Do you use the same stuff to fill the cracks when it is in the brick?
@SheenaRea
@SheenaRea Жыл бұрын
Caution!! This really shouldn't be the solution, with all due respect. Yes, I did this and the caulk was too strong for the bricks. I had to remove the bad mortar joints with an angle grinder, and use the same type of mortar for the repointing. Usually a mix of sand, cement, and lime. It's not that hard to do, just takes more time and effort. If anyone is buying a brick house, BE SURE to examine the mortar joints, esp. around windows, etc. because anyone can cover up cracks too easily with caulk. This is not the "code" way to fix this. I like your positive attitude tho Kerri, you seem like a genuine person 🙂.
@gilph3
@gilph3 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean too strong?
@SheenaRea
@SheenaRea Жыл бұрын
@@gilph3 The original mortar used in my house is of a softer nature, that is: lime and sand mortar which allows the bricks to "breathe." It's what they used in 1946 on my home. If someone uses a strong caulk on soft brickwork, it can cause spalling, or eventual deterioration of the bricks.
@annhans3535

That's what I am thinking too. However, she did say it was brick veneer. How if you have actual brick, don't use this on your bricks. Use an actual mortar mix, not concrete to make your repairs. My bricks are 130 years old and I am very fussy about how they are treated.
@tonyc7352
@tonyc7352 7 ай бұрын
Yes, I agree. This video is bad advice, not that it is just "another way", it is flat wrong. Brick mortar (unlike cement) isn't meant to hold bricks together as much as hold them apart. If there is movement in a brick wall you want the crack to happen at the mortar line, not the brick which is the risk if you use cement instead of mortar.
@susiealverson1

I’m a diy’er too. Thank you for the video. Other videos I’ve viewed have stated that you should spray the old mortar with water first before applying new cement or mortar, to prevent shrinkage. At least that’s what you should do on patio cracked mortar repairs. Great job, by he way. I tape my brick/flagstone with painters tape to keep the wet mortar off the brick/stones and remove as soon as I finish the job, in case any wet mortar seeped under the tape.
@glennaharris7455
@glennaharris7455 Жыл бұрын
She is using caulk, not mortar so the water would actually prevent the caulk from sticking, not help assist with shrinkage. I like the tape idea though!

No……this is not how to do this. You need a mortar or tile saw with the right blade, and you cut the mortar out from between the bricks, and replace the mortar. Don't use caulk. This is just a cosmetic fix, you need new mortor.

Great video btw. Quick question pls. Are those cracks normal ? Or would you be concerned of structural damage ? I’ve got similar ( a bit thinner ) cracks between the bricks cement mortar not the bricks. Is it quite normal in other words ?

No shit Sherlock. If you'd have listened the first time, you'd have heard her say it was for a cosmetic repair only if there was no structural damage.
@sacredgroovetube
@sacredgroovetube 3 жыл бұрын
She also said first, call a specialist to determine if you need structural repair. A brick wall is built about 3 inches away from the house and is designed not to support the house, it is designed to protect the house from the weather. Cracks should be taken care of soon as possible because they are an entry for termites. Most people are not aware of the fact that similar to ocean tides we also have Earth tides. The ground expands and contracts. To hear her all I had to do was turn up the volume. I have people tell me that they have called foundation repair people to fix a crack like this by jacking up the foundation and are told it will cost $10,000.00 dollars. This is a simple repair you can do yourself for around $20.00 or less.

They grind out the old mortar and use a big squeeze thing like used to decorate a cake full of mortar and fill in the vertical's first and horizontals last . This way looks ok but you still have old mortar there that will continue to crumble.. I think you would have t revisit it now and then .

@luxman9463

@@emilyp143 , depends. Nothing wrong with using caulk but you need to at least clear the crack of any loose debris. Ideally you want a V shape which will allow more caulk to be pushed into the crack.
