching almost at all and having a particularly rigid hand without any finishing on top) while cowhide is not as rigid but is considerably thicker and looser in grain than the calf, while still being pebbled and firm as well and being used as the main motorcycle grade leathers here in the country. The thing is, usually the calfskins finished that way are very thin, around 0.8mm or 2oz. in thickness, are very lightweight pretty much like lambskin when used in a garment, but at the same time they are pretty much indestructible and impossible to scratch or damage, it's like armor, while cowhide is, again, stretchier, not as rigid, but far thicker, around 3 or 3.5oz or 1.2, 1.4mm in thickness. Both could very well be used as motorcycle grade leather. Personally i find the charm on any of the two: Cowhide forms and molds better into your body shape and it is easier to wear even when being thick. Calf, on the other side, is harder to wear because of its rigidity. And it indeed is a matter of personal preference. I do not have currently any idea on which one could last the most, but i will find out over the years. I yet to have a horsehide jacket, but here, the hides are finished as soft calfskins and do not have rigidity or firmness of consistency. Lambskins in my opinion here are tanned poorly and result in hides which get damaged very easily (Letting them soak in the tannins for longer, using less chemicals to dehair them and leaving them thicker would be a great solution to that) and steerhide / cowhide are always disguised between them and you cannot spot them from eachother, but anyway, besides heavyweight jackets (Most production of jackets, i'm guessing some 80% of the ones you see at any leather garment stores, are thin lambskin) they are normally used for bags, footwear, and when vegetable tanned, for straps, belts and shoesoles. Greetings

Horsehide is lighter, smoother and tougher. Cowhide is more maleable, pourous are less resistant.
@AndresCuervoArt
@AndresCuervoArt 2 жыл бұрын
Cowhide has more tensile strength because cows grow in size a lot in comparison with horses, jacket we’re made out of horsehide in the 20’s - 40’s because the agricultural means of production used more horses than now days that we use machinery to do horse jobs. Steerhide is stiffer in comparison to cowhide and requieres a break in period the same happens to horsehide, they both have very different patina compared to cowhide but that depends on tanning process. Every company uses different hides and processing so a horsehide jacket from Schott will be very different in tanning process and hide feel compared to a buco real McCoy horsehide jacket. Old jackets horsehide or steerhide had an amazing patina because of the tanning process that had a tea or brown core the jackets now have a dyeing that goes to the other side so they won’t distress as cool as they did.
@AndresCuervoArt
@AndresCuervoArt 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to break in a leather jacket fast ride in a motorcycle with rain and sun, 1 single 8 hour ride with sun and rain would break in the leather and make it look amazing that would normally take years to achieve. Don’t fake the patina or the break in process with bathtubs or drying machines you need the jacket to break in with you inside to fit like a glove and to develop the perfect patina

I have a feelign that you generalize to much about horsehide and steerhide based on the two jackets you own. In reality the differences between horse and steer from the same tannery are very small. There are far more differences in wheight, feeling and stiffness between horseside from two different makers. In other words the tanning process has a bigger influence on the stiffness, character and feeling of the the hide than the animal it comes from. I can only reccomand you to ask different a jacket makers for leather samples. You will see and feel it first hand.
