I'm a hobby woodworker, and I have to agree that refurbing trusty old wooden "things" is very satisfying. Great to give old stuff another go-round at doing what it does. Happy Independence Day Blackie !

Hi Blackie, great job on fixing the old stool. I used to have one of those stools that I got from my grandfather. I don't think I have it anymore. Unless it's buried in the garage. Brings back memories. He's the one that introduced me to camping long ago and I've been hooked ever since. 👍🏻Have a great 4th!

This is what we need more of! We have become such a throw-away society that if you get one season out of a piece of gear, you're lucky! My Pop taught me to repair not replace if possible! Pop would say that stool will make another crop now! Lol Great Job Blackie!

Don't forget when you are done to refinish the wood. I either revarnish using spar varnish or scrape all the old finish off and apply a 50/50 mix of pine tar and boiled linseed oil. One thing though it will small of pine for quite some time. Pine tar is available from local farm stores or online for the treatment of horses hooves.

Thank you, Blackie. I have a very similar chair made with metal tubing instead of wood, but can no longer use it because of no back support for my aging body.

Another way to fix this would be to replace that metal pin with a draw-bored thru peg. You take the stool apart and drill thru the side of the top rail first, then place the leg back in place. You mark with a pencil the center of the hole onto the leg, then remove the leg again. You place your drill bit 1/32 to 1/16 down from your mark - that way when you hammer in the peg it draws the leg tighter up into the hole In the top rail. Slightly more work, but it needs no glue or metal fasteners, and if you need to take it apart at a later date for further repairs you can. Simply drill out your peg and then tap them apart with a hammer. If you have questions or want a better explanation of what a draw-bored thru peg is, I'd suggest looking up Paul Seller, Rex Kruger or Mr. Chickadee here on KZfaq. They have videos that explain the concept quite well.

Sadly garage sales, estate auctions and set out by the curb is only place to find these available anymore it seems. Unless you are helping an old guy clean out his garage and he gives them to you after commenting on them.
