Terrain Craft Chronicles

2 жыл бұрын

Elturel has fallen, it plunges toward its demise upon the bloody Plains of Avernus! And for that... a city must be built!
This is the first in series of builds to craft a large and sprawling fallen city terrain set. Although the initial reasons for the build are for my Descent into Avernus campaign they are totally useable as Frostgrave terrain or for making your way the dark streets of Mordheim City of the Damned! Or, in truth any city in your Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop RPG's.
This episode takes a deep dive into some colour theory... because rocks aren't grey!!! It may be fallen, broken and lost... but drab, dull and lifeless it is not :D
Enjoy my friends!...

Thank you for the quick color theory. You're the first crafter to even attempt explaining toning colors. When I teach painting toning colors is so hard for people to understand.

I just started using chromatic grey's for painting a treant miniature. I washed it with black first then dry brushed white over it. Then I alternated yellow, red and blue washes between more white dry brushing after the washes dried. I'll paint in thin oils over that.

Love it... grey is such a beautiful colour when given the opportunity to reflect a temperature, there is so much capacity for it to give life to any type of painting, it really is a crying shame that it is so often relegated to this lifeless nuetral mix of black and white... and oil glazes really are becoming the star of the show for me. Thanks for telling me your approach, it sounds fabulous!

Thanks for posting. I really liked to see you working with EVA instead of foamboard or that insulation foam. It is really interesting to see that this alternative achieve such great results. Plus, it is easier for me to get my hands on this material. Thanks again, very usefull.

That modularity at the end was really satisfying. Also, gonna need to try that "drybrush with light blue" effect, for some winter terrain.

Yes indeed... I need to play with the layouts more. I am also thinking of doing a little bit of conversion on my modular dungeon to extend the exterior potential of this sets modularity further still 😀. That blue will work really well for well aged ice for sure... glad that you liked it!

Hey thanks... I guess you are talking about my rocks aren't grey rant 😄... I just see so many folks go in with a lifeless flat grey, an even mix of black and white and whilst my colours are still grey they have a hue or temperature to them that is more exciting... plus just starting straight up with a bold colour can give you really dramatic or edgy finishes!

@@Terrain_Craft_Chronicles no not at all, i'm in hawaii and hike northern china and the west coast of north america. havent seen a dull grey rock yet! most of the 'mainland' rocks seem to have a cold duck egg blue kind of base, and in hawaii its basalt so gloss black with a full spectrum of highlights - looks like oil on the rocks. doesnt translate well at scale though.

This looks really great, although i think, the blue is too much. But it works for OSL if there's some kind of witch fire or something similar emitting blue light. But i will copy the techniques shown here for my Mordheim table.

Ya know I have been looking at a lot of my terrain architecture, including my original 3x3 tile set over the last few weeks and thinking I want to lighten it all up and shift the colour in a different direction 😆... I am just psyching myself up to how to rise to the task as I definitely don't want to make it all again! Glad you got a takeaway from it 👍

Dang it, Sean! I've been working on a modular town terrain video. Now, I may have to rethink. Yours is SO much simpler, than mine. XD These look great, and super useful, mate. I'm adoring the colour theory you've been laying on me. Absolutely going to begin using multiple washes, in specific areas; really like the blue and greens, in specific spots. Great vid, all around. Nicely done Oh, hey! Wear a respirator, when cutting foam, you madman

Thanks for the answer, do you prefer Eva foam over xps (insulation foam), if so why, I ma about to jump into terrain crafting and from what I watch so fare insulation foam is quite common, I was wondering what advantages of eva foam are in your eyes, I guess it is more durable and as you have mentioned in one of the vids is something get demaged it doesn't expose pink as expansion fome does. Anywho, I am really enjoying you vids and extremely inspirational make me believe in myself I can do it 😊 oh. Ps I am slightly concerned about heat treatment on eva foam... Does it have to be done? Otherwise it would be to pourers for the paint right?

Hey Chris, foam wire cutters won’t work with EVA foam, I use a knife mostly or if I have a lot of cutting to do then I use my tabletop bandsaw. This bandsaw is just a cheap one from Aldi in the UK. I did have affiliate links but unfortunately there were not enough purchases through it so Amazon closed them down and I have a few more months to wait before I can reactivate them! Thanks for asking though 🙂… best of luck
