Review & test of Philips X-tremeVision +130% headlight bulbs, including un-boxing, overview of features, and comparison with standard bulbs. These bulbs are the most expensive and shortest lasting of the Philips range, so what do you get in return?
Amazon US: amzn.to/2a5Zr6M | UK: amzn.to/2cdefj1
XtremeVision claimed properties:
* 3700 K light color
* +130% light beam
* 450 hour lifetime
These "+" halogen bulbs are not more powerful than regular bulbs, nor do they necessarily output more total lumens (light), as both these factors are restricted by regulations. Rather, they use various tricks to improve the quality of the beam and give a perceived improvement.
Measured light color was ~3200 K, so warmer (more yellow) than claimed. However the beam is excellent, clearly brighter. Actual comparison with standard/economy bulbs is at the end of the video.
(Using the above Amazon links helps to support my channel and is appreciated!)

I have them on my car, I perceive them as 20% brighter than the standard ones I used before(not Philips, don't remember the company). However unlike what advertised on the box, they don't send the beam further at all, that is only decided by the shape and orientation of the reflector. It's hard to tell exactly, but it seems to have the beam better contoured, so I can set the lights more upwards and not bother the drivers coming from opposite lanes.

Hello thank you for making this video. You have done the best job in reviewing, explaining how they work and clearly showing a before and after, all the other light bulb videos suck. I actually think you have something special going on for you and if you just refine your style further you can take advantage of your good equipment/software and really make your channel into a real thing. This video shows your potential. I'll subscribe and hope good work comes out from your channel. Cheers.

Hi Just a quick question. I have 35w 5000k Xenon for my dipped lights on an e91 2012. Is there another bulb I could use for the main that’s NOT a Xenon but same 5000k. Any recommendations? Thanks
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Nothing that is sensible. You can get blue tinted bulbs that will look whiter, but they only work but cutting out the yellow light, so making them less bright, which is not smart for main beams.

How do they last as opposed to other bulbs? My Subaru Forester burns out headlights every year. The 2010 is noted for that. I need a better bulb ,brighter bulb that lasts longer than just a year. The problem white whiter bulbs where I live is snow, with white bulbs,snow reflects back into your eyes something terrible.Any suggestions?%
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested longevity. They are still running in my car so I have no complaints. Philips' rated lifetime seems plausible as they scale them reasonably against their others. The brighter bulbs are always going to have shorter lifetimes, that's just the cost of pushing the filaments. So maximum lifespan will be the "economy" or "long life" bulbs. In your case, if your car is killing bulbs, you have a problem with voltage regulation or heat build up. And if you want to avoid white/blue, obviously don't buy blue tinted bulbs (although again in the case of sensible designs the blue tint is not actually in the projected beam path, it's just for spilled light). If you want to go further, you could look into selective yellow tints (either bulbs or light lens - check legality in your area) to cut glare. Although, while this was popular in France for example, actual evidence that it really helps seems sketchy.

Nice review. I also think they give a better light than the old ones. Is it 130% ? - hard to say, but to be so clearly better it's definitely more than 50% I would say. On my car they only last 6 months - but so did the old ones. My car is from a time where the law required lights on all day - doesn't exactly help.

Where I read about them, the 130% is an increase by that compared to lowest legal brightness.

set white cardboard in front of light same distance, and with your camera exposure you can measure how bright is that new bulb is. set your camera in aperture priority mode and that's it.

Great review Craig, but can I just ask ................... did you check what voltage you were getting at your bulbs ? as I think those Philips can be better still. You may be suffering from voltage drop on your loom. Also, any idea what the chrome section at the tip of the bulb does ? TURK
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 6 жыл бұрын
You can only judge in comparison, and they are an obvious improvement on the old bulbs. You are looking through a camera. The chrome section - looks good from the outside I guess.

Thanks for quick reply mate. I understand it was a comparison test from the OEM bulbs, so that's fine. I noticed that a lot of people are complaining about the longevity of these bulbs, what they don't seem to understand is, any power bulb will burn hotter thus reducing their life, so there's a compromise .............. it's not that the bulb is of poor quality, it just burns itself out much quicker. Going via your diagram of bulb and reflector, I was thinking maybe the chrome on the tip of the bulb acts as a small reflector of sorts, thus reducing light scatter as you mentioned. Anyway mate ................. great video ! TURK

My 2010 Subaru goes through headlights like crazy, even expencive bulbs. I have checked everything related to the power output as well as any issues reported by others and indeed Subaru vehicles do have issues with shortened headlight life, no explination as to why.
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Heat/vibration - or if electrical, watch your voltage just using a scan tool to see if there are unusual peaks, maybe the alternator is not the best.
@scottfirman
@scottfirman 6 жыл бұрын
Craig's DIY Car I am going with design flaw. Why would every Subaru out there in the 2010 model year as well as subsequent years prior to the new design changes have headlights going out prematurely? Design flaw. No, not alternator, checked that. My guess is heat issues. The headlight is retained in a box with a screw on cap with a seal, no airflow at all to the bulb. That a brilliantly stupid idea! I am considering removing the sealed cap and allow air to reach the headlamp. It may allow dust and dirt to build up inside the lamp housing. I was thinking of cutting a circle out of the cap and gluing filter material to the hole,at least then the lamp can get air and the filter would prevent dirt from entering the housing.

I understand that the blue filters are strategically placed to change the apparent color temperature of the bulb. The blue filters look dull to me, and I will guess that in time they will burn away, and we will be left with a 3000K halogen bulb anyway. I will of course know in 3 years! Cheers,
