I would usually shye away from one of your classic sudokus, as I've never felt the desire to learn the higher level techniques (the fun for me is in figuring things out for myself, not swotting up on esoteric tricks, and harder classics often seem impenetrable). I'm glad I gave this one a shot though, as it proved quite approachable. 15 minutes and I was done. Fun puzzle, and I enjoyed a bit of colouring too.

Hanabi is my favourite classic ever for its trick and all the detail of how that trick was worked into the puzzle. Your puzzle in the 500k set is also fantastic. While Hanabi holds too well for the 500k to overtake it, I've never seen something like it before, and I was left in awe once I saw what the trick accomplished. That aspect might well be the most beatiful thing I've ever seen in a classic sudoku. You have an incredible talent that few could ever hope to match. To even think of these ideas within the constraints of classic sudoku makes the skill clear, but taking those ideas and executing them so elegantly is what really sets your puzzles apart.

does this trick have a name? is it a skyscraper as Simon posited early on? I didn't spot it, but I paused when Simon stated r1c2 can only be 9 and, once I saw the impact, I looked back and followed the logic. Very masterful indeed!

I personally would like to see more classic sudokus on the channel as someone who has mainly only done computer generated puzzles I don't know all of the classic sudoku logic. Though I have been watching the channel now for about 3 months it is still tricky finding so the more "advance" logic.

Great video. I would love to see more classics like this on the channel. Simon and Mark have gained quite a following over the past few years. Many in the past who joined wanting to learn classic sudoku already know the older classic sudoku tricks, but the newcomers to the channel have to search some of the older videos to see some of the classic sudoku techniques in action because some of the variant sudoku is above their skill level.

"Which does about as much use as a chocolate teapot" 😄 From the prospective of a non-English-speaking person I love those typically British cute little nursery phrases and exclamations that he scatters around in all of his videos. And the Vincent cover at the beginning just gave me goosebumps and brought to memory an old italian TV series _Lungo il fiume e sull'acqua_ that had that song as the opening theme 🫶

Longtime occasional watcher, but just started actually trying the puzzles myself. Excited that I actually finished one for once. I did stall out after some extensive pencil markings, and needed Simon's insight at 12:30. That started unraveling the pencil marks pretty quick though and ended up taking about 3x what it took Simon overall.

@Swisswavey

Nope. I didn't miss anything, I'm just slow. I got the 7&8 being different in a slightly different way, although the logic amounts to the same thing. Tracing where the cell in box 1 lives in box 7 tells you where it is in box 9, and so the cell in box 3 has to be the other one. Far easier for my brain than Simon's way!
@WhoStoleMyAlias
@WhoStoleMyAlias Жыл бұрын
Twice the time for me. I got distracted by the 2s in box 7 and 9. Trying to trace what would happen for the two possible permutations I ended up filling the whole grid on the first attempt but it felt like bifurcation so I traced back to check the other one and noted that both paths gave me the 9 in the same position in box 1 which seemed odd and so I rechecked and it finally occurred to me that something funny was happening with 7s and 8s and found the same path you used. Referencing Simon's colouring scheme, green in r2c1 must return in row 7 in box 7, must return in column 9 in box 9, which means that r1c9 is not green. In the end it was still the 2s that led to solving the puzzle, I had just missed the logic why 2 had to go where it did in box 9.

This is one of those frustrating puzzles where you either are able to immediately spot the one key trick, and complete it in a few minutes, or completely fail to do so and stare at the grid for hours not knowing what to do. One guess which group I fell into.... I tried for an hour, and got it mostly reduced down to its minimum gridlock configuration, except for not noticing the 29 pair reduction in B9. I had to watch the video to get past that, and to get the hint about the 78 interactions. Once Simon mentioned it, though, I quickly recognized how it resolved the gridlock-I had previously considered what would happen if the 78s at the top were different-and got it all solved very quickly after that. The red herring configuration of the 2s didn't help things, either. My total time was just under an hour, but I can't really count it because I wasn't able to solve it by myself.

