Another tip for checking if your AIO pump is dead is that you put a load on your CPU then feel the temperature of both tubes an you should notice that one tube is hotter than the other which means the pump is in working order as the fluid is circulating the unit correctly. However If you feel that both tubes are getting equally as hot then there may be a pump problem. Thats what Ive used to determine dead AIOs in the past anyway.

Very simple yet effective way of demonstrating the different thermal compound application methods, just use a transparent object to stimulate a heatsink applying pressure to the thermal compound and CPU and you can observe the way the thermal compound spreads, haven't seen that before for some reason, well done.

About the warning when your pump failed. I've seen the option to turn on a pump failure warning inside the BIOS/UEFI when the board is equipped with a pump header. When the pump is not turning for whatever reason you'll either get a message on screen or a beep code (I've seen both). It's been a thing on ASUS, MSI and GIGABYTE but I'm not sure about the rest and I'm not sure if all the boards come with it.

You forgot the possibility of a clog in the AIO system. Had one in my MSI form in the block that goes over the cpu. Was easy to fix but for a bit I thought the pump was dead already after only a year. Just flushed it out and gave it fresh fluid and it works fine now. Had to use some compressed air to fully remove the gunk and several days to fully remove the chunks that had formed.

One other thing, if it's an older system overheating and you're using a CPU fan, check the grills for dust and dirt. If there is too much dust inside of the fan grills, none of the air from the fan will make it down to actually cool the CPU.

I was concerned that my AIO pump had died and I actually grabbed a stethoscope I had and placed it on the pump block, this works really well, you can clearly hear the pump running, even ramping up and down if it's a PWM pump, good tip! It's also VERY easy to over tighten CPU coolers, they only need to be finger tight if they don't have the limiting screws with pressure springs, I learned that the hard way, my pc shut down in the middle of a Windows install because it was over tightened so bad that it overheated and shut down

Hi, Mr. Salazar. I had aio pump failed issue previously. Didn't realized the pump was dead for 2-3 days coz I put it on 3000G for looks purposes and slight OCed - it's super low TDP chip. So didn't detect the problem since the OCed didnt increased the temp much. No problem with gaming and daily usage. How I found out was through HWinfo data + finger sense. HWinfo shows ZERO rpm from the AIO ports. and by having a touch and focus I can feel there's no "feelin" from the AIO. LED on but there's no "motor/engine feelin" to it. I would like to suggest that using those monitoring software to check the AIO condition. My two sen on this. Thanks

After a solid, long lifespan I'm pretty sure my AIO is going out. My AIO has a LED in the water block that flashes red when the CPU is getting too hot (which it is doing a lot lately). Now I am thinking of going to a air cooler (not overclocked, don't need exceptional performance). My question: Is there a separate device that I can install that will track my CPU temps and alert me if they get too high (like the led on the AIO waterblock)? I know about software like core temp, but I'd like something i can just look over and glance at in games or whatever without having to alt tab, or running something in the background.

In the NZXT Cam software you can see the pump speed so that is another quick way to check if the pump is operating. It also shows the fan speed on the radiator.

Someone help me im getting stutters in game like rocket league and minecraft. Weird thing is that I can get very high frames but for some reason in almost all games I play it dips to 47-55 fps and starts to stutter. Even with v-sync turned on still has the same problem. All drivers up to date but I had the same problem with my old gpu. When i swapped my gpu same problem. I see one core is pegged at 100% which may be the cause I JUST NEED HELP.

It was today that my CPU overheats. After my cleaning routine and change of the thermal paste when I boot the pc I saw my CPU temp running around 50-63 C° in idle and when I was running a game it was going to 80-85 sometimes 90 but I don't understand why. Hope you can reply to my comment and help me

Hey Greg. I was wondering if you might do a video about the best way to route fan cables? I have 5 fans plus the cpu fan and they are all plugged into the motherboard. I don’t see much I can do with them, but wondered if you had suggestions. Thanks!
@llamacannon1714
@llamacannon1714 2 жыл бұрын
Atleast for the CPU fan you can do a trick Greg usually uses, route the cable underneath the cooler, it hides the wire for a large portion of the length.
@brando3342
@brando3342 2 жыл бұрын
@@llamacannon1714 Yes, that’s a good idea. I have a hyper 212 so I just left the cord bundled with the twist tie, then I jammed it into the empty space in the side of the fan. It’s pretty well out of the way. The thing is, I have a white case, so I have 5 black cords all running behind the motherboard and then back out again. Not really sure there is much that can be done. Thanks for the advice 👌

I would like to add something to checking fluid flow on an AIO. Grab the pipes one at a time. When I grabbed them both, I couldn't tell if I was feeling fluid motion, or just the general vibrations from my six case fans and the three on my GPU. When I grabbed them individually, I could distinctly tell the direction of flow on both pipes. That told me for sure that it was functioning properly.

For the warning of when your pump failed, have HWiNFO run at low polling rate with only couple of temps (CPU/GPU, whatever is needed to be monitors) + pump RPM. If temps stay too high for too long or if pump RPM drops to zero/goes insanely high/is null then you can run a shutdown script for the PC, as well as probs a warning message popup.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the fourth most common way CPUs can overheat: Because the user's a filthy animal who never cleans their PC. I ran into that problem about a month ago. I kept getting dangerously close to shutdown from overheating (i.e. breaking about 208F under load, but around 128F when idle) so I powered down to have a look. I had a handy tool to hook up 3/4-pin headers to a molex connector and from there to a power brick with a switch so I could test each fan individually without unmounting to verify it worked. Since obviously they were all working I decided that before I'd go tearing into the CPU I should perhaps look at the CPU fan and... that's when I saw it. A solid mat of dust completing covering the cooler just below my CPU fan. I hadn't cleaned it once since I built this case about 4 years ago. It took me a good half an hour of going at that with a vacuum, cotton swabs, canned air, and even paper towels to clean it out. I finished cleaning all the other fans and reassembled. It worked. I now average around 88F idle and maybe 116F under load. Lesson learned: dust is an EXCELLENT thermal insulator.
