watched your first video and started a magazine journal at the end of October 2016. I am still working in the same magazine. the spine has rolled a little, but I don't care. (used strong packing tape at the start up)..I like this way of keeping a journal. THANK YOU, I really appreciate your method of doing something without it costing a large amount of money or time to search out the perfect journal to use.

ila boyd Hi ila! SO happy to hear you're having fun in your journal. My 2016 journal rolled slightly, but given the volume of tip-ins etc., I had in the journal, no wonder right?! I still love everything about it though and wouldn't trade it for anything....sounds like you feel the same way - YAY! TFW and commenting. Joanne

Alternating from front, then the back, then the middle and so on really helps the spine from rolling. Dede Willingham taught me that 😊

Hello Miss Joanne. I'm Marlene from New Mexico. Thank you for making me a happy person. I have been binge-watching your videos. I love them. You present your info in a happy way that made feel like I can make a magazine journal. For about the last 2 years I have been on a mission to use up my stuff. My first few pages are kind of ripply but I am using a credit-card type tool and making an extra effort to make them smoother. Not sure if I'll use it as a glue book, a collage book or a combination of everything. Thank you! Thank you!Thank you!

Marlene Brockmann Hi Marlene! What a wonderful comment to wake up to this a.m.! Thank you so much for your kind words. So happy to hear you have made a magazine journal - awesome! Don't worry if your pages have a few ripples, you won't even notice it when you start covering up your pages. A couple suggestions that might help you....use a soft cloth (like an old t-shirt) to burnish and smooth your pages. Also put your journal under a stack of books to weigh it down. This will also help flatten it a bit. I have been using my magazine journal now for 2 years and I still love it! It sounds like you have several brilliant ideas for the use of your journal, all of which will be fun! TFW and leaving the awesome comment. ❤️ Joanne

What a great journal idea! I've been working on the contents all summer for a garden journal, but can't decide on the actual journal type to use... I wanted something mixed between a bullet journal type to put the "data" from my seeds, bloom dates, etc but also have used a mini cam to take pics all summer of plants as they progressed. Then of course, the seed packets, various notecards of recipes for pest prevention, essential oil uses that were successful, tips for certain type of plants I find on Pinterest.... you get the idea ;) so I have all this since starting in February, but was afraid it wouldn't get put together because of my "fear of starting" . This is great! I'd love to have your file with the dates. I will send an email asking; thanks again for this!!!!

I can’t even explain my fascination with these. I’m (veeeeeery) slowly working on my magazine TN journal and I think I spend more time just admiring it then actually adding to it. LOL! I know what you mean about them being expensive! You can also check with your local library as they frequently give them away or charge a very minimal amount for old magazines. Brilliant love that thank you for inspiring me and many others no doubt. I feel like i can have a go now i did buy a nice new sparkly journal to write in but subconsciously i feel like i may completely ruin it if i stick this in with this idea it takes the worry away that i wont spoil it not that i would, but, also i like the look of doing this so many colours and pictures already there. Hi Curly6606! Thank you SO much for your awesome comment! You made my morning. I understand what you mean about having a beautiful journal and being afraid to use it....no worries with the magazine. I do hope you give this a try because it's super easy and really fun! If you want a small format, perhaps a Traveler's Notebook (in magazine format) would work better. Either way, I do hope you take the time to journal and get those memories down on paper! TFW and taking the time to comment....xxx ooo Joanne

Hi that was a quick reply thank you. What another great idea about the travelers notebook. Now to get past the" what to write" syndrome
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
What to write - I know that can be hard...I struggled with it too until I realized this was MY journal and I can put in it whatever I want. SO I generally just document things I want to remember about the week. Weather, national events, funny stories, a memory that pops up, conversations with friends/spouse, photos, dog stories (always!), poems, "to do" lists, accomplishments, books I'm reading and the list goes on and on! Does that help? I have a week in the life series I did quite a while ago - perhaps that will spark something for you. Here's a link to the first video in the series....just have fun! That's the most important thing. Joanne kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apNgqsuD2ri5oas.html

@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Marci JLo Vallun Hi Marci, I don't think you're doing anything wrong....you are not going to have perfectly aligned pages because the center pages will start to push out...totally natural process because of the volume. If it's bugging you, the next time you might want to take some pages out, so you give the spine some room to grow. I'm hoping it doesn't bother you too much. If you look at mine, it's doing the same thing. Does that help? Joanne

Hello! New subbie here! I am attempting to make one as I binge watch your videos :) Do you have any tips about gluing the background paper on without it bubbling and warping the pages?
@craftyhodges

