This huge 3D Printer is one of the smartest I've ever reviewed - but can it live up to expectations and justify its high price tag?

This review has been a long time in the making, with Craftbot continually improving the FLOW series. I'll be using this 3D Printer in future projects on the channel and keep you updated on its performance going forward.
Slicing Profiles for Dual Colour will be added once tested on the latest firmware - abandoned, sorry. it sucks.

It is the kind of time, effort, honesty, and transparency you put into these reviews that keep me coming back to your channel again and again. Not having even the vaguest commercial interest in a 4,000$ large-scale open "PLA only" printer, nobody else would get me to sit through an almost 20 minute review. In short, thank you!

@jasonking7570
@jasonking7570 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but in a lot of situations where mirrors of printed parts are needed, the parts themselves will be labeled to set them apart and prevent mix up, such as having an R or L to signify left and right. Mirror mode does seem to have its uses, but basically any model that has some kind of text, logo, or anything like that, mirror mode won't be as effective

The Flsun Q5 is a great little printer! Deltas print so fast even at the “same” print speed thanks to the way faster acceleration and jerk it’s nuts. I still want to further upgrade the part cooling (more than just replacing the air guide) but otherwise it’s been fantastic for me, especially since I got it upgraded to the latest Marlin 2.0.6 firmware.

Mate great honest review Angus. My very first printer was a CreatBot which had a large build area for the day, it was 250 (X,Y) and 450(Z) and came with dual extruders which I never ended up using as I could never get it right. I also never used the full height of the Z axis as it would take along time to do large prints, from memory the longest print was 3 days and was for Mario & Luigi charaters which was with a .4 nozzle.

It would be nice to see a follow up to this review now that the teething pains for Craftbot have passed. I have one and love it. Regarding the mirror mode being a party trick think of it this way. A company builds a cool IDEX printer and includes Duplicate mode, Backup mode, and Support/Build material mode from each head. They put it to market. Reviewer gets it and says "guys, you've literally got two independent heads, how hard would it be to write a simple bit of code and have it mirrored?" Damned if they do and damned if they don't I guess. For me personally, it has a lot of uses in industrial applications or just one large symmetrical part split down the middle.

10:00 If the mirror mode works as it seem it does, and you use 3d printing to make actual pieces for use in real life projects, it is far less of a party trick that it might seem. From what I've done in metalworking, it is quite common to machine both the drawn part and the symmetric part. So, it should be incredibly nice to produce both of them at the same time, a single slice and all.

Yeah, OK, Roddenberry. Y'all act like a few position sensors and a decent software package are some kind of automation overload. Ever worked on cars? This is preschool in comparison. 3D printers are not complex machines, and they are in desperate need of QOL improvements. This machine offers the bare minimum functionality to serve as a usable appliance. Nobody is manually adjusting print heads and setting voltages in their laserjets. Why do we put up with this constant adjustment crap in 3D printers? Answer: They know you nerds will troubleshoot it for them.
@JrPlays
@JrPlays 3 жыл бұрын
chooseymomschoose Okay a couple question. Firstly who hurt you this bad to fuel this much anger/frustration in a comment. Also no one said 3D printing is so complex compared to putting together an engine I don’t see any comments so far from my scrolling so huh? And isn’t that how all products improve over time, people who are passionate will take things into their own hands and try their best to work with what they got. Hence a 3D printer that may not being working at its best, wait for a whole new one to come out or try your best to learn and fix it. No one is saying these are so complex and gcode is so complex so seriously man where is this anger come from. Don’t you find it great how a community can be built around anything (cars, 3dprinters, etc) that the community wants to upgrade. With that logic there is no point to working on a car, they are not complex machines just buy one and use it, just take it to the dealer when it needs servicing. Or you can work on it yourself as you said. So why do you work on cars if you can take it to a shop or dealership. Because you enjoy the community and it’s a fun job/hobby/whatever to you. Again where is this anger coming from
@HiddenWindshield
@HiddenWindshield 3 жыл бұрын
@@chooseymomschoose Yes, in point of fact you *did* see people manually adjusting print head settings in their printers... back when they first came out. As with any form of engineering, you need real-world experience and testing to improve your product.

I think mirror mode can be a good thing when printing fast, both heads going in a different direction at the same speed, they balance the acceleration of each other, making a neutral "action reaction" movement. I don't know if that makes sense...

