Hi Tim, I am a recreational Crabber in Florida. We use Cored/Weighted line so it sinks in the water more or less below the buoy. It prevents excess line floating out on the surface away from the buoy where it can't be easily seen. I am so so sorry for your experience. I personally never set pots in the vicinity of a channel.

The great loop is most interesting when you go in season otherwise it's cold and most things are closed.

Careful in the Chesapeake Bay, we used to see crab pots set in a line crossing the channel!

If you haven't already done it I would recommend the North Channel area of Ontario as an excellent summer cruising grounds. Killarney, Bay Fine, Little Current, Spanish, and Gore Bay are some of the best destinations I have had the pleasure of visiting. And if you are planning on heading South, the Illinois and Tombigbee Rivers are the way to go.

I'd love to see you go down the Mississippi. The Loop is on my bucket list.

Why not dock and fly to Canada? Visit family and fly back to the boat. You'd be a lot closer to the warmth instead of putting hours on that diesel. Nothing wrong with going on the hard and working a few months in Mc D's or Home Depot to build up that kitty. Delos had to do it...

@Lady K Sailing, @19:53, that's a Large ATB (Articulated Tug Barge) owned my OSG. She runs from the Philly area to Bigstone anchorage where she Lighters (takes cargo (crude oil) off of Supertankers so they can bring their draft up enough so they can make it up the Delaware River.

Don't know how far North you want to go but Prince Edward Island is a cool place! Plus, with the record high Lake Ontario Level, you would make great time out the St. Lawrence Seaway. Or, even turn South along the Maine coast.

The steel core is inside the crab pot line in order that the line sinks. They don't want it floating on the surface when the tide is low causing an even greater hazard to traffic.

Your videos are looking very pro now. That green stuff is called duckweed which I actually bought from a pet supply place so my baby fry had a place to hide in. Very cool so once you leave Canada again why not check out Cuba? I am with you in spirit so go where the wind blows you.

Going down the Mississippi or the Tenn Tom would be very interesting, but it is too late in the year. You will hit cold weather. But you are from Canada so what if the mornings are below freezing !

Buy a kicker plate and an outboard. That will prevent such emergencies in the future maybe. You can always cut rope off an outboard.

I’m fully aware of he issue of crab pots in the ICW for some reason they drop them very close to the main channel at times the buoy can be in the edge of the channel on a rather choppy day the buoy can be very hard to see at a distance and on my boat from the helm I can see directly in front of my boats clipper bow whe. I get close. So one day I drove right over a buoy and I could hear it on the hull all the way down and then it happened sucked it right in the prop by the time I could do anything it was all the way up damaged my prop bad and later after I cleared the line I had two big chunks missing for two blades and one blade broke off completely. As you can imagine the prop was way out of balance and vibration was horrible. Cost me a lot of head ache haulout to change the prop plus the cost of the new prop. I was still well inside the channel markers when it happened. And inside the charted course on my chart plotter. So ya you need to watch for crab pots even if you’re in the channel. The crab fishermen don’t intentionally drop them in the channel but they do drop them close enough that the line allows the buoy to be inside the channel.

Quick. Do this today! Get a membership in Tow Boat US or Sea Tow.

Hey, if/when you come back up the Erie Canal, look me up. I'm not a boater but am interested in becoming one. (Actually looking at a 26 foot Grampian at the moment.) I live about 300 yards from the Canal near Tonawanda. West Canal Park and Marina is right nearby so you can dock within walking distance to my house. (Shoreline sounding is 8 feet there, lots of depth) There is a grocery and a station that sells diesel fuel nearby as well, so it's a convenient place to stop. If you need to grab some food or fuel or whatnot I would happily chauffer you around, just let me know when you will be in the area, if you are coming by.

What about spending some time up in the Trent Severn? I know not “sailing” but neither would is the Mississippi. I’ve grown more interested in exploring some of the 20 or so thousands of miles of rivers and lakes in the US inland. Pretty cool where you can go. I’ll buy the barge and you bring the camera 😬. If you do make it to the gulf then you have a lot of great options waiting. I’ll look forward to following you along the way and thank you for sharing your experiences.

I've never heard of any sailing channels that did it other than Shawn and Julia basically because they bought their boat in Quebec city...they went up river to Champlain Lake and went down to New York that way...

Just one Idea Or, I'm not sure, but can you get to the Mississippi river from lake Michigan? Maybe like do Erie, huron, Michigan than out to the Mississippi. Can that be done? Love to hear your thoughts on that. Lastly when you stop in Canada you need a nice single lady crew member who likes to sail and take her along...

So with Sea Tow insurance, it still cost you out of pocket to get towed to dock? I have had Sea Tow for approx 8 years and fortunately never had to use them. And those D*** crab pots and nets in the ICW! I launch my bay boat a few miles from masonboro inlet at Wrightsville beach and run to that inlet when going offshore. Man, the early mornings are like driving a obstacle course avoiding pots and nets. I know those guys have to make a living but it sucks when they are in the channel.
