Whats shaking KZfaq today I am making a little video with my CRAFTSMAN 2 1/4 Ton Jack and Jack stand Combo from sears. This hydraulic jack and jack stand are both very poorly constructed and extremely dangerous. In this video I show and demonstrate why not to buy this. I have never had a problem with any craftsman products before now and I do not intend to bring down the company, just this particular item. Thanks for watching subscribe for more videos.

If the jackstand hook engaging mechanism was engaged with the teeth of the jack stand...there is no way in hell that those soft cotter pins would bear the force required to disengage the downward locking force...you messed up somewhere

Also the fact that he is complaining about the jack not lifting well and being unsafe while admitting it is low on oil. Duh, put a little in it and problem solved.

The shear pin that broke is a safety feature designed to prevent the jack stand from crashing down. They are supposed to break free in the event that the release arm is moved. The ratchet design is one where as long as there is downward force the ratchet will not disengage. To make it fail, the arm would have to move upward against the force of the vehicle causing the ratchet to move upwards just enough to disengage. It may be possible to bump the release arm up if the car does not weight very much, but that is still not very likely. My guess is that you did something to make the ratchet disengage.

@@FesterJones360 The whole video is misinformation. He's changed or purgerd the jack 100 times? The damn thing looks beat to shit. I have a Craftsman 2 1/4 ton jack and it looks a little different. It has the name CRAFTSMAN in big letters on one of the visible decals, and to be honest, I've never had any of those problems.

How did you "slowly" lower the car with that jack? I have a cheap jack similar to that with the stands and it has the same release as your jack. As soon as you loosen it the car drops.

Just bought the same combo set from Autozone. Using it in my 2020 Kia Soul as back up to the scissor jack that came with the car. Not to use for any serious car repair, just for on the road emergency use. We'll see if it handles that purpose or not.

I have the same set, the jack itself bent under the weight of my car and I wasn't on a hill or anything. I bought a new jack, a 4 ton, and was using the jack stands. One of the welds broke and it collapsed. I have an 05 Grand Prix so it wasn't stressed that much. Needless to say I'm looking for heavy duty non Chinese made jack stands now. I was lucky I wasn't under it.

How did you break the pin? The pin does not support any weight, it only locks the handle to the pawl/stopper that locks onto the ratchet bar. From seeing how you treat a jack as you say low fluid, nothing surprises me. Bleeding air and adding fluid in a jack does wonders, just a thought.

Dylan, Thank you! Do you use something to secure strands? No worranties are expected. Just your personal private opinion. Nails, drill bits? I shouldn't secure stands with constantly lowering hydraulic jack. Thank you. I was looking for your viseo to learn how to use your stuff. I know for now what to be expecting. Thank you.

Get a real full size floor jack, 3 1/4 ton and 6 ton stands. Jack lowering means bad seal. Fluid blowing by the seal leaking back into the resivours causing jack to lower. Return for new. If can upgrade do it. If not take the replacements and sell them and buy yourself quality tools.

Just can’t see how the shore pin breaking could be a safety issue. Only prevents you from releasing the jack/dropping the weight. Just a fixed jack stand at that point until you take the cars weight off right?

Ok, that's it. I just bought a Craftsman combo yesterday, came with the floor jack, stands and creeper. I didn't ever intend to use the stands, because I think they are 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 tons. I have a pair of 4 ton Craftsman stands which I bought separately which I was thinking of using. Now I'm having second thoughts. The jack combo is most probably going back. But now i'm thinking of returning the stands too. Can we double the stands for safety, meaning use 2 on one side instead of one. Or can we put the stands on top of cinder blocks, so they are already at their lowest position. This kind of stuff scares me. OSHA should look into these products before letting them put out on the market.

Adnan Faridi i would use 2 stands on each side also I think the 4 ton hold up to 8000 pounds maybe this guy was using a bigger suv let’s say a escalade a escalade weight is 6300 pounds that little jack and stands would of cut it so maybe he was using a proper jack for the car he was working on

Eric Money I've only had to use it twice on my lowered MK5 GTI, works as well as any other Jack.. The good is that it's very light and compact so it's actually easier to move it around by just picking it up and setting it where you want rather than rolling it around.. it's a low pro Jack so don't expect to go crazy high but it goes high enough for me to slide under the car and work... also the lever to jack it up is kinda of short, wished it was longer but not a big deal, like I said it's small/compact.. about to use it on my stock height M3 this weekend.. I'll update this to say how it goes

Back in the day, Craftsman tools were just as good as Snap on, lifetime replacement warranty and everything. They even used the Craftsman tool catalog list as a guide at the flight mechanic school I attended. Over time and with the decline of Sears and Ace Hardware selling the brand I don't think the end product is the same. I definately would be cautious with jacks and larger shop tools.

I have those Jack stands except I bought them in the early 2000s. Roughly 2003 and they're made in America. So far they've held up extremely well. Just last month I replaced all the bushings and ball joints/ tie rods on the front end of my 2002 ep3 and it took me over a week (I work slow Haha). I had one side of the front of the car on one of those craftsman Jack stands the entire time. I mean they look small AF and seem weak but for the last 20 yrs, they've served me well. Funny thing t00 I bought them on sale for 17.99$ with a gift certificate I got for xmas in 2001 I think

I have that set, lfound out to leave the handle on down position and it won't go down, beside that l put the Jack stand as a support and l leave the jack, so if that jack fail or you said will slowly go down the jack stand will catch the weight of the car.The purpose of the jack is to lift the car not to leave it on the car, that's why you have a jack stand as a set.

I have had 2 ACDelco jacks, and 4 stands. The jacks are junk, I'll never use another one. The stands are pretty good though. And you can use brake fluid to refill the Jack. Also, if you let the Jack down and don't tighten the screw back, pump it about ten times that way and it will Jack up much better. I have a Jack that does that and that always makes it better.

I've never used ratcheting style jack stands because I never felt comfortable with them and you've just confirmed my fears about the ratcheting mechanism braking, I've always preferred the ones that used a pin instead. Even better is to build your own out of wood like in this video or something similar that makes you feel more secure. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNZid9SfsZmlYZs.html&list=WL

As others stated that pin is a safety feature to prevent the jack from falling. If it broke there is no way that stand would drop. Something else caused this issue.

Yeah, completely agree! I bought this set and I tried to break it just so I could complain on KZfaq! Problem is.....the only part I could actually break was a shear pin that didn’t even compromise my safety. That’s when I decided to lie about the car falling and complain about an insignificant amount of surface rust that’s only visible if you flip the jack upside down look really closely in every crevice! I mean, what a piece of junk!
