Not surprised the CR 500 won - its always been and always will be a super fast amazing bike.

Raced a 1985 KTM 500 in 1988, as a 15 yr old boy, man it was exciting, yep after a few laps I couldn't hang onto it and Id crash from arm pump, but the thrill of all that power, had a 1985 cr 500 great fun, just turned 40, and I have just finished restoring my 1988 KTM 500, these 500s are true rocket ships, yes 4 strokes are smooth n nice, but id like to see a 500 2 stroke class back, for me I just like to see which guys could man handle these bikes, they are difficult to ride, but awesome, gone are the days of brutal and exciting, our choices are been taken away from us

Moral of this story is, no matter what your riding here, dont be the guy behind the 5hundo's or 450's. Unless of course you love that one huge roosted rock in your grill =)

Thanks for your comments Chris but they don't apply to the 500. Stock horsepower of 64.6 on a 2001 is developed at 6000 RPM. Also note the torque figures which are nearly twice what a 450 produces. Torque is where it's at. 450's are fun, easy to ride bikes. They just don't quite have the grin producing, fear of God sensation that a big bore two stroke gives you.

My CRF250L would be like 10 miles behind...lol!

Those 500cc two stroke are incredibly fast... The only thing really that turns me off about two strokes are that they burn quite a bit more gas/oil than 4 stroke engines and they are not as reliable. Sure if something goes wrong they are very cheap to fix compared 4 stroke motors but still.... Really it comes down to preference! All good and powerful bikes. Its hard to go wrong!

great vid really didnt expect to see the 450 demolished like that. i had a honda 250 2 stroke 3 years ago and everybody kept telling be to get rid of it and get with the times and buy a 450 so i did. i really like it but i still miss the sound and the rush u get from the unpredictable power band of the 2 strokes. just hanging on was half the fun.

No surprise here i have personally have had my 97' CR500 up 70-80 mph in a wash in moab. CR500 is a sprint bike you will get more top end with different sprocket setup but the CR500 is the best woods bike with a gnarly and torque sprocket setup no 4 stroke compares.

i used to race open class with my cr500 when 4 strokes where just catching on. I would ride the clutch in 2nd off the gate and burn then to the first turn then I would get passed and wind up finishing 4th or 5th. I miss those days:)

The newer fourstroke bikes have gotten better but still cannot compete with the simple design of a two stroke engine for power/cc ratio. Look at ktms 125 putting out over 35hp just incredible! Go CR500!!

@c3028040 I agree - my mate picked a 99 Cr500 in Perth last weekend for $5500! That's a lot of money for an old bike. We're taking it out next weekend and see how it holds up to the 250's on the tight tracks - should make for some interesting vid's.

I love my crf450, I also loved my cr250 back in the day. But theres no debating, the 500 is one FAST bike that nothing can compete with.

I have a 2008 crf450r and I once rode a 1983 cr480r and about pissed myself. 4 speed air cooled rocket that would BLOW my crf450 out of the water. Scary power...but no fun at all to ride. So much breaking torque and power it was too much to handle other than wide open on a field

I drove a CR500 once at the age of 14. It certainly was a kick in the balls. Power wheelie in fourth despite me being placed on the fuel tank, and I'm not skinny...

very nice video... it shows exactly that may CR500 and CRF450 output almost the same horsepower (55 vs 50 ps) but 2t are mush faster than 4T.

@sbartasek i've had the motor worked abit, the gearing does alot, but the 500's in general do have longer gears then the 450's

here is a great example of what a 500 two stroke does to the 450's. Same as racing against a 250 two stroke. The real questions is how much wheel spin off the start does the 500 suffer before grabbing?

ive raced both, i started out competeing beleive it or not on a 1986 cr 500, i was 19 then went down the way to 250 2 strokes, then the fourstrokes hit the scene in 1998 and have riden 4 strokes eversince i think if your just playing around a 2 stroke is great fun but to compete i think the 4 stroke is easier and more forgiving.

@999HitMan666 lol, i am in the orange jacket my bike has been ported and polished and on 2nd bore, the 3 450's r pretty much stock , the yz is stock, the other 2 500's r stock and the 500af has been ported n polished n 2nd bore too. at 3:18 on the right thats the 500af.

It's all about the torque. The CR500 has almost twice the torque of a CRF450.

This is a pretty good area for this type of race. 450s are fast because they transmit power to the ground effectively. If you really want to see a test of outright power then you need a place that can absorb all of the power a bike throws down. Sand is the only place I can hold my 500 open. Put the same paddle tire on both bikes and have at it. Ive been beat by 450s but its rare.

Not sure about anything else on that one. From memory on the 250 i know he had a 38t on the back, not sure about the engine but if you call being less than 60kg a mod then that definitely helped. All the 450 riders in that vid were sizable boys all weighing more than 100kg
