Craig Ashley David MBE, born on May 5, 1981, is a celebrated British singer and songwriter who first gained prominence in 1999 by featuring on "Re-Rewind," a hit single by Artful Dodger. He catapulted to fame with the release of his debut studio album, "Born to Do It," in 2000. Following this successful start, David continued his musical journey, releasing five more studio albums and collaborating with renowned artists including Sting, Tinchy Stryder, Big Narstie, Kano, and Jay Sean.
Throughout his career, David has achieved significant milestones, including twenty UK top 40 singles and seven UK top 40 albums, solidifying his status as a successful solo artist with over 15 million records sold worldwide. His outstanding work in the music industry has earned him fourteen Brit Award nominations, with five of those for Best British Male. Additionally, he has been nominated twice for the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
David's early life began in Southampton, Hampshire, where he was born as the only child to Tina, a retail assistant, and George David, a carpenter. Growing up in the Holyrood estate, David was raised in a culturally diverse family; his father is Afro-Grenadian, and his mother is Anglo-Jewish, with family ties to the founders of the Accurist watch-making company. His maternal grandparents included an Orthodox Jew and a convert to Judaism. His parents separated when he was eight, and he was primarily raised by his mother.
David attended Bellemoor School and Southampton City College, where he faced bullying from other students. This experience inspired him to write and release the song "Johnny" in 2005, reflecting his memories of being bullied. His interest in music was influenced by his father, George David, who played bass in a reggae band called Ebony Rockers. As a teenager, David often joined his father at local dance clubs, where he had the opportunity to take the microphone and showcase his talent, setting the stage for his future musical endeavors.
