To the untrained eye conibear, or bodygrip, traps can look quite odd. But they are very simple to set and quite effective at trapping furbearers. For larger conibears it does help to have a trap setter, and you should always use a safety gripper when using large conibear traps. Otherwise its straightforward to depress the springs, using the safety hooks to hold the springs in place, then squeeze the jaws together and put the dog notch on the trigger. Its easier to explain through video than words! To learn more about trapping visit www.coyotetrappingschool.com

Best setting video ever!. This guy was clear and walked us through everything. I seen multiple other videos and nobody explained it like this. Every person would leave something out on the other videos even after watching multiple other ones i still didnt get all the information this guy had. Not just what he told us but how he delivered his instructions. Thank you for the most helpful video I've found on these traps.

VERY effect traps. I've been using them for 7 years now for trapping woodchucks on my property. I've caught 43 in the past 7 years. Took 2-3 years off though for health issues. Got 5 this year along with 5 possums and 3 skunks.

This video is fantastic. I bought a couple traps because I have a woodchuck problem at my house. I know these things can be dangerous and I've never touched one in my entire life. Thanks to this video, I was able to set the traps safely. Now I'm crossing my fingers that I find me a woodchuck. Or two

A piece of about 3/8" braided rope with a loop big enough to freely put your booted foot into makes a great trap setter. I especially like the way a slight reduction in pressure on the rope eases the spring into the safety catch. Just as I close the jaws but before I set the trigger I put the safety catch on. Setting the trigger always slightly releases the two spring safeties.

330's are way easier to set by hand than 220's. The larger spring gives you more leverage and more to hold onto. I set my 330's by hand. I use setting tongs to set 220's.
@Shipfixer
@Shipfixer 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent demonstration and advice! A 220 got my hand once. That was enough for me to be damn careful when setting these things. That 220 really messed up my hand. I can imagine what a 330 would do. Instant LIKE and Subscribe! Greetings from Alaska.

I was wondering what this would do to a hand. If it's capable of killing a woodchuck or raccoon, I can't imagine it would be real comfortable.

Sounds like the beleisle is superior than the other trap you demonstrated with. I'm sure the cost is significant, but with the safety catches it would be worth it.
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 4 жыл бұрын
The cost isn't that significant more, but you'll make up the additional cost with catches that you wouldn't have made with other traps, tail, foot and leg catches that in another trap the beaver would have come out of

Great illustration! Thank you. I don't know traps, but it would seem to me that the safeties on the 330 are upside-down. If the latch was facing down, gravity wouldn't keep trying to pull it off.
@justinzago1536
@justinzago1536 3 ай бұрын
The force on the dog (latch) is so much greater than the force caused by gravity. The trap can be placed in any orientation without it firing.

if you angle the springs down as are pulling the trigger and dog together, the safety catches will slide down on the springs and not disconnect as they did when you set the first trap.

Ha you sure don't want to get caught by them! I would say the Belisle are safer out of the box, but there are several different types of safety grippers made for conibear traps. So you could use one of those as well and still be safe. The Belisle traps are more expensive

You are right when you say if a bodygrip trap catches you, "you're in a world of hurt". A fellow trapper got himself caught in one last year and broke his hand. He had to walk out with the trap attached to get help. I've never seen an extra safety. I'll look that up. Nice video thanks.

Your attitude is repulsive to me. I would like to raise a garden and also not have to be concerned about rabies outbreaks. The only thing accomplished by misinformed people such as yourself is wildlife and variety imbalances wich cause far more suffering to the animals than trapping and hunting ever did.
@barrydutton9900

These traps have resulted in pet and wild animals being tortured to death. Trappers represent less than 1% of the population but make it unsafe for the rest of us, out pets and the wildlife we want to view. We need to end this barbaric "hobby" now!
@johnmead8437
@johnmead8437 2 жыл бұрын
Only stray or uncontrolled pets that are usually hunting wildlife are at risk. Their owners represent a far greater population percentage than trappers, who do whatever they can to avoid catching non-target species (particularly endangered ones cats/dogs like to destroy), even if for no better reason that trap with a non-target cannot catch an earner.
