Our CPUs produce a lot of heat, and we have many options for keeping our systems cool. In this video, you’ll learn about case fans, heat sinks, liquid cooling, and more.

Love these videos. Quick note on fans for anyone who hasn't built their own machine yet. 80mm is almost exclusive to prebuilt machines meant for office use. You will almost never see 80mm fans in gaming or video editing rigs. Because of their size, they have to spin very fast to move enough air in and out of your machine making them noisy. While 120mm are the most common by far, 140mm has been slowly pushing its way to be a contender for the top spot. Comparing 120mm and 140mm, the 140mm offers equal amounts of air flow while spinning slower. This essentially means you can get the same air flow while the fan runs at a lower speed, making it produce less noise and extending the lifespan of the fan motor. You might be asking "Why wouldn't everyone buy 140mm then?" The answer is it depends on the chassis you are choosing to build your computer inside. The slots for the screws have to match the type of case fan you're attempting to install. A lot of cases at the time of writing this support both 120mm and 140mm by having both slots drilled out in the front, top, and rear of the case. 200mm is a very uncommon form factor, and generally if the case is going to support this size it will come with the 200mm fans preinstalled. In summary, bigger fan = less revolutions to move the same amount of air = less noise = longer component life. The best advice I can give: use the biggest size your case will allow you to install.

I wish I’d watched the PM videos prior to building my first three computers but it’s like reading the book then watching a movie at least. Now I’m studying for my certifications.
