Luffy telling vivi that people die and then crying when ace dies isn't a contradiction at all. Vivi wanted no one to die when a million people are ready to fight to the death. Luffy wanted to save one person. Those two instances are completely different scenarios. No contradiction.

@@newdawnhorizon9879 it would only be a contradiction if luffy didn't want anyone to die in marineford. But he didn't care if marines or white beard pirates died. He only cared about ace well being. Vivi on the other hand didn't want a single person to die, she didn't want any of royal army soldiers die, she didn't want any of the rebels to die and that's why luffy called her naive.

Reminds of the SBS questions when Oda pointed out to his fans he purposely never gave Luffy thought bubbles so that we the readers could get his personal thoughts on things. We judge him by his actions because Luffy will do what he says he'll do no matter what he stays true to his own moral compass.

I've read a lot of breakdowns and analyses of the Sabody Arc and even wrote ones myself, yet this explanation is by far the most nicely worded and it hits the nail on its head: "No one wanted to lose anything and everyone was willing to make the sacrifice to prevent the worst-case scenario. Their weakness revealed a lack of unity; mutual desires to protect leading to mutually assured destruction." I absolutely love everything about the Sabody Arc and I always find newer angles to appreciate. It was just such a groundbreaking event, not only in One Piece, but in Shounen manga in general. Hearing the narrator say 'On this day, the Straw Hat crew faced complete and utter defeat' never fails to give me chills.

@@waluigi3515 by that logic Crocodile never beat him cause Luffy is still alive. Smoker had him down on the ground under his blade, and if Dragon hadn't appeared that would've been the end of it. You might not consider that a win, but I certainly do.

@@Skywardstrike1998 Edit: grammar well, no, it's not the same, because a win in serious combat in one piece is usually a death or an incapacitation. Crocodile incapacitated Luffy twice, second time counting because if he didn't throw water in the air beforehand he would have died. If smoker actually managed to incapacitate Luffy he would have captured him, and that's that. So no Smoker never beat him, at least in my opinion.

@@daddyrizo1346 Didn't you see the video? Luffy was shown to mature when he actually trusted his crew enough to defend themselves from big mom and take on katakuri alone. Like the video pointed out, if this were the old luffy, the luffy that ran from the marines at Sabaody, he likely would have just ran and desperately defended his crew, sacrificing his body not relying on his crew at all.He trusted his crew to get out of that, and personally fought Katakuri in the hopes of getting stronger. He does grow and learn from his mistakes, and sometimes he does stupid shit because luffy is supposed to be a more silly character, even then he still learns and grows. Also, with kaido, he thought he completely lost his crew, which is why he charged him. It was an emotional reaction, I mean he had no reason to believe they were still alive as Kaido himself blasted their hideout. And, when he does get captured, he pushes himself and stays to see what he can get out of the prison. He trains his haki so he can have a different and better approach when his rematch with Kaido comes. Repeating myself here, he does learn.

@@daddyrizo1346 Well most people look at One Piece at surface level so its bound to encounter comments like these. There's the time when he learned when to bow to others. A simple act but says a lot about a person's attitude(Alabasta). Knowing what is needed to maintain the respect from his crew and authority as captain(Enies Lobby), being weak and not fully realizing the level of standard needed to pursue his dream(Sabaody and Marineford).
@rockinrom1524

This makes the Katakuri vs luffy fight have more significance. Katakuri is a reflection of luffy being better at him in almost every aspect at the start of the arc. He's able to copy and do everything luffy can at glance but better. Oda goal was for luffy to train this arc and show his growth from his previous failures. Katakuri kept knocking luffy down but he kept getting up not willing to give up. He could put all his attention on this fight because he trusts his crew. While Katakuri was a man said to never have been knocked down the perfect child in the big mom family. They both are pillars of there respective families but katakuri family doesnt even know him and more revere almost like a god. He also has the same problem as pre-time skip luffy as he is carrying the weight of his whole family on his back and they trust him as their best fighter minus big mom. While she is strong and the matriarch of the family katakuri holds much of the weight as well because he is a man that has never lost. Throughout the fight the learn to respect each other and grow from it. Luffy giving katakuri his first failure and katakuri allowing luffy to reach his level. This is even more emphazied when the katakuri and is able to get back up like luffy but he can't stay up, unlike luffy. But now katakuri doesnt have to worry about the burden of his family holding him up and can become stronger because of it.

Hey Crafty, from the bottom of my heart, I just want to thank you so much for the analysis videos on One Piece and the picking apart of Fairy Tail. Not only you and many others (Sawyer7mage, King of Lightning, Joy Boy, GrandLine and many others to boot) have taught me the do's and don'ts on Shonen and anime in general, but also to take in key concepts and rules on establishing an anime universe and its characters and whatnot. Right now, I'm doing my best to create a Shonen series that is inspired by Dragon Ball, One Piece, and a bit of My Hero Academia, and I'm viewing and reading books, videos, and threads on Reddit on how to write coherent stories to make the audience engaged. I don't want the series to be like a poor imitation to the series I listed above but like take their elements and put a little spin on it. Once again, I thank you for the videos and I hope you'll do many more to come. Not only that, I also viewed videos from Lessons from the Screenplay to handle mature themes and storytelling other than solely relying on Shonen and other anime genres. Do you have any recommendations on books or more videos so I can be able to take a good grasp on telling a great story without resorting to a poor imitation or abysmal Fairy Tail quality? I know how to draw characters and locations, just need to grasp better on narrative.

