Crab Trap Experiment - Doors vs Funnels

In different regions people have a tendency to use different methods to catch crabs. In the Chesapeake Bay area they use trot lines and wire open crab traps. Down here on the Gulf Coast we use hand lines, soft ring nets, and wired box crab traps (referred to as pots up north). The crab traps have funnel entrances that make it easier for the crabs to get in than to get out. On the west coast, they catch Dungeness crabs in traps that have doors that swing open when pushed from the outside, but do not swing out, trapping the crabs inside.
I've wondered if we always use the best method to catch crabs or just follow tradition. With this in mind, I decided to test traps with doors instead of funnels to see if they work for blue claw crabs. Six traps is the legal limit for recreational crabbers, so that is how many I used in my experiment. I had three traps with funnels purchased in Westwego, Louisiana. I made three with a similar design, but with doors instead of funnels. I slightly weighted the doors so they would close easier. I had used doors on a couple of single chamber shallow water traps and they had worked, but you don't catch as many crabs in the single chamber traps.
On March 16, 2013, I set the traps out in a salt water canal near my house. I rotated between door and funnel traps. I let the traps soak for a full seven days and ran them on March 23rd. The crabs weren't running, but I did catch four good sized crabs, all in the funnel traps. I let them soak for five more days and ran them again on March 28th. This time I caught nine in the funnel traps and one in a door trap. The funnel traps had at least one crab on all pulls. I decided that it was pretty evident that we use funnel traps to catch blue claw crabs not only because of tradition, but because they work better.
I changed one of the door traps to a funnel traps and ran them one more time on March 30th. I came away with seven more crabs, six in the funnel traps and one in a door trap. Now, all six of the traps I have out have funnels and not doors.
On an up note, all but three of the crabs that I caught were over 6 ½", with four of the over 7".

A door at the end of the funnel would probably be a lot better. Funnels give them a good idea where to enter. Cool experiment though, thanks for taking the time to record it.

Thanks for your effort. You have done a service to crabbers everywhere by using real results to evaluate performance. Usually all we get is "I like this one." which tells us nothing. Newer ideas are not necessarily better. I was thinking I'd make a trap door pot before I saw your video (got some chicken wire in the shed and know a dock I can drop it off.) But now it will have funnels. Thanks again.

Funnels for mud crab, Doors for rock crab, They both work equally as well depending on environment. At least you took the time to experiment, And you can now concentrate on catching crab. Great Work..

Thanks for putting this on video. I have a few traps I run in SE Texas when I can keep the crab trap thieves from stealing them. I have experimented with baits, from the cheap chicken wieners , chicken legs, and dead fish. The cheap chicken wieners worked fairly well but fish worked about as well.

60 years ago I crabbed off of piers with lines baited with chicken necks or tripe (cow gut). Pulling in the line and netting them took a little skill and a lot of patience. I would normally catch a full bushel in about four hours which I sold for $5. Big money for a 10 year old.

Rule of thumb. Bay's are better with funnel type because of tidal currents. Ocean offshore? Both will work the same because there is less currents to open doors.

Nice experiment & video! My first thought was that the crab would get hung up in the door's wire mesh. I like your door idea even if it's not as effective as funnels. But what if the door were made of transparent plexiglass?

I've seen go pros with the crabs essentially giving up after not being able to get into the traps. They've caught but seems their greatest strength is also their weakness. Might keep them in..but only if they can get in at all.

I've found that the absolute bait for crabs is chunks of blue fish because of how oily and bloody the meat is. U should try it if u can.

I use chicken leg quarters or non-game fish for bait. I do not use weights on the bottom of the traps because I crab in shallow, relatively calm water. There were weights on the bottom of the trap doors.

You're really not supposed to put the traps in the middle of a channel. Boat propellers may get stuck on the ropes from the traps. Should set them more off to the side.
@noocann

Did I miss the part of the *weights* on the door traps??? You can run the funnel traps upside-down; you cannot do that with the door traps. There are tons of KZfaq vids of door traps catching crabs no problem, but these all had weights on the bottom so the traps ends up the correct side up. I think the majority of your doors traps in this vid did not sit right on the bottom, so thus the poor catch #'s. I don't see this vid proving anything useful except that "user error" is to blame...

***** why do you have to be insulting at the end, pointing out the error was enough.
@craigfos7630
@craigfos7630 8 жыл бұрын
The doors all had weights in them and were not upside down in the water. Funnel traps will catch crabs if they are upside down, but not as well. The crabs try to escape by swimming up and end up in the second chamber. This makes it more difficult for them to escape.
