Superb scene from Episode 3 of True Detective: Ritchie Montgomery as Henry Olivier - a crab trap man, grandfather of one victim, Rianne, gets questioned by the detectives - completely holding his own against Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, two of the best actors of the day at the top of their game. I mean he actually comes across as some local who got cast after producers saw him in a documentary. Great stuff, 10/10

It mirrors exactly what Rust is saying in the monologue leading up to our first visual shot of Reggie Ledoux. To paraphrase, while having to look at all those photos of murder victims and whatnot, he saw a look in their eyes, a realization that their entire lives, all their hopes and dreams, were nothing but a "dream of being a human." Aka sentient meat thinking it's going to be something it's not. I've been watching a bunch of random clips and just noticed this connection, the monologue is in a clip titled "A dream and the monster at the end of it."

Crab Man is a rare case of someone who earned Rust’s respect. I think Rust sees a smart, honest guy who doesn’t lie to himself about his station in life, and just does his duty. That’s rare to find in a person and Rust respects it deeply. Amazing character for barely 5 min of screen time.

"Everybody got big plans going to be something they not" crab trap mans version of Rusts life trap theory. Rust was definetly thinking of his time spent at the feet of the Sage of Louisiana and all his crabs who each one had big plans that didnt involve being cooked in a pot. He named his theory in honor. As arrogant as Rust can be and as bookish he doesnt scorn knowledge when he hears it no matter the source not even Marty is left unaffected by his encounter with Pelican Island Philosophy.

@@OHOHOHCOME shit man did you come away unaffected? Even Marty was changed and left questioning his brief interaction and the ways of the Master and why after all those years he had entrusted the box of wisdom to them. You can hear the reverence in his voice even in 2012. He is well aware of the profound effect he had on Rust even comparing the two nearly twenty years later. I bet they had some deep meditations in the car of silent reflection so profound that only silence or some odd shit Rust would say could ever do it justice and so Marty only goes so far and then holds his tongue not wanting to desecrate what must have been a sacred encounter. They even called ahead three hours just to get a glimpse and a brief few minutes with the Wise One.

Once a year I watch true detective series 1 through and everytime I do I notice something different. For some reason that never clicked before I realised that everything that went down wouldn't have happened without this guy and his ability to remember a name. Reggie LeDoux. Without him the rest of the story falls apart and that's why he's so imperative to the case. 1 relative, 1 name. If Rust and Marty hadn't have spoken to him the case would have gone to the task force and would have been swept under the rug. Rest might have carried on digging but would probably have been sacked or silenced in some way. Brilliant story writing. I wish sometimes I could watch the series through again for the 1st time.
