Making earth anchors isn't tough, but it is always easier when you have someone to show you how to do it. I am a big fan of earth anchors, especially over rebar. They have tremendous holding power, and are very lightweight. You can tailor the stake to your needs, regarding length and anchor size. Whether you choose cable or chain, disposable or permanent, you should definitely consider earth anchors as a way to anchor your traps. Very good video. I also use from time to time earth anchors. I currently use up north here in Canada are hard steel 20" stakes I cut off of old conveyor belts used by potatoe farmers. One stake driven is all that is needed. If the soil is sandy than I will cross anchor with 2 stakes.

I just ordered some fox hollow stakes with the retrieval boss on them so its easier to pull. First time using them, plan to attach to my dp's. Do you find 12 inches is enough to hold coyote/raccoon in say lawn/pasture or would I be smart to go a little longer? Mostly trap nuisance jobs. Thanks for the great content! Keep up the great work.

If you look up the word swage in the dictionary you'll be surprised to find you don't need an expensive tool to compress one. Just set it on a hard surface (an anvil ?) and wack it with a hammer?? 50 years ago our stakes were 16" long, 3/8" steel with a bent arrow point shape welded on the bottom. The top had a washer welded on and an s -hook as a swivel. I trapped the Adirondacks for 20+ years and never lost one.

What diameter cable are you using ? Great content mate i am using your information to trap wild dogs here in Australia, Thank you for what you do.

That's awesome, that would be a dream trip to get to trap Australia one day. I use 3/32 inch cable for all my earth anchors. So are you trapping for ranchers that pay you to trap? I'm assuming since I can't imagine there is a wild dog fur market. Do you have any type of fur market down there? I know you have red foxes in some areas

@@coyotetrappingschool1575 We trap only as predator control over here ( there are some areas of Australia that do get bounties for wild dogs, foxes and feral cats but not around me ) the fur market dropped out many years ago. Foxes are my main game because I live in a sheep raising / lambing area. I am a vertebrate pest controller so I trap and shoot vermin as a living ( not a very lucrative living but pays the bills ) Wild dogs are becoming a very big problem in the northern parts of my state so I will be traveling to go do some control very soon. I watch your videos because i would guess trapping Coyotes and Australian wild dogs would be similar. I have just purchased some earth anchors and was thinking of making up my own as well to try to cut costs a little. I love using the MB550's like you, I learnt from you to adjust the pan tension by filing the night latch on a tiny bit of angle, made them light enough to get even the lightest footed fox. Its pretty cool that something I post can help you on the other side of the world! Those are some pretty neat photos on your website, looks like some big country! I'm guessing you cover a lot of ground in your work. Some areas of the US you can get paid to trap coyotes, but it is usually a lot of travel time. There are definitely some home made earth anchor options, and one of the cheapest I found are POGO anchors. You make them yourself but its just a fender washer and a J hook. Really simple and you can get larger washers to accomodate softer soils. Might be worth check ing out.

@@coyotetrappingschool1575 I think your videos are some of the most informative I have come across, Going through the basics is essential. Yep it is massive country here, out in the bush you will go weeks without seeing anyone at all, I recently worked on a property that is 1000km2 ( i don't know what that is in miles ). I will have a more in depth look into the POGO anchors, cheap and effective is what I need. Thanks again Tom

You can get them in 1 1/4" for very hard ground, 1 1/2" for normal ground, and 2" for soft ground. They are just fender washers so as long as the j hook fits in the middle you can find a variety of sizes