One thing which makes One Piece so great in my opinion is how Oda was clear from the start what the end-goal of the story was. If you want to write a cohesive story, you have to have the ending in mind from the beginning. Otherwise you're bound to write yourself into a corner one day.

I love the symbolic imagery in One Piece. Oda does great work at making One Piece a series that appeals to kids and young teens, while having enough underlying conflict, symbolism, character development and cool scenes to appeal to audiences as they get older. He keeps much of his writing simple and focused (which sometimes elicits Meat-booze-woman criticism), but the whole picture is far more complex and gets across key ideas very well

I dunno if this was super obvious or not, but this video made me look at the title in a different way, ONE PIECE might not be the treasure, but just a literal piece of the puzzle or the larger overall collection of pieces that make up the world that is represented by the straw-hats in relation to the many groups of characters that make up this world as whole.
@etchyasketch2851

In Japanese "One Piece" in reference to the treasure is always written as "ひとつなぎの大秘宝 (ワンピース)" or "The One Treasure That Brings All Things Together". It really isnt a stretch at all to think of it that way. Robins dream is to lead all information from the past to the present by finding all the Poneglyphs and guiding them to Laughtale the final island. To connect past to present. Sanjis dream is to find the "All Blue" a miracle sea that has the sealife of all 4 seas. To connect all seas. I think its a deliberate choice by Oda, just more pieces of the Puzzle he is slowly filling in for us Readers, whether we are consciously thinking about them or not.

To get the same clues Roger was given on his quest for Pirate King. 2. To ring the bell for Mont Cricket. 3. Unpopular opinion: Luffy at Archipelago ordered his crew to runaway because he didn't want them to die. He knew that he couldn't protect them alone in that situation against the Pacifistas, Sentomaru, Kuma and Kizaru. Had it being a different situation, he will sacrifice himself while they leave like in the Katakuri fight. So I wouldn't consider the Archipelago moment him "giving up" but more a "realization of his weakness, not having the strength to protect his friends in all situations."

Staying and fighting would've just killed them straight up, after putting up a fight with a pacifista they were at their last legs to begin with On top of being outmatched completely

Awesome job; I really enjoyed the video. I had never thought of it before because him being a man of action is so plain and unobscurred that I did not think I needed to. You actually bring up a great point. Luffy did learn the wrong lesson and he's going to be taught it in the near future (for him at least). I keep wondering why we the audience should discredit Oda saying through other characters that Kaido is Invincible and cannot be harmed? We keep thinking that Luffy needs to beat Kaido, that based off the story and narrative that Luffy will eventually succeed... but really he doesn't. It would be painful to see everyone fail at the rebellion, to see Luffy and his crew destroyed again. But, theres something you brought up that people never consider... Why is up to Luffy's main crew. Why is victory based off a single fight among leaders. The worst defeat someone could hand Kaido... its not physical in the least. It's mental, its emotional, it's SPIRITUAL. So how do you deliver that type of defeat? The answer is staring us in the face; all you have to do is ask "Why Wano", some answers come to kind like resources and secrecy... NO, ITS SECURITY; why would someone that cannot die do something for the sake of security? His crew. His crew is where the rebellion or the other factions can hurt him best. Kaido is Luffy if Luffy never lost in the first place (as in the loss that scattered his crew). Kaido has done most of it himself and like Dofy has great concern for a select few. That is why i think he hides on Wano. I think if the Mugiwara do beat him that it will be Zoro using Ryumas sword to take down Kaido there are Zero exceptions to this in my mind. but most likely it wont be the crew at all. Not just Luffy but his crew need to learn to trust in those that follow them (grand fleet/rebels/people of Wano, wanting a non-kozuki leader/Minks/other).

While a lot consider Crocodile to be the first to defeat Adult Luffy (cause Croco-boy put him on the brink of death twice or even thrice ) the first person who really defeat him was Smoker, even if he didn't hurt him, he neutralized him and made him completely defensless in a one-sided fight, without Dragon, that would have been the end

If you’re going by that logic Luffy would have died to Buggy without Dragon saving him in Louge Town because Buggy was about to publicly execute Luffy in the same location that Gol D. Roger was executed in.

@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr True, though in that case Arlong too But neither Arlong and Baggy truly defeated him, one caught him off-guard while vs Arlong it was Luffy's own stupidity at play Smoker and Crocodile fought a serious Luffy head on, Luffy didn't do any mistake and was focused but he was still overwhelmed by both of them

To people saying Roger sacrificed himself for his crew mates I honestly don't think that was what Rogers thoughts were Roger Pirates were hella strong and they pretty much were self sufficient but the choice of Roger Disband was due to his health condition He achieved what he wanted to and then there was no purpose since the Roger pirates were built on the idea of turning the world upside down and they did when he became the pirate king so continuing the journey with no purpose sounds like a lost cause Maybe this could appear true to the case of his family By turning himself in there mightve been a possibility that he wanted them to have a normal life and don't want to be associated with Roger to be chased down all their life by World Govt but in turn the sacrifice he made lead to his death and the inability to protect both Portgas D Rouge and Portgas D Ace What's more interesting is this applies to Garp too Garp sacrificed himself for both marine not leveraging him to get Ace and let Luffy punch him to save Ace but by then sacrificing his connection and his strength he wasn't able to prevent this war from happening not able to be there to help ace from akainu My ONE PIECE is just brilliant