Being the slow and methodical sort that I am, I did all the pencil marks in the corners and the "reasonable" pencil marks in the centers. I noticed the same 78 pairs that you colored green and orange, and I was stuck. As always, your narrative about how they affected the two cells that saw each of them unlocked my solve. It was straightforward and fun after that. This was a marvelous and interesting puzzle (thanks Shye!), much more fun than my daily "hard" NYT sudoko. Count me as a subscriber who would greatly appreciate more classic Sudoku puzzles on the channel.

Looking at groups of cells and identifying that they must contain different digits is something that I have been able to identify in previous puzzles, but I never put together in a way that I could explain to someone else what it is that you are supposed to do with them. Looking at which cells observe them should have been obvious in retrospect. I am really glad that you put up this video!

Very nice appetizer for Mark's longer video later on - and how many times do we say that? Almost never! Thank you for playing the guitar and singing in the intro (you have a very nice voice, Simon), and for this puzzle. I saw that it was a short video, and a classic, so I listened to the intro (in which you read my son's name for solving the whole Duality pack - yay!) and then went and started the puzzle. I had a feeling that there was something going on with the 7s and 8s, and truly was nearly there, but then I decided I would rather see what you did. As soon as you pointed out the issue, I paused the video and solve the whole puzzle. I know that doesn't really count, because it would have taken me ages, I think, if I had not watched you. But it would have taken me even more ages if I had never discovered this channel. To answer a question: the occasional classic, especially if it is a beauty like this one or one of the harder, trickier ones, is nice. But the main fare on this channel has been variant sudoku, and I think that the emphasis is well placed. That said, if you and Mark enjoy the classic variety, then you should do them, because what you enjoy is what I enjoy watching. (And any length video is perfect.)

Much the same for me, and I think this puzzle neatly highlights the current limit of my sudoku ability. When Simon encouraged us to pause the video and have a think about why r1c2 was a 9 it only took me a few moments to work it out, but left to my own devices it would never have occurred to me to look at that particular cell. I'm not sure how to improve my ability to spot "weak points" - presumably just more practice!

I admit to having to backtrack on the 789 stuff before finally working it out 34 minutes... I'll take that for a video puzzle anyday.

Took a while for me (41:53) but I'm just happy I managed to figure it out, since this kind of thing is tricky for me

fyi, Andrew's solver found the 9 in box 1 with with 2 "grouped x-cycles" for each of the 7 and 8. (you need to disable the uniqueness rule first if you want to see)

I had to pencilmark the whole grid, colour all the "naked 78s" (if I can say so) with two colours, and see conflicts to find the 9 you found at 11mns. Took me 1h30 to place this 9, and 1h50 to solve it all. Had to do a sortfish on my colours, it was hard :D

Very nice. Once you see the 78 linkage everything else falls into place. The 4 in box 9 was available and helps the solve go a bit quicker.

30 minutes. It took me a while to find I could use the 78s in the boxes 7&9 to force the 9 in box 1. After that it only took me another couple minutes to realize I should color the 78 pairs. It was all over after that.

9:33. I was worried that this puzzle was going to have something obscure I couldn't figure out, but knowing there was a trick I spotted it in good time :)

Great intro, Simon! Also, it's nice to see a puzzle with some given digits every once in a while. 😆

7:57, happy to find the logic about the 7/8 pairs around the grid so quickly, lost a bit of time penciling in center digits instead of typing in the correct number for some reason.

I ended up mixing up the 7s and 8s and it took me about an hour before eventually giving up lol. I don't know all the crazy sudoku tech but there are ways you can figure it out without using the 7s and 8s but it is kind of a chore.

24:40 for me. I'm not usually interested in solving classic puzzles, as they tend to fall into either simple deduction puzzles or gauntlets of following 10+cell chains to eliminate a single value from one cell; repeat ad nauseam. But I trust these guys to find interesting puzzles, and was not disappointed to see how elegantly it solved. Once you see what the key cells are and plot where they can go, everything falls nicely into place.

I was 15 minutes into solving, when I realized I had mis-typed and somehow swapped the locations of the 2 and the 9 in Box #3.

Aw man, I almost had this without help! I got to the part where the 78 combo had to be different numbers, but didn't think to check the cells that are affected by both of them! Maybe next time