Kelly Macisso hi Kelly! Welcome to my channel and thank you for subscribing! So happy you are making a magazine journal. Let's get to your question. Are you using a glue stick? Do not use a wet glue. It will warp your page. If you are using a glue stick, be sure to apply a generous amount, especially around the perimeter. Hold your paper taunt and start putting it down by lining it up on the outside edge of your magazine. Gently start to roll it down toward the center. Then burnish it down well with a soft cloth, paying particular attention to the edges. It will eventually dry and you shouldn't see any bubbling. I also regularly weigh my journal down under heavy books. A good thing to do while your pages are drying. It does take a little practice to apply the paper, but within 2-3 sheets, you will get the hang of it. Hope that helps...if not, ask more questions...that's why I am here. Joanne

craftyhodges Thank you for your quick reply! You're so sweet :) I will have to practice more with the gluing- it's sitting under some books now!

Kelly Macisso Oh good, that will help flatten it out. Also be sure you burnish it, that helps spread the glue and gets rid of any bumps. Let me know how it goes. Joanne

So how does your journal look this morning Kelly? Better? Joanne
@Kelcisso
@Kelcisso 7 жыл бұрын
craftyhodges Yes! It seems the flattening helped a lot and the wrinkles don't bother me. Trying out some scrapbook papers first, but may want to use some plainer paper too. Not quite ready to attempt the cover yet! 😳 but so far so good! 👌🏼

When you started the filming you showed finished books and their spines were very WIDE. How did they get that way?

Just Me Hi there! The magazine grows as you start to fill it....so you might have heard me say I started with the Sunset magazine I showed and the finished journal is how it grew! That’s why reinforcing is critical. Hope that helps. Joanne

Could I use strips of fabric? I love the look of them.

Hi Vici! Welcome to my channel - I'm so glad you're here. Can you elaborate a bit - not sure what you mean about using strips of fabric.....I'm sure you probably can, but not sure where you want to substitute them... Let me know and I'll see if I can help you.....TFW! Joanne

I often use strips of muslin, or other cotton fabric, strips about the width if the regular washi tape that I have ripped off the edge of the fabric. It is much cheaper than washi and give the inside edges of the pages a unique look. Is this enough of a reinforcement?
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 6 жыл бұрын
Vici Holbrook Hey Vinci! Yes, I think that would work just fine..it would be stronger that the washi for sure. I would be concerned about the bulk, so maybe use it every other page? BTW...although I used a Magnolia journal here, do not use one...they fall apart and be sure our magazine is glued, not stapled. If you have any other questions, please just ask. TFW. Merry Christmas! Xxoo Joanne

Thank you for answering me. I will allow for the different weights of the fabrics and the washi tapes.

I love how you made this, I must try to re-create, I was looking on the web for the Tyvek Tape and here in the UK it costs £32.12 (incl v.a.t) wow that is way too expensive for me, It's great that you guys can pick this up quite cheaply. Is Elmers Glue same as pva glue, don't seem to get that brand here only regular pva glue, would that work the same? May I please have a copy of your diary page, I have sent you an email ~~~ TFS, this is awesome :)) ~~~ Susan

@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, YIKES - that is definitely too expensive! You must have access to clear packing tape or duct tape right? Those will work just fine. You just need a stronger type to help ensure everything is nice and secure. Regarding the glue, Elmers is not the same as PVA glue...PVA is really for bookbinding and is acid free. For this purpose, it should not matter at all, Elmer's will work just fine. Have fun creating your journal - I think you'll love it once you start working in it. I'll send you the grid file immediately. Watch you mail! Joanne

Thank you for reply Joanne, ahh so Elmer's is not like pva glue, I wondered as I was just about to buy some pva glue, quite difficult to find Elmer's glue here but I will take a look on line, I will check my email and thanks again :)) Susan

Hi Susan...now that I'm re-reading your question...are you really talking about the glue stick?

Glue stick and also the glue you squeeze out of bottle? :)
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Use a good quality glue stick...UHU is also a good brand if you can find that and be sure to apply a good coating of glue stick and burnish well so your images and journal will stick well together. Other liquid glues you can use are Aileen's (if you can find that). PVA glue is basically archival, that's its main quality, but use whatever you can find that's relatively inexpensive. Joanne

That tape is Tyvek brand, but it isn't Tyvek material. I'd say, gluing Tyvek strips on makes sense, but paying for what is essentially overpriced packing tape doesn't

can you please help me haha im so bad with math how many pages for a 6 month and a yearly one with the yearly spread in front? thank you!!!
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Lynn......sure, happy to help. I am assuming you are going to do a spread a week. Here we go: 6 month Option = 26 weeks *2(two page spread) = 52 pages + whatever you want in the front/back 12 month Option - 52 weeks *2 (two page spread) = 104 + whatever you want in front/back. Hope this helps...let me know if you need further help or explanation. Joanne
