The robots have been scaring us for over 100 years, so says Amelie Dinh, Head of Contextual Research for Bakken & Bæck. In this excerpt from the Imaginations of AI panel at D&AD Festival, Dinh touches on why the rich narrative of existential threat around machine learning has persisted since the 1920s. It’s there as far back as Greek mythology, and Frankenstein and the origin of words like ‘robot. So, how then, do we create a more nuanced, diverse, and accessible narrative about what AI is?
Panellists including Gabby Pearl (Google DeepMind) and Michelle Higa Fox (Buck) delve into the risks of this threatening AI narrative, and how to better communicate AI’s power as it touches every part of our lives. "It's important that the metaphors we use around AI aren't setting up power dynamics," Higa Fox stresses. Instead, it’s about showing that human individuality, creativity, and contribution are always related to the final product.
