Crista, one extra piece of info. The "Transcription of text" field is indexed/searchable to everyone on Ancestry if you complete it, vs. the notes field which can only be seen by the author and anyone tagged as "Editor" to your tree. By pasting the transcription to both Transcription of text and Notes, you're helping the community quite a bit!

Hi Crista, thanks for another great video. I have always wanted to know how to attach a source across too people, *i.e. birth record naming the parent and grandparents). In Ancestry, do I have re-craft that same citation 4 more x/s? It doesn't allow you to select the facts for other people when created the source. I like to us it for name sources as sometimes it is the only source you may get for parents or grandparents. Am I missing something? I am able to this in FTM and love that feature. Thanks in advance for your response.

At time marker 17:45 in this video, the sample screen for adding a new source shows main item #3 as a place to add media. This step is no longer present in the current version of the UI when adding a new source in Ancestry. Where is it now?

I was trying to copy over a derivative/custom Source Citation from a relative, but there was no save button on it. Any idea how to copy it over to my tree when there's not a save button? I'd rather not re-enter them all. Thanks for another great video.

Hi, so I got my DNA results back and it was pretty accurate. The only thing I questioned was my trace regions, I got 18 percent trace regions, which was a little higher then I was expecting. That percent is a huge chunk of me that I am now curious about. I was wondering, I have two trace regions that are above 4 percent, so are those the ones I should pay attention to? What makes some trace regions more certain than others? And i'm wondering if you guys update results over time or if I would have to take another DNA test in a few years when the system is more accurate? Thanks :)

How do I hyperlink ancestors to a source I created in Ancestry.com? I created a source for a marriage on the husband's profile, but it does not show up on the wife's profile because her name is not linked to it. The marriage sources FROM Ancestry.com links both husband and wife. How can this linkage be done with sources I create? So that I am not creating sources twice for each marriage (one for the husband's profile and then again for the wife's profile). No media is uploaded with this source, because it is from a copyrighted book.

Really wish that when I was manually browsing unindexed collections in ancestry and wanted to save one as a source to someone, I could automatically do so. Instead, it creates a web link. It's so tedious. I have an ancestor with probate proceedings that spanned 4 years where I had to manually create a source for each of the 10 or more times he came up.

Great info... I have a specific question. I get a lot of birth and death records from the specific states. What is the recommend way to create the repository, source and citation record for these types of items. My assumption is the following w/ an example of Oklahoma: Repository = Oklahoma State Department of Health Source = Oklahoma Birth Records Citation = Birth certificate for [My specific relative] Is that correct or is there another suggested way? Thanks again!

So, what about when the facts you want to attach to the new source aren't already listed? Do you still have to go back to the main fact page for the person and add each new fact to the source you created?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 8 жыл бұрын
If the facts aren't listed, you will need to add the fact and then attach it to the citation.

When creating a source, is it specific to the person whose fact page I'm on in Ancestry? If so, does it show up in lists for others when I want to create more new, different sources? If so, how do you differentiate them so you don't use the same source for someone else?

Hi there Troi Lilly. When you create a source, this will only be attached to the individual profile that you created the source within. That source should not appear when going to create a different source in another persons profile. We'll link some further information below which we hope will help a little more. Hi Crista, Sorry again for posting on an old video, but I am having problems with adding my own sources using birth/death or marriage certificates I have ordered. I created a generic Repository, & Source for Birth Records,Death Records & Marriage Records and then when I add a source to a family member I create a custom citation for the details in that particular document, but when I upload the document as an image whilst it does upload to the Source, it won't show me a thumbnail of that image, so at a glance of my tree I don't see that record as being attached unless I attach it to the fact directly as well, which is what your advising NOT to do. I tried calling Ancestry support but they told me this wasn't a feature that is supported for "Other Sources" surely this isn't true!
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 8 жыл бұрын
The thumbnail for the "other sources" is a generic image icon. However, you can go into profile gallery and see all of the images you have uploaded for an individual.

Hi there! I read the topics you sent me and these are answers I've seen before. They do not explain how to copy a source you have created to another person. When you view the source from the sources column on someones profile page, there is no save button. I've tried going to the create a source section and after choosing the title of the source I have created, the rest of it is not re-populated. I can't always remember what I used to describe the source, detail, repository, etc. I tried with the drop down menus, but it just basically created another new source with the same title. There has to be a way to do this without having to create a new source (which is basically re-creating the one you've already created and duplicating it.).

Hi, Judith. Thanks for getting back to us. We're sorry that our article wasn't helpful. When you create a new source, it should show in the dropdown menu. Since it isn't, can you please clear your cache and cookies, and try a different browser to see if you see the source in the drop down menu. We'll give you an article that we hope is helpful. support.ancestry.com/s/article/Fixing-Page-or-Button-Problems-on-Ancestry?language=en_US

I've created a couple of sources and I still find it confusing. The one thing I'm having trouble with is several months after creating a source, I find a new ancestor that I would like to use that same source for. There doesn't seem to be a way to just copy that source to another person. It seems you have to go in and use the drop down menus to create it again. At least when I tried at the top to pick the source I already created, it didn't populate the rest and I just had to do it again. Then, I noticed that the source was duplicated. I would also be interested in what you meant by ""cleaning up" some of those sources. I have duplicated sources or put something in there by mistake, can it be deleted? Thank you so much for all you do in explaining this stuff.

When adding a source, a lot of the time I need this source added to 2-4 other family members ie original document for marriage will have 1-husband, 2- wife, 3- mother or father of wife, and 4- a witness often within the family. Is there a way to tag other family members into a source, or add/copy to another person, so I dont have to recreate a whole new source up to 4x over each time!?

@@AncestryUS This makes sense and I'm going to start trying to add proper source citations. A couple things I've hit though: 1. I cannot find a way to have a citation for a birth link to the person and their parents. Looking at the article you link above, am I correct that I would have to manually enter this citation on the child, father, and mother? It seems very duplicative. 2. It also seems even though I can apply a manual source to multiple people, I have to reattach the media each time. Am I missing something or do we really need to manually add this to every person the source applies to?

How would I add a website as a source?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS Жыл бұрын
Hello Kyle! Thanks for stopping by and researching your family history on Ancestry. You can create a new source in your family tree as per instructions in the following article, see heading 'Manually adding sources': support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/Managing-Sources-in-Trees. When you fill in the details to create your new source you can list a website, in the same way as you can list any other source information. Another option is to attach a web link directly within a profile in your tree. You can do this by opening the profile and then clicking 'Add web link', at the bottom of the sources column. A web link is not a source that can be linked with particular facts or events, but it can be used as a quick way to display other websites on a profile page within your family tree. We hope these suggestions are helpful and wish you much success with your family research!