Speaking of things needing a fix that shouldn't, I finally broke my last replacement print head spare for my big delta and had to go on a hunt for more. Long story short, having a somewhat proprietary effector plate is a massive pain even if it's "supposed to" take standard upgrade parts, which are slightly more difficult to score during our lovely covid era. Yeah... That's easy to fix if you have more than one machine that isn't in a pile of parts and wires. Note to self: get a back-up machine. 3 months later after finding said parts and import/customs waiting, she lives once again!!!

I have to say your reviews are fantastic! I bought this machine nearly 2 years ago, seduced by what it claimed it could do. I was reassured that all the problems had been ironed out, but no. The service was appalling. The machine a nightmare. I had every problem listed here, and all the problems highlighted on the 3d Printing Nerd channel. The BIG difference. Craftbot did not and would not replace the machine with a new working one. After 18 months and endless hassle they (very very reluctantly) took back the machine and refunded me. This is NOT a plug and play machine. If you are good at 3d printing and know how to fiddle about and make adjustments to the slicer etc, this can be a good machine, BUT if you are not experience keep well away. There are lots of known problems they will not admit to. On paper it is great, but it does not live up to that.

Cura works very well with multicolor prints. You need to be setting standby temp. If you set standby temp around 150c it won't ooze. You can also set Extruder End Gcode to park the nozzle over your purge area and it will drop it to 150c and be ready for the next layer.

Marlin 2 has a corner leveling feature that you can enable for the LCD where it probes the corners to find the one that is closest to the probe. It then moves to the other three at that height and waits for you to turn the knob until the probe triggers. The process is much more reliable than the piece of paper method. You have to enable it in Marlin to make it available. I cut the probing speed in half to improve the accuracy. Turn all of your knobs until they get more difficult to turn before you start the process.

Great review Angus as always. Would you please do a current review of Octoprint. I say this because Octoprint is new to me and I was blown away with how easy it is to implement and it gives you most of the functionality of this printer. I bought a Rasperry Pi 4, download the Octoprint image for it and just plugged it into my CR-10. I didn't bother with the R-Pi WiFi since I have wired Ethernet throughout my house even in my garage. I've now relocated my other printers to the garage and I monitor them via webcam and their interface pages on my browser toolbar. Octoprint has been around for a while and I just feel a quick review by your esteemed self would be useful to a lot of people.

Yeah, it's quite weird, it's one of the most important and useful things for 3D printing and a channel all about 3D printing doesn't have a video about it. Octoprint is awesome! Btw if you haven't noticed that yet, there is a few apps for Octoprint on the Play Store. Only occurred last week to me (after having used Octoprint for like 2 years) that there could be an app for it...

advantage of mirror mode over parallel mode is you can print the left side and right side at the same time. i.e. if you printed your left shoe, parallel mode would give you 2 left shoes and mirror mode would give you a left and a right shoe.

I print a lot of mirrored parts and think that feature would be useful for me, but I am still happy with my Printrbot Plus Metals, so not likely getting one of these. It's cool though. Good video.

Mirror mode is phenomenal for parts. If I need a bracket, I make the left side, mirror it, and I have the right.

So the Craftbot 3 had this great feature that actually measure the filament into the extruder to detect a problem. Sounds good if it actually worked. Instead it often constantly thinks there is a blockage when there isn't which causes its own problem.

Considering all the monitoring of positions, the fixed camera position, and a static background, it should be pretty easy to us image recognition to identify failed prints. I kinda doubt its onboard computers can handle that, but it's already set up to send and receive data.

Any time you have an object that you need two of, one for the left and one for the right, the mirror mode seems quite useful. If you don't need that, then it doesn't serve a purpose, but if you have that kind of symmetry in what you're building, I don't think it's just a party trick :-)

Mirror mode is very useful for us car enthusiasts. Many parts on the car is 2 of each and mirrored so I don't agree Angus, that mirror mode is just some cool party trick ;)

...and I have the flow IDEX but not XL-version. Have had some quirks with it, but got a new controller card and it works for my needs. However, I agree with your summary of the printer. There are some things that could have been more tested out. I think the electronics does open up for a lot of refinement going forward. Perhaps the screen should have been placed externally so that it doesn't get so hot.

We have a CNC mill at work that is similar to this, doesn't have independent heads though. It's really good for batch work.

Mirror mode would be great actually, if you need to print a left and right version of the same model. Very useful.
